My understanding (please correct me if I am wrong) is that wheelies do not break any rules
might not break any rules but Some clubs at some meetings have a policy of no wheelies, it's their meeting and their head on the chopping block therefore it's their perogative.

Yep, I totally agree. My understanding, tho, is that the 'no wheelies' policy is unenforceable, as it is not against MNZ rules. I am still happy to be corrected/proved wrong.

Ever been a witness in a Coroners Court, I have after a racing fatality, they show no mercy and they have the power to finish that coffin off with just one nail, they don't need lots of small ones.
Yep. I have been an "expert witness" on several occasions, as I was employed by the Tauranga Police as a motorcycle examiner for bikes involved in fatal crashes locally.
I was also an interested observer in the Leon Mason bike fatality case, so yeah, had a bit to do with it.
Now that it has been widley reported in popular media that a competitor was roasted for putting on a show, you can be sure of two things. No competitor will ever risk that again, & the paying public already know that. (not criticising the bike mag, they reported the truth, & rightfully so)
Consequently, it will show in the gate take figures for Paeroa 2014.
Running out of petrol has killed more competitors than one handed wheelies in the last ten years.
I understand comments were made, due to a picture that emerged of me swinging on a sidecar recently, clearly not hanging on with either hand at all. These kind of things are performed to make the crowd sit a little closer to the edge of their seat, give them some value for their gate fee & to hopefully help them to decide to come again next year.
If the showmanship is outlawed, racing will be as fun to watch as slot cars & consequently, will draw as big a crowds as slot cars do.

You've been negative towards the Nationals for some time, seems a mindset more than anything else to me.
There were 12 bikes on the grid for the first race at Ruapuna, check mylaps it'll tell you and that is a signifcant drop from last season where there were 19.
The economys taken a hit and with the rego rise a couple of years back we're lucky there's even a dozen. don't forget the other classes which are reasonably well subscribed and the racing in pretty well all the classes is anything but processional The crowds were as big as I've seen at Ruapuna, that's life it's not 1978 and the malboro series any more.
No Atmosphere, were you there? I was and there was a good vibe around the place, not the same as a street circuit but pretty damn good.
You've watched all levels of bike racing for long enough to know that one day there'll be a shit fight out there, the next it'll be a procession...
What, I'm not allowed !!!!
I've said before that I have no interest in Championships here. You are in favour and that's cool . Pump away in the rose tinted glasses! you don't have to go far to see I'm not alone.
Yes I've been following racing a long time and I can tell, as many others can, that Nationals has always been for a select few who want to race for a title that to them means they were the winner in that race in that year. I just never saw any value in it sorry. More often than not Nth riders wouldn't bother to go Sth and vise versa. You are the winner of those that turned up only.
Sundays NZGP played on TV3 was average at best and if twelve bikes were there, 6 or 7 were in the race, well two really.
Sorry it's been going downhill since probably the 90s, Fact ! Shit I loved Wanganui, started there in 1970, thru Marlboro to early 80s. Went back on my return to NZ in 1999 and saw the drop off. Now 12 yrs on its worse again. I accept it, it's dying.
Another point, our best, Andrew Stroud,he's what 41/42 ? would never happen years ago. Who can even beat him now (the Aussie No 5) ? It's spiralling down, talent, Depth and interest.
I spend good money to travel to GPs and I get what I pay for, the best ! While I'm there in May/June i'll get me some of those glasses but hey I doubt they'll work for me.

Another point, our best, Andrew Stroud,he's what 41/42 ? would never happen years ago.ever heard of guy called Joey Dunlop, won his last TT at 47 years old Who can even beat him now (the Aussie No 5) ? It's spiralling down, talent, Depth and interest.

You may think I've got a glass full attitude but I too see that it's not the days of old but it's still what we have in front of us and I'm going to enjoy as much as I can while it's still here. Last season there were two races where 2/1000ths of second separted first and second and a number of real close races, there's still action out there just like the old days on the track
there's no magic bullet to re invent it all, short of millions of bucks in prizemoney and advertising.
Sport as a rule are now businesses the Americas cup showed us that after all who the fuck of the population even knew the first thing about yachting till it was forced onto us by the media like the V8's, i can't see what the fuss is all about, certainly looks like expensive form of stockcar racing to me not the skill of open wheelers for sure but it's what's promoted by the people with the bucks, it's not the 'moto gp' of the cars either, why is that? why aren't the formula one or whatever the fastest out there getting the blue riband treatment here????
Drifting too, too me there's a skill but if you've seen one you've seen em all and the crowd goes nuts over a skid into the dirt or barrier, that just tells me the crowd has little perception of what skills are involved in actually racing a motor vehicle they're just there cause it's trendy to do so.
Do your self a favour one day and go to a nationals and sit back and enjoy what's there for the sake of it, you may not get a t shirt and cap and poster and laminated ticket but you'll get some Kiwis doing the best that they can fucking do in our country and enjoying it while they can.

Anyway, Apart from titties, beer & Dukic & Taylor mud wrestling, what do we need to do to get spectators to race meetings?
We need to get & let people ride like they are able to & want to again, rather than supress their showmanship & skills with tough penalties.
There is a T shirt with the phrase "who put the H in Whanganui?" printed on it. The H in the phrase is Robert Holdens number board on some old GS1000 or the like, with the bike standing up at 45 degrees on the Cemetary Circiut.
We have gone from that, to banning wheelies & supressing what makes bike racing fun to watch & so the show deteriorates.
I remember Glenn Williams (1st one) & Rob Holden wheelieing the full lenght of the Pukie front straight, trying to out do each other in 87, that made racing great. I dont remember who won, but nobody got in the shit for it & nobody died, well not from that anyway.
It made me want to be around bike racing thats for sure!!
Bring back the showmen & the spectators will follow.
Maybe we need a $200 bonus for each of, best wheelie, best stoppie, best motard type slide on the most inapropriate bike (cheques in the mail for that one Jay) Etc etc.
I should be clear that this is not a dig at any or every steward. They are operating under instruction, but clearly those instructions have changed over the years, as some of the stewards are still the same ones & frankly, are without exception, good bastards.

Have you got statistics to back that up ? You could actually try it - advertise a free race meeting and see how many turn up, then the next meeting charge full price....and then compare the numbers. I bet I know what meeting will get the biggest attendance.
At our dirt track on Waiheke Island there was no charge for spectators, but an entry fee for competitors. No shortage of spectators...and so no shortage of up and coming racers.
Oh, that would never work, we'll just ignore that suggestion.

But yeah, on a closed sealed race circuit away from spectators, why can't you wheelie like years gone by? People used to spank their monkeys watching that shit.... I know I did..... made me go out and do it on the streets too.......:eek5:
As for F1 cars (or even V8 Supers) - I wouldn't go to watch it if I had a free ticket. Rather stay at home and surf porn...... You are wasting your time debating this on a motorcycle forum that seems about 50% of the active members are racers. They will go anyway.
You need to go find the people that DON'T go to motorcycle racing and ask them. There are event organisers and marketing companies that do exactly this sort of thing...

No, I dont think im funny at all, I was refering to the Primary School education grammer, or lack of it in your former post, which clearly suggested youre either uneducated, or 7 years old. Obviously your mum helped you with this post though.
I couldnt give a fuck who does & dosent like watching sidecars frankly, thats not my problem, but suffice to say, we have the most entries for Taupo national event at this stage, so there will be some bitterly dissapointed spectators there I guess.
And where in this thread have I been supporting & ranting about sidecars?
I am a huge supporter of solo racing & own a front running two wheeled bike, ridden by a top rider for the benifit of racing, not for my own good.

We put flyers on just about every bike parked in Wellington - Had it announced at Pearoa BOTS - (there were going to be flyers put on all the spectator bikes there as well but the plonker who was supposed to do that crashed in practice) Loads of people thought it was a good idea (including me) But as I said it didn't make much difference (I actually counted the cars in the carpark for that meeting and the previous one ) and there was nothing much in it - we are talking hundreds - not thousands of cars :(
We had a shit load of programs left over as well :(
I dunno ??

Should've put flyers on all the cars too.................thats the audience that needs to know when meetings are on.
I said I'd help a mate at the Taupo rnd and had to go to the MNZ site just to see what the dates were....................and I'm into bikes, its been said many times, Joe Public just doesn't know racing exists. I watch waay too much TV and have yet to see any ad's for the Nats.
Last Nats I went to at Manfeild I took a mate and to be honest we got bored, ok we were really only interested in the top level races, but there was nothing to do when not watching racing. I couldn't be rude to my mate and go yacking to those racers I knew.
Sounds like this is being addressed though, trade stands etc are being asked for. So hopefully if I get to Taupo for the final round there will be more than just a glorified club meeting (sorry but thats what the ones I've been to look like).

Manfeild will always be a hard one to get people to, 2 hours drive is a bit far for most people. Everything is too hard. Hampton Downs would be a different story id say.
Having a stunt bike like they are having at HDs this year should be good for some entertainment, looking forward to that.
little things to keep the crowd involved, maybe a roaming commentator rocking up to spectators asking them what they ride and who their here to watch etc Maybe at lunch time they could have a guided 5 laps of the track for people to ride their road bikes around behind stroudy.
Maybe get can am to supply a spider and have slight, crosby or stroud take people around the track on it.

why didn't you take your mates along and let them get a look at the riders setups, girlfriends butt cracks etc???, Follow one person in one class through the day and get them to sign your girlfriends bra or something
MIX WITH THE HUMANS
then at hampton downs why don't I try and sort something to do in the other races in the big top, some other bike shit on the big screen lay back and look at .
Be warned though, it'll be historic NZ shit if it's got anything to do with me

What about me and Bob at Timaru and Chch this year Spyda..... we went up and talked......
(Might have been shit talk, but it made a few laugh...)
What about team mechanics, wives or sponsors having a rave too?
Why did you get behind this rider, what can you see in their future? Might encourage others to sponsor....??? If they can see a return.......

It's a tricky one, whatever is done to try and make a difference really isn't felt until the next year. So if something is given a crack it needs to be over a longer term. Trying something and then turfing it just puts us back to year one again. 100 extra people turn up due to ____, they go home and tell a few mates, and hopefully a few extra turn up the following year, they go home and tell a few mates and the year after we have a noticeable difference.
Short of spending huge sums we don't have, nothing is going to turn 1000 spectators into 10,000 overnight. But a small increase year on year is something we can aim for, and is achievable.
It's like the trade stands: businesses put in the effort and no-one rocks up, so they can't be bothered (who can blame them) the next year. 'Course the few people who make a return due to the trade stands come back and see nothing so go home disappointed. And the cycle just continues. Somewhere, sometime the decision has to be made to suck it up in the short term for some long term gain.

yep and it was a pleasure to have you guys up there and anyone else whose got an inside look into a class is what we encourage. Don't be scared of us, we can taylor the questions to suit the person and their persona and make sure they have an enjoyable time of it.
At HD it's a little harder to get across the track to the box, so people don't bother and In my opinion lose an opportunity to promote themselves and their product/sponsors.
It's wider spread of publicity now as the middleman sponsoring a bike/rider who never really went to a meeting before often now listens at home so they get a kick out of their rider/product being promoted.

Yes it costs money, but then you have something better to promote, and get more bums on seats.
I was gunna fork out some good coin to get Schwantz here back in '09 for the TRRS and endurance race. Would have been great for spectators, and I could have chucked the money back at the competitors at the next event.

Yip,
Did that myself this year and enticed Luke Burgess over from Aussie,The benefits are huge in so many ways and the attitude of both Luke and his dad Dale is so different to the Kiwi riders,Theyve turned up for what was basically a free ride and when ever theres been an issue,They don't hesitate to get the cheque book out and fix it,If thats what it takes,Has been a invaluable carrot for young Baillie Perriton and he has risen to the ocassion,Hopefully by raising the bar as Luke has done it will drag some of the kiwi riders up as well and its raised the profile of the class,Also it gives the kiwis an idea of how fast they need to be before considering using up their valuable cash reserves chasing the impossible dream without a clue,Youve got no idea how mant peeps have emailed or rung me to say how much they enjoyed his "Back it in" Style,Especially at Ruapuna,Wouldnt bother with another Kiwi to be honest.

I guess the "how to get spectators to meetings" question was answered when the Classic Register got Schwantz out.
I know it cost them a packet, but the place was absolutely chocka with spectators.
Big name guys from his era that can still ride hard with the best of them are huge drawcards, as opposed to some shuffling old fossil that once rode a big wheel sidecar in 1954.

Sadly NZ is geared to the attention span of a 6 year old - almost everything from TV content to Government policy is done for a quick return.
Ask anyone what there 5 year plan is and their eyes will glaze over "what ?" (mine is limited to "still be above ground")
Never mind a 10, 15 or 25 year plan.
- There are notable exceptions of course -
TAIT in Christchurch for one http://www.taitradio.com/our-company/our-history
(add your favourite :) )
I do know some individuals who have there shit together, have plan and are following it - but not many -
It's a bit like weight loss everyone knows that it is simple -eat right and exercise - but the weight loss business is worth $Billions $Billions because people want to lose weight NOW ( and a bizarre idea that an ideal woman looks like a 14 year old boy ??? )
Sigh...
I wish I DID have a quick fix...

Electric aides on modern GP stuff has ruined it for me - its akin to racing slotcar sets. I liked the switches of the 2 strokes. To me that showed the real skilled riders.

The riders certainly werent any more skilled, they were just riding bikes with less potential. Which equals more excitement because the riders had to ride the bikes over the limit of the bike, now the limit of the bike is much higher. The level of the riders has not dropped.
Rossi waxed all those skilled riders on 2 strokes 500gp bikes

How did the Marlboro Series actually start, can anyone shed a light on that for us,maybe Billy ?
I thought maybe Coleman brought Hennen out in the beginning ?
Maybe the world cash crisis would make this a bad time to promote something like that, together with the state of NZ.

I don't know the answer to that last one and I wonder if bringing out our ex champs would be that appealing to a newer crowd ?
I mean Marlboro was up to the minute whizz kids and I know we loved that. Certainly stunters would work.
It's such a different era now and it would be a brave man putting his money up (and lots more of it now) to gamble on it working.
