I had to make a claim for my helmet and jacket, which was severely munted after my semi-recent tarmac relations. When I called and enquired, they said it was under the same claim as the motorbike. I called back a second time to get their number for faxing the details through, and they said that normally helmet and jacket, etc... is under home and contents, but, since I had been told otherwise, they would process under the motorbike claim.

Today I get a call saying that the Helmet and Jacket are under home and contents, and a claim has to be made under that, with ANOTHER excess. They said these weren't essential items, and you did not need either to ride a motorbike. Exact words, no lie  The woman on the phone is trying to tell me that you don't need a helmet to ride a bike??? Uh huh........

This is my first claim, so I'm just wondering is this normal? Oh, I'll pay an excess to everyone who replies, since I'm paying so many to state, and I'm so broke anyway, won't make much of a fucking difference.

I've seriously had enough of this crap. :(

State insurance - well there was your first mistake. I have never heard anyone say anything good about them, when it is time for them to pay. I guess the only answer is names, and get it in writing...
Helmets shoudl be part of bike Ins IMO, since they are a necessary part of using the vehicle.

I have both the names of the people who told me it was under the same claim as the bike. I have to say, besides this, State haven't been too bad, they accepted the bike claim, and the "accessories" claim with no problem.

Ask the delightful lady at State if they replace seatbelts after a cage prang, if the answer is yes if they are damaged, bingo, so they do helmets as well.
Leather jacket could be one they get snotty on as it is not required by law.

i asked the same question man when i lodged my claim.
unfortunatley its not coverd under the bike insurance even tho it is a result of the accident.
So i think you may have to lodge it on your contents as i have to.

Well after my recent bin (where I didn't claim bike insurance) I claimed with NZI for my helmet, jeans, shoes, gloves and jacket. Made the claim on monday, had the cheque on thursday (less depreciation and $100 excess) and they sent an order form straight through to the motorbike shop for a new helmet for me. Best insurance by far imo.

Like I said, I've got no real problems with State, they have been sufficiently quick. I think the main problem has been the delay in parts for my bike.

Just wish I didn't have the second excess

Can't offer you much advice, except keep hassling them, as they'll try and screw you as much as they can.

Claiming your riding gear under your house and contents policy is standard practice as far as I know. I've done that with State before and had no problems (Helmet, jacket, boots, pants & gloves).

Always get the persons name so you can deal with the same person all the time, if person A stuffed up then person A is more likely to fix it than person B.

Back in the old days ACC would pay without a qualm for replacement gear, helmet, boots, gloves, jacket, whatever. However those days have long gone..... and if it was a serious accident involving serious injury, they'd pay a lump sum for "suffering" etc.

Matthewt: have you been on the x-box again???

What?

Yeah - these days you have to do the injuring to someone else to get a payout for (hurt feelings) suffering. The good news is we get to pay ever-increasing premiums to cover it.

I was insured with State for many years. Had a couple of car claims, no prob's outside of delay in getting assessed (I lived in the sticks at the time). Now I have contents with BNZ, underwitten by Norwich, who own State. When I had my icy step-off a few months back, they were very good. Settled on a value for my damaged gear and credited the money to my bank account overnight.
Bikes are insured with Vero through Golightly. Have never claimed on a bike, so can't comment on their practice, but the premiums are certainly attractive (F650 and CB1100 both covered for less than State wanted to cover just one of them)

It didn't for me: when I got knocked off, the insurance covered the new helmets for my wife and I, no questions, no seperate excess, no arguments. It helped that someone else was at fault, I guess, since my company wasn't paying.

I'm with FMI, though. Given that they quoted $250/year less than State, and would insure against theft and vandalism (which State wouldn't) when I last rung around, perhaps it's just that State are a pack of cunts.

Some bike policies specifically cover some riding gear, helmets and such. Some exclude riding gear. It varies from place to place and can be optional.

Read your fine print to determine whether you are covereds under your bike policy. As you are likely to be claiming on two seperate policies, then you get to pay two sets of excessii.

Unfortunately your policy document outweighs whatever your telephone gimp told you.

I had a car policy once with one excess for damage to my car and another excess payable for damage to anyone elses...in addition to the first.

and sometimes it goes down to the arguments you present to them.

For that "necessary equipment" issue, argue that "the situation is similar to seatbelts in cars in the way that jacket/helmet provides safety issue as seatbelts in cars. In saying that jacket/helmet is not a requirements in riding a bike that person is also saying that seatbelts are not required as well and will not be covered in policy. Is this how your company views the issue? I am sure it is not, and hence I think you should agree that jacket/helmet is an integral part of motorcycling".

I've done that with my missing helmet when the insurer argues that "it would be prudent for him to carry his helmet with him and not just leave it hanging on the bike". I said "if that is the policy, then it will be a bad precedent as you would argue it would be prudent for me to carry my wardrobe with me all the time should I claim it as being stolen, and everybody knows it is not possible for me to carry my wardrobe all the time especially when I am going to the toilet". They yielded and replaced my $400 AGV Q3 with brand new $1200 AGV XVent.....

Nah, anything up to 1am is normal lights out for me. After 1am then probably, Anita's away until Sunday night so I feel a few xBox sessions coming on (should give me time to clear out my current game before Halo2 is released). On a slightly related note I played the MotoGP game and thought it was crap. Their idea of making a fast 180 degree turn is to lock up the front and turn the bike around. Once you master that you get a bonus point for braking "ability". I'm sure the SAS guys probably think the combat games are rubbish as well.

One of the reasons some people are getting helmets etc paid out is due to the fact that they were not to blame in the crash. In these cases it's not your insurer paying, it's the other guy's. If you are not at fault, and your own insurer isn't interested in your stuffed gear, have a go at the third party driver directly through small claims.
