Fascinating... Typical bloody wholesalers!

Are there prizes? Will I get a set of replacement Roadtecs? Are there really elephants involved?

I'll be sorting a route to Taupo for the run from Welly. The plan is to leave WMCC early, ride like fuck to see who can get there the fastest, win all the prizes and ride like fuck back to Welly.

Should be a bit of fun.

Anyone who is slow, gay, doesn't ride a Suzuki, or rides a yellow suzuki need not apply.

jimbo600
26th October 2004, 20:39
OK OK the last post was a bit of fun.

The pukka gen is that I'll probably hold counsel with WMCC dudes and arrange a route and a departure time. It should be noted however that the run will not be a group ride as such but rather an organised route, start time and destination. We want to avoid the pressure of big group rides. Crashing is to be avoided at all costs so this way everyone can go at their own comfortable pace. I however will ride like fuck to get there the fastest etc etc etc.

Interesting that only Suzuki riders have sub-categories for Suzuki riders.

Oh yeah mate. GSXR riders think that they are some sort of esoteric society heros. TL1000 riders imagine they are on reliable Ducati's. SV1000 pilots think that they are on acid. The Suzuki culture is a complicated affair.

Last year "130 wide" got a set of tyres as a prize, not bad for a last minute decision to attend. I think that work once again will get in the road of another great ride :angry2:

Holeshot Motorcycles in Auckland have asked us to orginize the route to Taupo. So what we need is an interesting ride that will get us there by 12:00 without having to leave too early. Suggestions?

Yeah, does your insurance company cover you if you go to a track day??
I’ve read elsewhere on KB that if the gates are left open, your covered but if there closed your own your own, is this the case??
This will be my first, (Yes, I'm a track virgin :o ) and I'll be taking it nice and easy I can assure you all of that!
Do you need to have a full set of leathers to be allowed on the track??
What's the cost of entrance into this prestigious event anyway??

A: Had to.

Q: What's grey and comes in pints?

A: An elephant.

Q: Why are elephants large, grey and wrinkled?

A: Because if they were small, white and smooth they'd be aspirins.

Do we have the oportunity to join the ride south of Auckland, ? Say BP Papakura
Don't want to ride all the way to the north shore just to come back down the motorway again.
HW 22 then Te Kuiti, Bennydale, Mangakino, then part way down the westside of Taupo then across is a good ride.
Where is the racetrack in Taupo ?

Where is the racetrack in Taupo ?

The Track is on the way from Rotorua, via Broadlands road, about 10 mins from Taupo. See the attached map for directions. Taken from TUMONZ, The Ultimate Map of New Zealand, who I work for. If you need a map for anything, TUMONZ is the answer.

Details of NZ tracks can be found in the FAQ (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/faq.php?).

There is going to be a Supermotoard event at Taupo track that day and the Elephant riders will get time on the track when the Supermotoard riders have their lunch break. Which is why we need to arrive before 12.

You can go to www.tumonz.co.nz (http://www.tumonz.co.nz) to find out more and purchase online. It's great for organising rides, as it can plot the route and show you turn by turn directions. You can also put any route into a line height profile to show you the side on view of your proposed ride.

I've been down the Ngaruawhia to Otorohanga back raod route through to Te Kuiti so that's sweet.

This is the route I've set so far:
Ngaruawhia to Otorohanga,
SH3 to Te Kuiti,
Turn onto SH30, Through Benneydale,
past SH32 Through Whakamaru (still 30),
after Hikrangi Is. on Lake Whakamaru (SH30, Ongaroto Rd) take the first right onto Tram Rd,
Stay on Tram Rd and cross SH1 (Tram Rd is the right hand road on the other side of SH1),
Accross Tutukau Rd (still on Tram Rd) to T with SH5,
Left onto SH5 past Palmer Mill Rd (on your right) take the next left onto Aratiatia Rd,
past the spillway take the 2nd left onto Veiw Rd,
At the T with Broadlands go right,
The Taupo Track should be by the next Rd on your right.

Sounds good to me so that would make it around 8.30 at the Autobahn which I presume is the one at Papakura as its easier to get in and out of and not the Bombay one
The route by riderinblack also sounds good to me although it may be better to turn right at Rangiriri and over the bridge to get off SH 1 earlier and do the backroad to huntly and Ngaruawahia as its a quieter road

TUMONZ is right. After the raglan turn off there is about 3 parts of metal, it is not un-ridable. But have to keep it slow and steady, I have rode thru it on the VTR250 with a GSX250. And I have only 3 good months of riding experience so its passable. but do u want to go that way?

Nup. You just turn up at work at 7:00am on the Sunday morning. Everyone will be given a ride plan and we leave at 7:15 sharp.

It's not going to be a race but it wont be a stop every five minutes type ride either. You'll keep up no worries.

No ticket required - just have to "sign on" when you get to the destination to make sure you are in the prize draws. Anyone wnting to go on the track for a ride, it is being organised by he race meeting promoter, track open from 12 till 1pm, and cost indication is $20. He reserves the right to limit numbers on the track at any one time, so it could be a case of first in gets the rides.
See you all there - and good luck on wining some awesome Metzeler tyres or other stuff!

Heh heh - I just went out to the garage and found a completely, completely flat tyre! :shit: What a surprise eh. Must have got a puncture as I came home last night (it did start feeling that way a couple of ks up the road). It'll be sorted by tomorrow avo but new tyres are always helpful - especially for us Uni folk with "student slicks". At least I got my money's worth out of it and used it till death did us part.

TUMONZ is right. After the raglan turn off there is about 3 parts of metal, it is not un-ridable. But have to keep it slow and steady, I have rode thru it on the VTR250 with a GSX250. And I have only 3 good months of riding experience so its passable. but do u want to go that way?Not if it's metal (enough of that with the road works:finger: ). OK somebody suggest the Ak to Ngaruawhia bit (quick). I'm thinking of doing a trail run of the AK to Taupo Track this weekend if any are keen (Doug:mobile: Ph/Txt 027 4534350). "Roxanne" is itching for a ride this weekend:ride:

A mate and I will be taking the long way to Taupo - leaving Friday. Taking the day off and heading there via Coromandel, Whangamata, Whakatane and Rotorua. Just so happened we had this ride planned a while ago. Being a couple of "Miss Daisy" type riders we need 2 days to get there.

Look forward to it heaps.

New Route(Not the best route but one that will get us to Taupo on Time) :
SH 1 from Holeshot pass Papakura Auto Barn. Riders wishing to join there, we'll pass 20-30mins after leaving Holeshot. If they leave @ 8am they will only just get to the track on time, so they will not have time to stop and wait for riders. So watch for the bikes to go past and join there. If they have not past by 8:30am, go (otherwise you will not get to the track on time).
13-15Km past Meremere turn right down Rd signed to Glen Murray at Rangiriri (this goes over a long Traffic Lighted One-Way Bridge over the Waikato. On the otherside of the bridge turn left and follow the Rd that follows the river. There is some fresh tarsealing at the Ngaruawhia end, so watch out of Pea-Metal.
At Ngaruawhia follow the signs to Otorohanga (don't rejoin SH1).
At Otorohanga take SH3 to Te Kuiti.
At Te Kuiti take SH30 (signed to Rotorua and Taupo, Through Benneydale (there is a bit of seal repairs so stay sharp),
past SH32 through Whakamaru (still 30) to 'T' with SH1.
Turn right down SH1 (watch for :Police: cops).
Turn left down Palmer Mill Rd (it's the next left after passing Tutukau Rd/Orakei-Korako).
At 'T' with SH5 turn right, then take the next left onto Aratiatia Rd (has big brown sign with Aratiatia Rapids on it),
past the "Rapids" take the 2nd left onto Veiw Rd,
At the T with Broadlands go right,
The Taupo Track should be by the 2nd Rd on your right.

PS: I strongly suggest that they leave Holeshot by at least 7:30am or the Papakura Auto Barn by at least 8am as it took me just under 4hrs to get from the Track to past the Takapuna off-ramp (3 1/2Hrs to pass Papakura) on the way back from Taupo Track yesterday (and I was fair halling it:innocent: ). Remember the track will be only open from 12 to 1 and it is first in first serve (which will probably mean that the Welly riders will get to go on the track and the Dorklands will miss out as they cann't get their arses out of bed early enough:whocares:

Leave Holeshot at 07:30. Make sure you are fully fuelled up before leaving.
SH 1 from Holeshot to Papakura Autobahn 20-30mins later. We will only be stopping at the Autobahn long enough for the riders there to get on their bikes and go.
13-15Km past Meremere turn right down Rd signed to Glen Murray at Rangiriri (this goes over a long Traffic Lighted One-Way Bridge over the Waikato. On the other side of the bridge turn left and follow the Rd that follows the river. There is some fresh tarsealing at the Ngaruawhia end, so watch out of Pea-Metal.

Will ring them to see if they are open on Sundays.they are now called "Whakamaru Gas", are open 8am-5pm 7days/week (so they will be open on Sunday) and are on the corner of SH30 And SH32. This would be a good stop, so I recommend Fuel departing AK, then Otorohanga and then at Whakamaru. This will allow for those with a stort range and still leave you gas for the track (which is about 65Km from Whakamaru). Remember it can take about 10-15mins to fuel and pay, so don't muck around too much at the Service stations. Please fuel, shift your bike, and then pay so the next one can get started:niceone:

Had originally told the dudes at Holeshot that we would be leaving at 08:00. Was there today and they said many people have rung up and they told them this was the leaving time. :pinch:

So since I'm not that worried about getting on the track, I am thinking about also leaving there at 08:00 instead of 07:30 to take any late arrivals down the route.

Are there any others wishing to sleep in for an extra 1/2 hour and leave Holeshot with me at 08:00? Preferably someone who is familiar with the route and knows were he’s going. ;)

I came down today on my lonesome, and I used the exact route that was proposed from Auckland.

The weather was pretty much perfect all the way, unlike the forecast. Currently in Taupo, 6.30pm Saturday, it is warm and dry.

I have never taken that route before, it is a good one. However the road surface is frequently dodgy, i.e. loose gravel, localised repairs. It was hard to have confidence in the bends as you didn't know what the surface would be like when you got into them. Saying that the last 50 km to Taupo was prefect and in great condition, I think it was the SH30/3 section. Truly awesome.

I saw one cop car the whole time. However I was nearly taken out by an errant sheep that decided to cross the road at the same time I came pass at about 200kmh!

Right logging off, see you guys tomorrow at the track. I'm off to the pub. :niceone:

met at Bike Force Rotorua 9am being true to form I was there a bit early after leaving in torrential rain that not even the guttering could remove the sheer volume of water falling from the sky. A dozen or so bikes departed for Taupo via Putaruru Whakamaru and the back roads to Taupo. Fair to middling weather for the ride even some dry road for a bit.

Spank Me joined the group at Whakamaru great to finally meet some of the KB guys. I was rapt to find a group of guys who rode at my pace. Arrived at the track and signed in and looked over the bikes assembled all seemed to be under 10 yrs old except an old trumpy and my XV, still it made it there and back and kept up with the group I was riding with.

The prizes were duly dished out, the question answer prizes were at bit of a laugh as no one wanted to answer them but for those who did there were hats and polo shirts and magazine subscriptions. I gave my hat to my boy as he was not able to come on the ride due to the weather. The ride was well worth attending just turn up and be in with a grin to win some great merchandise.

The ride home was wet and windy, decided to go via Murupara to Te Teko and home. The service station at Murupara had its pumps being upgraded and gas was dispenced by some ancient pump that came out of Motat.

For those who did not go because of the rain or turned back as a group did at Waiouru you missed a great day. Watching the super motard and quads hoon around the track before the guys took their machines for a blast was cheap intertainment. The Duc that binned was a mess (photo below) but glad that the rider was up and about obviously gutted that he had dropped it by his gestering.

Swanman, that bike of yours is a JET on the straight. Good to meet Hodgeman and a few others.

Good to LAP Deano on the track (heh heh, sorry mate)

Teh ride home got pretty Psyco from Raetahi south. Lots of scraping, grinding and sliding on perfect 25 deg roads. Absolutely balls out for 80k or so. Get to Wangas, fill up with gas and 2 minutes later, Velox catches up on her 250. Good stuff.

Good work for organising it Metzeler and F&D people - there were some pretty decent prizes there! Just a pity about the rain eh? I didn't realise so many KBers were there - I met a couple of new ones and caught a fleeting glimpse of SpankMe but that was about it (apart from people I already knew). Awesome ride up and back, it just wasn't so good on the Plateau where it rained the whole time (north of National Park). Lots of fun in the Paraparas, man - you guys are fast!

A couple of funny incidents though from the ride up and back...

After we had passed through National Park, 3 of our Wgtn crew hooned off into the distance and 1 dropped behind so I was battling away in the middle somewhere when suddenly I saw them coming back in the opposite direction motioning that there was a cop ahead. I thought that maybe the road was blocked (flooding or Police maybe?) and so turned around to follow them. We passed the other one of our other guys going in the opposite direction and I waved and wondered why no-one else did until I realised that there were 4 bikes in front of me, one was yellow (which we didn't have before) and Deano's helmet had miraculously changed colour. Realised I had no idea who these people were and turned around and headed back north. Oh dear. But - the front bike was a new GSXR like Jimbo's.

Secondly, when we left the track at Taupo I put on my styley $2 shop poncho thing over my jacket and got it tied up at the back so I wouldn't turn into a kite. Got into Taupo and as I stopped at the second intersection I suddenly found myself sitting inside a small black tent in the middle of the road. As I braked it all just neatly flowed over my head and went down over the instrument panel and turned into a little 'dome of isolation' pitched at the stop sign. I had to just turn off the bike and laugh, must've been funny for the guy that pulled up beside me at the same time.

Now your talking sense man. That trike looks pretty damn good alright. And I'm sure we can sort some pencil cam shit for next year. I wonder if I'll have a new bike then too?
