View Full Version : Are CDI units for PE175 interchangeable?

Can you replace the CDI unit on a Suzuki PE175 (1980 twinshock enduro) with any other CDI unit? What other changes would be required? Or what other way is there to get a PE175 running properly again. Can a CDI from a motocross RM model be used instead, and will the PE get the extra power and peakiness of the RM motor as a result?
Advice would be appreciated!

I once replaced a CDI on my PE250 with one from a RM125. So the change you are suggesting should work.
Don't expect to see any improvement in performance though. Be aware that the rev limiter may cut in at a different RPM.

Thanks! That's encouraging! Anyone else swap another bike's CDI on to a PE? Perhaps one off a Yam or Kawa or Honda? How did the other CDI alter the power delivery of the original PE?

No change in power delivery, but it was prone to over rev.

If you put a CDI for a hi-rev 125cc 2-stroke single into a 250cc 2-stroke single and it would then over-rev, does it follow that if you used a CDI from a big 400cc 2 stroke single on a smaller bike (say a 250cc or 175cc) that it then wouldn't actually rev out all the way?
