Time to go for a decent one day ride, one that encampasses some of the best roads in the country if not the world.
For your riding pleasure may I introduce: The Block (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=4826010222016507298,-41.988340,172.217140%3B7611079474693896292,-41.819019,171.605888&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=Christchurch,+New+Zealand&daddr=SH+65+%40-41.988340,+172.217140+to:Lower+Buller+Gorge+Rd+%40-41.819019,+171.605888+to:hokitika+to:Haast+to:Wana ka,+Otago,+New+Zealand+to:omarama+to:Christchurch, +New+Zealand&mra=pi&mrcr=6&sll=-44.22552,170.958252&sspn=1.964325,5.251465&ie=UTF8&ll=-43.213183,171.77124&spn=3.995639,10.50293&z=7&om=1)(anticlockwise route)
I reckon early January, say Saturday the 5th? (I'm back to work on the 3rd otherwise I would have suggested that) and wet or fine (maybe).
Will mean a crack of dawn start...and don't expect to be home in time for dinner..
How many masochists have we got? (I know you're out there as I can think of at least two you...)

The plan looks good.. me would have to say I am in... dont think I have anything on then. No shutdown at work for me, or ay holidays at this stage. But alas should be able to work it.
Yeah so what.... we do the run clockwise.... then get home, and turn right round and do an anti??? :jerry::niceone: I am guessing that is for another bright sunny day.
So who are the other two you are thinking of that will be in??
Would deff need some care :doctor:after a ride like this... no mater the seat.. serious numbess would set in.
Oh imagine the pain on this one, would make for a great two dayyer (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=4540422593654041068,-41.372250,173.947940%3B4826010222016507298,-41.988340,172.217140%3B7611079474693896292,-41.819019,171.605888%3B11883049826431384102,-46.416770,168.347310%3B12572736837917081523,-45.901270,170.378140&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=Christchurch,+New+Zealand&daddr=SH+1+%40-41.372250,+173.947940+to:-41.310824,173.29834+to:SH+65+%40-41.988340,+172.217140+to:Lower+Buller+Gorge+Rd+%40-41.819019,+171.605888+to:hokitika+to:Haast+to:Wana ka,+Otago,+New+Zealand+to:Clyde+St+%40-46.416770,+168.347310+to:Dunedin+Southern+Motorway +%40-45.901270,+170.378140+to:omarama+to:Christchurch,+ New+Zealand&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=6&via=1,2,8,9&sll=-44.918139,176.901855&sspn=9.601207,23.950195&ie=UTF8&ll=-44.103365,176.11084&spn=9.735712,23.950195&z=6&om=1)

I could be in and a little rain will not put me off.
After all we may get it on one side of the Alp's.
I have done 920 K's in a day so should be up for it with a few gas stops to get the numbess out of fingers and ass.
I think that we should put as many k's behind us at the start as it is going to get harder and harder at the end.
And like you said a early start will be good
And will help us before the traffic builds up.

I like your thinking there young man, that would be great for mid/late February. Have to go clockwise though.
I could be in and a little rain will not put me off.
After all we may get it on one side of the Alp's.
If we don't have a nor'wester blowing then she'll be all good. Even if we do it'll only be wet for half the ride. Its all good.

So Mr S. that's half way between all the 1000km rides and all the 1600km rides. Seems to be a bit of an odd distance.
I'm doing the 1000km mostly shingle Dusty Butt ride that weekend so am unable to attend.
Maybe next time, although 1000km is close to my limit, the bum hurts more on big sealed road trips than big shingle trips..

This is NOT a trip for commuter bikes nor for highly strung two strokes.

Yeah maybe. The distance is purely incidental to the route, which had to take in Lewis Pass, the entire Buller Gorge, and the entire length of the West Coast road. Best of luck with your DB ride TA.

We have 3-5 that are keen and that's enough.
And you have a few weeks to recover so you could easily do both, if you want to.

Going clockwise I added up the times. From Chch to Omarama is 13 hours 54 minutes and that's not counting rest stops. Add about four hours to Chch from Omarama and you get 17hours.54mins. That's riding time or there abouts. take in coffee and piss stops you could add two hours min. So you are getting into a 19+ hour trip. Bit far for my arse to handle.

Yep I agree that a smallish number of experianced riders would be the way to go but the thread was a group KB ride with no numbers restrictions and on basis I think it is too far. Get some newbie trying to keep up and you have a recipee for disaster. I'm interested in the Westport and thru Grey and back thru Arthers pass. That's about 800k's. So I'm in for that. The other way if you have more for the complete ride is to divide into two groups fast and a slow group. Mind you I'd be in my own one for that distance. The real slow but hey I'm an old man..........I know my limits. Just my thoughts on this. Well well well the icons are back. Thank you Huey.:jerry:

And threw in open to see who else are keen.

I though about that as well.
But at the time we are starting would probably rule out all but the keen.
And I do not think we will be pissing about, because of the time it will take to do the whole ride.
When we see who is coming and work out petrol stop's for the shortest range bike, it will become clearer on where and when we will be stopping and for how long.
It may pay to going the other way and meet us at one of our stops. (Kumara? or Greymouth?)
Then we will not be waiting and you can ride at your own place.
And if the worst comes to the worst, we can wave as we pass on the road.
These are just my ideas and it will have to be talked about.

The other alternitive that sounds better for those that don't want to do the full trip is to cut through Arthers, miss Greymouth and swing south through Haast and the Fox and meet up at Wanaka. Those that have done the full tripp will be wanting to pace themselves on the final leg. Early days but that appeals to me. There is some nice country down that way. Pity to miss it all with speed. It's still a serious e ride.

Should be a great ride,i cant wait. After my ride to Tauranga and back i covered 1900km in two days with two ferry crossings,a couple of hours wait at ferry terminals and heavy rain on the whole trip.17 hours to get there and 16 hours to get back. And that was just cruising. Then i think this round the coast ride is going to be a great fun ride. With a good bunch of guys to ride with and everyones bike all set and ready for the trip then we should be all set.

Indeed, and if you pull the handles on the route on the google map to cut across Arthurs Pass thus missing the top bit then it becomes 1095km which was what I was thinking of for a big one next year.
I know you're all set to go via Lewis etc, I'm just saying that I agree with the accuracy of the distances stated for your route as 1345km.
Of course if I were to do it you'd loose me as soon as you maintained a ticketing speed for any length of time especially on the straights.
I'd have to skip or cut short the stops to catch up, but my cornering speed is just fine thank you very much ;)

Publicly I'm going to have to say legal. I will not be riding at anywhere near licence losing speeds.

I would also add that speed plays a big factor in how tiring a ride can be, that faster you go the more concentration, energy, stamina, etc needed.

Just did this twin passes loop (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=574025995737393524,-42.213422,171.952919%3B16591140265991010207,-42.236320,171.699470%3B5832311362235510222,-43.145640,171.744450&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=Christchurch,+New+Zealand&daddr=SH+7+%40-42.213422,+171.952919+to:SH+7+%40-42.236320,+171.699470+to:-42.599598,171.540527+to:W+Coast+Rd+%40-43.145640,+171.744450+to:Christchurch,+New+Zealand&mra=dme&mrcr=2,3&mrsp=3&sz=9&sll=-42.771211,171.609192&sspn=0.868989,2.232971&ie=UTF8&ll=-42.875964,172.337036&spn=1.735058,4.465942&z=8&om=1)with J today.... Google maps quotes 550km 7hours 28minutes.
We recorded it as 555km from my place near the center of ChCh.
We mostly travelled at posted +5 to +8 except a bit with the wind behind us near the Hamner area through to around the Waipara area. So I think most the smaller cc bikes would be ok with us at those speeds. That is you shouldn't blow them up.
We stopped for a total of 1 hour 30 minutes. Including the stops it took us 8 hours, 15 minutes.
Our days stops went like so...
7 minutes approx - Christchurch, for fuel
4 minutes - Springfield, for a stretch
10minutes - Arthurs Pass town, toilet and put wet weather gear on
15minutes - Jacksons, removed fork brace from my DR and installed it on Js so she could try it again (she went and queued for a coffee there but I was finished before she got to the front of the queue so we carried on with out the coffee).
4 minutes - Ikamatua, stretch
40minutes - Reefton, repack wet weather gear, did lunch and fuel
10minutes - Hurunui, stretch and drink
Next stop was back home in ChCh.

Unfortunately I have the Nationals on at that time or I would have been quite keen :crybaby:
It's been a while since I've done a big one day ride
It's been a while since you done a ride with us at all.
Accurate to with in say about 40km over the entire route added up.
Be keen to hear some odometer readings at each end.
I checked against another distance calculator and also with the charts in the real paper map books I have.
1302km was the shortest I got, 1345km was the longest.
Ta for that, didn't think Google Maps would be too far out.
why not do the 1000 miler this comming weekend & just for a little extra ride we can travel to & from Alexandra ;)
shrek :bleh:
Maybe next year. The extra 1000ks to get there and back would make it one hell of a long weekend!

Well I thought that I may need this by the end of the trip.
It's the smallest Givi fairing.
It may be small, but does do the job. (yes I'm still talking about the fairing you dirty little buggers)
I have to get use to all the helmet buffering and noise because of all the extra air coming off the fairing and hitting the helmet.
So I'm back to wearing ear plugs again. Bugger it.

Nice Lemans, dose not detract from the look of the bike at all either.
I aggree, it is amazing how well somthing so small can impact on overall comfort, the same I say for my Guzzi named "fly screen" on the grizz

Yeah my old Katana 1100 only had a small bit of plastic and worked real well.
And you did notice if you took it of.
As I can take it on and off so quick, two bolts to loosen and re tighten.
I think I will have off more than on, but for big or fast trips it will go back on.

What about your last 3 or 4 bikes?:wait:
I got it for this ride only as the last few hours could be painful.

OK you crazy bastards - this is just mad enough to appeal to my sense of adventure (even if there's no gravel!)
Not sure I want to start and finish in ChCh though - sooo - a plan is fermenting.
By my rough reckonings from looking at your map and the times you have on it, you should be around Fox/ Franz around 11 hours after you start????
If I've got that bit right , and assuming you get away around 6am then you'll be there around 6-8 pm depending on stops etc.
If I could interest one or more other similarly crazy minded KB'rs from around here, maybe we could meet you at Fox or Franz, ride back with you to Omarama, then we;ll head home from there. I know that means we would have to ride South Westland and the Haast Pass twice in one day but in the interests of KB camaraderie that is a cross we are willing to bare - if we had to do the Lindis twice as well we might just be able to cope with that too!!
(Of course we might get really sneaky and ride up the day before so we get a sleep in !!!)

Still on as far I'm concerned. TBH I haven't given a great deal of thought apart that I'll need a new pair of shoes for the trip. The Duc has had its major service, the oil leak has been fixed, all good to go.

Google maps has Chch to Fox at 654km (http://tinyurl.com/28e6vg) - I'd say 8-9 hours...
If I've got that bit right , No :bleh:

New shoes on my horse today, and I dont evn think she kicked when they nailed them on!!!!
An oil transfusion is all that is needed. And a bit of a run to make sure nothing leaks out or falls off.
A sure hike for sure. The horse is going to be looking forward to the watering hole stops as much as I will be. And as long as I dont get any flu's or any other brain slowing ills, I am in like Flyn!!

they chickened out of the 'big block' and just did the two passes. all talk this lot you will come to relise this.
But yeah over 2 days defnitly, in your case Id add on the Crown range and back the Kawawau gorge.

The ride itself was wicked, perfect weather both sides of the hill, was about 670km in the end, and tho think that would have been only half of the full block. I think a full on training program would have to be in force to pull off the big one.
The coastline is awesoem from Wesport through Grey'.
No doubt it would be something to do the big one, and I guess it would be big in itself if even split into a two day jaunt.
Some Pictures from the ride can be seen through the link to my albums below. in my sig'

So ya didn't go all the way... are ya planning to have a better crack at it soon?
We did our big one, Dusty Butt.. 1000km in a day, about 3/4 shingle and dirt roads and tracks.
Group i was with took 19 hours and 50 minutes, we were second group back, then had to ride home from Nelson next day and at work now.
Once the bikes cleaned up and I got some more fuel money I'd look at doing your plan A... or at least going straight over Arthurs then down to Haast and back through Tekapo.

The Arthurs/Haast looop was talked about on the weekend, wouldn't be a bad run either. Don't know when though or the original proposed ride here. I think its a spring/early summer ride and needs to be spontaneous to a fair degree.
Well done on your DB run TA.
