I had one in my jacket pocket when I crashed in Aussie last month. It survived just fine. If you are worried then buy one of those small leather pouches to carry it in for added protection.

I am not concerned about scraping, i am concerned about crushing. A 120 odd KG body landing on it etc.

Ya just a big softie.... Just don't put it anywhere on you it may be forced to hide in a crash!

Another Idea is to put a contact under emergency contact. Many riders in the USA do this so that if for what ever reason they can not communicate a number is easy to find in their cell phone.

So in a tank bag you mean? Or just in a part of the body you do not land on?

Yes. I have this but ti would not be much good if the phone was broken....

It's going to be pretty hard to predict whether or not where you stored your phone will or will not come into contact with the road, a tree, barrier or otherwise. Everyone's circumstances will be completely different.
Given the location of most pockets, if it is either of the last two objects you hit (hard), I'd would say you won't be physically able to call - even if the cellphone is still working.
Always carry a photo driver licence and next of kin contact details.

The only item that survived my crash in June was my jacket, pants cut to pieces by ambo staff, helmet with road rash, boots also cut off by ambo staff but the only day ive EVER not taken my cell phone but with the jacket being still like new I guess the phone would have survived...............not that all crashes are the same so you can ignore any advice given by anyone who has crashed..........or not

Maybe one of the cops or ambo dudes could tell you more, but I have never seen a biker jacket with serious road rash around the top front pocket. Anyway, you wont need it cos you crash, you will need it when the last tooth on your back sprocket comes off, and you need to find a kber with a ute. (Heres betting you haven't fixed that sprocket yet !) Cheers Dave

take one anyway - its better to try than to bin at night down a ditch where you cant be seen from the road.
My phone fell out of my pocket at 160km/hr, still works.

When I came off my bike - and OK, it wasn't anything spectacular - my phone was in the inside top pocket of my jacket.
I did an incredibly uncomfortable roll and slide for a wee way which caused some spectacular bruising to the booby area, but my phone (which was in the same vicinity) was totally fine. I guess the cushioning must have helped, eh?!
The smaller phones seem to get, the less damage I guess they'd sustain cos there's less of them to touch down.

If it breaks it breaks... I NEVER go anywhere without it... Its that simple...
I also txt my old lady when I get to certain towns etc... Least that way she knows where abouts to "start looking" if there is ever a time when I *don't* make it home...
Beats saying.. "hey I'm off to Auckland".. Thats 4 hours drive away.. I could be anywhere between home and my destination...
Call me paranoid... *shrug*

I've not made it home before... Twice in fact.. First time I near killed myself.. And she recieved the knock on the door...
I guess its not just for me.. I do it for her, so that she doesn't sit here worrying about me... If I'm not home by a certain time (when she expects me to be) first thing she does is call my cellphone

Crashed a couple of times with my phone in my jeans pocket. Never broke, Wasn't till I rode home from Hamilton in the rain that the phone stopped working so just take it with you (in a plstic bag if it look like rain...) and don't worry about it.
As for it breaking when you fall on it, you're a bit softer than the phone dude. Unless you've got it up against a spot where your bones are close to the surface, don't worry about it.

This has all been done before but there's a lotta new people here since.
The usual argument comes down to whether you have it in a pocket where it can cause injury, or have it in the tank bag or similar where you may not be able to reach it in the event you are injured in an accident.
Of course it's all immaterial really, 'cause Murphy will likely arrange it so there's no coverage in that area anyway...
For the record I want it with me, so it has a pocket reserved.
Afterthought: Actually I originally bought the cell phone specifically for solo riding. I have subsequently seen it recommended in one or other of the bike mags.

Lets hope that you will never have to test it though huh!
Phoenix has his under the seat, but I guess that would suck if you had to get it out in an emergency.
I jsut have mine in my jacket. I figure if I crash and dont have it, chances are it would have been fine and I could have called for help.

I crashed hard with my phone in my right jacket pocket. Judging by the rest of my gear I was sure that it was fucked. But I pulled it out, and not even so much as a scratch on it :o

Always have a phone on me .. and always make sure Grub has his ... the thing is they are built so extremely hardy that they normally are fine .. and if they aren't someone can switch the sim (if vodafone) to get the details anyway ... I expect to hear from the lad if there is a problem .. if I don't hear from him during a trip I get antsy!

I'm the guy you can thank for you not having a crash because I carry shit Karma for about 6-7 people.
Those 4 accidents were only the ones where I was carrying too.
1. RG250 - Painted two weeks previous. While fairing was away, it got a de-coke and top end rebuild. Truck charged across 2 lanes of the motorway and knocked me over the barrier. I saw him at the last second and nearly pulled off the braking maneuver of the century. The tail light assembly hit my left clip on and threw me off the bike and into the barrier. Broken wrist and cracked rib. The cracked rib was from the cellphone in my breast pocket.
2. RG400 - Bus leaves trail of diesel up Houghton Bay Rd. I lose the rear end. So do the two bikes behind me. Wife smashes her ankle to bits. Cellphone is under the seat. Cellphone fine. Ring ambulance. Have vivid memory of young lady doing flying W toward me. She's just crashed her Husband's brand new XJ600
3. RC30 - Drunk old dude pulls out of side street in Picton. No headlights. No streetlights. Again I see him at the last second. I hit his front right wheel and sail over the car. He panics and drives over me breaking my neck and back. Cellphone was in tailpack. Cellphone is fine. I'm unconscious and keep dying in the ambulance so I forget to ring my wife. First memory is the holes in the ceiling tiles at Blenheim hospital 3 days later.
4. TRX850 - Corner on Rimutakas. Covered in dirt. Truck has hit the cliff beside the road and dragged a small slip down. Avoid slip, road is awash with diesel from ruptured fuel tank. Tank bag with cellphone in it flies off and slides along the road. Cellphone fine. Ring Motorad to come and get the wreckage, ring Police to report diesel spill. Get, "Big Deal" as a response. Ring long suffering wife to pick my sorry arse up.
I'm not telling you about my racetrack accidents as I never carry a phone on the track. They cause Cancer you know.

Yup, in my wallet I have me licence but to get it out you have to remove the card with my name / numbers and wifes name/ numbers on it.
Usually have my phone in my bag if I have one, or in my pocket with my wallet.

My phone took the brunt of the impact in my pants pocket when I came off going at ~40ks. No damage apart from minor scratches to the plastic, too bad the same can't be said for the bike

Had a friend once who was looking at buying a new cell phone. The guy in the vodafone shop in Auckland told him it was shock proof and would survive being dropped off a 10 storey building. As my friend worked as on construction sites he figured this was wonderful. So he picked said phone up and threw it across the shop. It hit the wall and fell to the floor.
"What the hell are you doing?" screamed the shop keeper. "You'll break it!!"
Turns out it was shock proof and my mate brought it.

I always carry at least one cell phone...mad if you don't IMO.
Have also learnt to carry them in a zip lock bag after Unit drowned hers on a trip up North one day in some lovely spring weather...expensive lesson!
Edit: Current cellphones have survived 2x bins just fine.

Phone isn't so bad but I'm real careful about keys in pockets etc. Don't want one a them puppies between the ribs!
Get a cheap phone, video phones etc are just wank. I have the Nokia with the LED light on the top. It's the only feature I give a shit about. Battery life is good too. Seriously, get a shit one. Mine was $99 full price and 12 months interest free on my home line. Break it? No worries.

Put it under your pillion seat.
If its in your jacket, dont leave your pockets undone....usually when they hit the ground from leaving your pocket they never survive...
6 cell phs later, and I've given up:girlfight:

My suggestions are:
- buy a 'bar' phone ie not a clamshell so it is slimmer in your pocket and less to damage and squash in an accident
- buy a cheap one so the death of the phone won't hurt so much and go for Nokia for better reception in poor reception areas.
- Store in chest pocket of leather motorcycle jacket. Side pockets will definitely get a pounding if you 'off'

Well, after reading all that, my phone is traumatised and refuses to go on the bike...cowardly plastic thingy.
Couple of things to think about tho; We are relying on it for assistance when we need it, fine around town where there are sign posts etc so you know where you are, not so fine when parked in a grassy ditch in the dark.
If your riding in rural areas have a think about how you tell someone how to find you. I always try and remember the name of the road I'm on and about how may Kms I am from a landmark, gives you something to think about on the straight bits...
Without good directions emergency services can't find you. Remember this.

Having a phone in a chest pocket should be no worries. Haven't had a bin yet - but have had some mighty spectacular crashes skiing ;)
It survived that no worries! However, I do think it didn't like it when I dropped and forgot it at Treble Cone...
Still, I'd always bring it and keep it in a chest pocket. Even when in the backcountry you'd be amazed at the places where you can get reception these days.
As someone put further up - make sure to put in an emergency contact number. I put mine under ICE - In Case of Emergency - and have both my partner and my parents number stored there.

I binned my Trek on the road at about 30kph a while back with my cellphone in the hip pocket of my cycling jersey. Came down smack on it. It survived and worked just fine, but the speaker sounded a bit distorted.
So I threw it away and went back to the Telecom shop for another $30 Nokia 2125.
Disposable mobile phones ftw.

If your planning on using your phone in emergencies and your out for a ride. Switching cell sites or roaming will chew battery like nothing else so leave it off. Also, if your phone gets wet but it's off you can dry it out and it should be fine. Using it while wet there's a good chance of stuffing it.
