Check around the bike shops and get a price on a Ventura pack rack. Otherwise perhaps some throw over panniers. Just don't take too much gear, and don't be in too much of a hurry on the mighty GN.

Depending on what you want to take, RJays make some good expanding type packs, the sections zip down when not in use and can then be expanded as you collect souveniers along the way.

Get a good map. there are travel type maps that show tent sites, DOC camp sites etc. Just depends on where you want to go, Camp Reienga is good, taking the bike down 90 mile beach is worthwhile

GN250? Check you oil level twice a day and schedule a couple of changes - it's not hard to do but it will need fresh oil under heavy use.

I have a couple of cheapie throw over panniers that work well on a lighter bike - you can have em for $50 if you want.

Yea, go with panniers mate, if your wanting to travel a bit of distance, it helps having as much weight as you can down low, especially on the windy days!
Good luck with your trip!

I just rode from Dunedin to Auckland in four days on my SR250, pretty much the same as a GN. I had a packrack, with a tramping pack strapped and cable-tied to it and resting on the pillion seat. Held a shitload of gear and made a great backrest, but it makes everything pretty top heavy, so the occasional detour onto a gravel road was hairy. I was planning to put a rubbish bag over that whole unit if I got rained on, but it was sunshine the whole way, so no worries.

I also bought a tank bag just before the trip, and can't recommend it enough. It's great having the map and cellphone easily visible there, and you can store your lunch and random shit there easily.

Have a great ride, go the 250 touring!
