Good to see experienced riders helping newer ones. May I suggest fewer exercises, and more awareness. As mentioned in: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=61563

Nothing like going for a ride to get to the ride haha.
Next someone will do Friday at Dairy Flat and we'll have all of Auckland covered ;)

Was thinking of KB meeting points more than the destination. So far there's Panmure Monday, Westgate Wednesday so I can just imagine everyone in Silverdale and Orewa thinking of starting a 3rd :)
Can never have too many people helping the ever increasing learner population if you ask me. I'm keen to check them all out just to meet the crazy KB'ers in this crazy city
I've seen more 250's out today than anything else and I saw a load of bikes. Innit great!

Well state HW16 had alot of new road works just to get us there...We were expecting this as i had ridden it in the morning. However was still a bit weary going downhill on this stuff into corrners...(keept bike upright, No breaks just used gears) but didnt know if it was ok.... Woodcocks road its self i led not one of us had ever been on this road so just took it at an easy pace dropping back as needed as i know fireball does not feel comfortable on all corrners...Wich was cool after going down the hill it was a prety easy ride except the dam crain...

Also, probably can't go to the wednesday night mentor thing this week (exam next day :argh: ) but should be good for the week after.

No worries Fireball....its on every monday :woohoo:
I was pleased with the turn out, and where we were practising, did throw alot of challenges at the riders for a small piece of road! not only did we have trucks coming and going and participating around the cones, but also there was a good chance to really learn how to read a road, what was on it, and also there were a couple of nice tight corners to practise ya cornering on after the exercises!
Im waiting to hear back from the Mount Wellington Go Kart track to see if we can use it once a month..or to see if we can score it for an occasional mini track day for newbies. Fingers crossed..

I've got a battery charger and leads...pm me if you need to borrow them...I can come over and give ya a hand....
HungusMaximist
27th November 2007, 23:28
Yea fuck I've done that before...
Get yourself a 30 bucks battery charger or even better, get yourself a battery optimiser.
I wouldn't recommend jump starting your bike with a car battery as most likely, it's gonna fry it. You can start your bike by chucking the jumper leads on your car battery with the car off but it's not gonna solve your flat battery problem compeletely as the battery could go flat as soon as you switch it off. The reason why is that the battery has gone flat and it might not hold the quick charge from the car battery (it depends on the battery quality) and you'll probably need to hook it up for a proper charge on a battery charger.
Done.

Well i started out sortof on the half way mark when i first got her, but found myself creeping back, and became more comfortable and in control as i did so. Found my foot at a horrible angle to get under the gear shift and never understood why, till i went for a long ride one day and arched my back a bit to stretch on the slow section nearing home and felt something vibrating touch my butt, turns out i was so far back i was touching the rail at the back of the pillion seat! so have adjusted the position of the gear shift since, and she's all good now. i dont sit RIGHT back usually, but i'd say 3/4 on the pillion. would explain why she's not so comfy if i'm on her for too long, gotta keep moving around on the seat.
I dont use the motorway, as i'm still limited to 70kph on the dirty ol' L-Plate, but i would 'imagine' i would do that at a hundred, not that i've ever been that fast on her ;) :D if i were to lean forward for streamlining whilst parked on the front seat my head would be in front of the gauges, not such a good place to be!

Find someone who has experience in pillioning. They will know how it feels to have someone on the back and be gentle on ya :) Perferably someone light. :yeah:
Have you been on the back before? It would give you an idea how to be gentle on the throttle and how not to scare the living daylights out of the pillion...

Very little too it but if you or others want to be shown how organise with Kitty to do a night.
I am quite happy to induct anyone* who wants to know into how, when, where, why, what etc. including how to be a pillion. Part of the whole to learn how to lead you must learn to follow.
Pillioning can be a lot of fun but it is an exercise in trust, confidence and communication.
*Provided they are legal to do so and the "steed" they wish to learn on is suitable.

Great work last night everyone!! AND awesome to see the westie ladies there...gasbagging on the sideline both Morcs and Disco! As for Disco being a distraction/hazard with me doing the slaylem and grabbin me rack...yea...took me by surprise!
If you guys think it gets too boring, voice ya opinions to me, drag me aside and tell me what's wrong or flick a pm my way, I keep an open mind, its always good to get feedback, so I can look at ways to improve...I just like to create a relaxed environment....cos we're bikers :2thumbsup I dont want people turning up thinking "oh no same old same old Im outa here"
If you find yourself in trouble, or stuck in the middle of nowhere needing assistance Im here! I say that cos Im studying and dont work, so home most days, if you need a pickup due to a bin call me...pm if you want my cell number. Chances are I'll turn up and say "yes the bike is rideable lol"
Ok this upcoming monday, if the weather is good we're going for a ride!! 3 lessons of cornering and emergency swerving is enough for now, as now you lot know what to practise in your spare time...circling and slaylem. It also will show you where you are at, and we can focus on those areas and improve those skills in the next lesson.
Awesome to see with that last circling exercise last night you guys started to push yourselfs....you're doing it at your pace...but safely...that's what I want to see.:wari:
Remember....develop your own riding style, no two riders are the same. What works for you on your bike may not work on someone elses bike.
Look at each bike like has its own special powers so to speak. Example -GN's - great for manouvering around cones with ease, where as sports bikes dont have a tighter turning lock but are better for cornering at speed. And respect the bike you are riding.
Relax - it means you are in control of the ride. If you find yourself tensing up, slow down, or try to get safely out of that mode. It can lead to panic, which can lead to binning it.
Enjoy it - because if you are not, what's the point in doing it. Sometimes we can have down days which is understandable, but if you lack confidence and want to work on it...take it slow. Small steps.
If anyone wants some one on one learning, pm me. If there is an area which you want to learn more about I'll try my best to help. If it's something which is not riding safely related, *coughs* stunting or stupid stuff....then yes we will do it away from monday nights. I would much rather be standing at the side of the road and help you pick up your bike, than have you stuck under it alone injured and unable to call for help.
We are all bikers, and there are times when we want to drop the safety guard and try different things to see what our bikes can and cant do.
Just bare in mind that Im not going to promote stupid riding lol

I've just been given the go ahead with hiring out the Mt Wellington go kart track!!!!
Here's the thing...
Firstly we have to make a donation to the go kart club, as they will be giving me a key, their fee to hire the track is $250 this will be discussed at the next meeting. There is an exception because we are a community organisation, and trying to help other riders, the go kart club supports this and said they will lower the fee to an acceptable donation from us as a group.
Remeber that this is still a voluntary thing and I intend to keep it that way, all proceeds which we raise as a group will go into the Go kart account for track hireage. The more riders we have, the less we can charge per person. I make nothing out of this personally, just to clarify things.
Secondly, THERE IS TO BE NO RACING!! under any circumstances. I can not stress this enough!! Yes we can go fast, but the environment will be controlled...the reasons why??
1 - No ambulance on site.
2 - There are noise restrictions and we have to respect others around us.
3 - I gave Ian my word we would not race therefore he agreed to this.
4 - Dont want to be picking up your binned bikes.
5 - We will loose the privledge of using the track.
6 - There are no avaliable marshals on set points/ corners on the track.
I have to write up a proposal for Ian and get back to him with it in regards to booking the track and what we will be doing on the track etc.
What I propose to you newbies is this...
First Monday of every month we hire out the track, if that's unavaliable, then try for the last Monday of every month.
So give it some thought, ideas, and/or ways to how we can raise money for an acceptable donation (some of us are poor students! *raises hand*) and see what we can come up with.

Sausage Sizzle?
I would be tempted to just get more newbies to join the ranks until it costs us about $10 each, i mean, you get to RIDE on a GO KART TRACK. I'm having trouble comprehending the epicness of this situation. defently worth $10.

i reckon chocolatewheels is on to it, if we can get a reasonable number of people (convince some of the west crew it's worth the ride or something?) we could scratch up a reasonable donation for a fairly low price per head. and for the chance to ride on the go kart track, who wouldn't manage to scratch up 10 or 20 bucks once a month? would have to make it a reasonable start time to make the most of it tho.
if it was sorted to be a definite date (e.g. first monday of every month) i'm sure more people from further afield would make a point of being there.

Yep I look back at some of the stupid shit I did when I was younger and think, thank got that was not dangerous... hell dangerous was not invented until the year I left school.
Since then every year the govt finds something else that is dangerous an legislates against it.
They kind of have a point though in this case.
I was doing 50-60 (passing cars in a 50) when I had my push bike accident.
If only I had of had the brains or the legislation to be wearing the helmet in my bag (still in it's box because I did not want to litter, litter bad, bicycles not dangerous yet so sayeth the govt) that I got for my birthday the day before.
As it was I was not so graced with brains or legislation so two things happened that July.
1. Bicycle helmets became compulsory ($50 fine).
2. I found out that because of the brain damage in that accident I am now epileptic and will need medication for the remainder of my life.
Never again will I be injured for want of gear that I own.

I came off my mountainbike on Dyers Pass Rd in Christchurch doing over 70. fortunately all I ended up with was a broken elbow and buckets of road rash.
Had I not been wearing the helmet I'd got that week I've always figured I'd be dead as I slammed head first into the curb. Nice L shaped dent in the helmet would have been in my head.
Wear the gear or be prepared to wear the risks I reckon.

Ah but in a way this is about bikes, because that is where I learned the lesson introducing the back of my head to a curb at an estimated 40-50kmph (thankfully a campervan slowed me down... not that I remember anything after passing a car outside the Rotorua Police station or before I woke up at home 10-12 hours later, despite being real talkative in between), As much and as good a gear as you can afford all the time, and NEVER suffer injury for the sake of gear you own but were not wearing.:2guns:

If anyone is lookin for someone to ride with around new years drop me a PM. i'm planning to be back in aucks by new years, and will be out on the highway if the weather is nice :2thumbsup

Hey Badger8, thought i'd find you on here somewhere, all i had to do was search for your bike.
Got some w+r on the blade and just got back from wanganui,
noels bike still don't go, much scratching of heads and nashing of teeth, might be duff ecm.
Anyway, see you at work if i don't see you before.
Think joy wanted to go for a ride somewhere, might be worth texting her.
Cheers.

We wont be going to our usual spot this coming Monday. We will be going to a carpark to practise some exercises which must be done in a controlled environment.
Because we are not doing the exercises on the road, this wont be going outside your licence restrictions (technicially)...how ever a carpark is classified as a public place with other vehicles, we must obey the rules etc no speeding (and the list goes on)....how ever please consider we do have to practise somewhere. And the skills I'll be teaching, you will all end up using these somewhere later down the track.
The exercises will be discussed on the night, anyone who is uncomfortable or feels they are not quite ready to give it a go I understand. Some of you have only had your bikes for a few weeks and are still getting the feel for it.
PM me if you want more details.. :bleh:
