Beehive exhaust spring tension

Does anyone have experience with installing“beehive” type springs like the ones used on high end race exhaust systems? I have done this beforebut I used fixed end springs which seemed to be prone to breaking.

I’m fabing the sping hooks/ mount for the pipes but before I weld the on I would like to get an idea of how much tension they should be under when fitted.

They springs I’m usind have a free length of 57mm eye to eye, do I mount the hooks 58mm apart for minimal cold tension or do they need to have more tension?

Any worthwhile comments will be appreciated and the most reasoned will be blinged, but if you have a clever smart arsed answer I might bling you for it….

Hey Sully. While I haven't had to put the hooks on to the pipes myself, I have owned a few systems which were held together by springs.

On my current Arrow system, there's probably about 20-30mm of stretch required, which takes a reasonable amount of muscle effort to get the spring in place.

I guess more tension won't really hurt (unless the springs break), but at the same time, lots of tension where the pipes don't make a good fit in the first place probably won't seal it very well. I'd not worry too much and just place the hooks based on 80% of how hard to can physiscally pull the spring.
