:ride: Went for a great ride today on all the back roads from Drury to Pukekohe, Waiuku, Awhitu and Manukau Heads. Best part was the road to Manukau Heads that threw up a few challenges to keep us on our toes: - getting over the brow of a hill to discover a dead possum slalem course (bless those drive by shootings). I enjoyed it so much I considered turning round and doing it again, but figured it wouldn't be as much fun without the element of surprise, and anyway I would be able to do it again on the way back. Sadly, however, someone had picked them all up by the time I was heading home. But that's ok cos there was always the fun of the camber being wrong on so many of the bends, and the calves that escaped from their field and ran out in front of me resulting in a great stoppie. To top it off my riding buddy decided we should go all the way up to the satellite station which involves riding up a potholed, gravel track. I'm still pretty nervous about gravel after I had an altercation with some a few months back resulting in a broken rib, but fortunately I made it without giving my bike a chance to have a wee rest on its side!
Anyway, it was such a great ride I might have to do it all again tomorrow. If you haven't done this ride yet I thoroughly recommend it, and there's plenty of great bendy bits where you can get your knee down.

Specially when your going around a nice tight corner close to the ground and you get a really good wif of it.... :sick:Yeah, but that's more than compensated for by the other sensational moments: the aroma of honeysuckle flowers on a brilliant summer day; riding through a cool pool of air in the shade when it's hot out; riding with the sun on your back when it's cool; the feel of the front wheel in the air when you power out of a corner *; the feel of the back end sliding out under power without any any heart-stopping drama*.

* Two thrills you'll experience when you get your SP.:headbang:

It's amazing how much more interest you take in road kill when you're out on your bike...

Tis fun on those backroads hah? Glad you hadenjoyed it. Try and remember to give the bike a good going over after the run as things tend to fall off bikes on rougher roads more easily-you know the odd critical component mounting bolt ;) Btw those possums could be playing possum and moved all by themselves

The road out to Awhitu is an awesome place to ride. I try and go out there once a month to get in some good corner practice. We went up to the lookout a couple of week ago. Love that gravel (not!). Fencing must be a slightly dodgy out that way coz I had a couple of sheep run out in front of me on the way back. Was an interesting braking moment for the KR and me to say the least! But on the plus side I got my toe down for the first time which gave me such a fright I nearly stuffed up the corner!

There also a nice regional park just out of Matakana (on the way out) which has picnic tables, BBQ etc. Good place to take a packed lunch and chill.

Yeah I scraped my pegs at one stage, cresting a hill to discover that it immediately gave way to a very sharp right hander. Yeehaa :2thumbsup

You need to take a packed lunch out that way cos there's nowhere to grab lunch, except the bird place but that's only open on weekends. Had to wait until got back to Waiuku before I could satisfy my raging hunger.

Just don't try to cook them first. Years ago on my parents' farm in Pahiatua I came into the kitchen one day to find my dad boiling up possum on the stove for the dogs. The smell was indescribable. But let me try.
Nauseating, horrendous, abominable instantupchuckableness...
You get the idea.

And this was fresh possum...

I think it might be open weekdays during the summer. I had a very enjoyable lunch there once - seem to recall it was a weekday but may be mistaken.

Anyway it's a great ride - just beware of the wind.

I take it he was boiling them whole in the true traditions of man-cooking??

Best to be avoided at all times
A long time ago on a different bike I run overone of those natures speed bumps  Couldn't miss it right on my line. Not a problem until I slowed to turn a corner and then the road felt like it had turned to deep sand :angry2: How I stayed on I don't know. But ythat little speed bump had left a 5mm hole in my tube. 5km to push the bike meant I was late for work. Luckily the garage where I worked was able to fix it for me so I could get home.

Now I avoid all suck speed bumps at any cost.
