Gidday guys,
Just thought I'd blow my own trumpet for a minute and announce that I've just completed my 3 year Degree in ICT at CPIT - majored in E-commerce and <acronym title="Think project management, but for system development">information systems</acronym>. Haven't graduated yet, but the marks are in and I'm no longer a student.
So, I will be hunting for a <acronym title="I learn quickly and have a PHP programming background">web development type job</acronym> in December/January and I'll have a portfolio/CV whipped up once I've knocked off a few outstanding projects. If anyone's got any words of advice for a noob like me I'd love to hear them - I've heard that the job market is pretty cut-throat ATM ;s. It would totally own if I could find a job in CHCH with some KiwiBikers.

BTW: Hopefully I'll soon be able to afford that Bike I'm always going on about not owning.
Cheers,
Romeo

Congrats to you! Nothing wrong with blowing your own trumpet when you've been slaving away and achieved something. Good luck on the job hunt.
Remember, door knocking is a million times more valuable than sending your CV in. I've found great jobs just by having a chat with the boss, even when they had nothing going right then. It's a chance to make a good impression and if you come across as interested in the company and what they do, not just what you can get out of them, you're ahead of the pack already.
Fingers crossed, if you get out there and hit the pavement I'm sure you'll do well.

There are jobs galore in that field in Christchurch.
What database experience do you have? What languages are you proficient in? Any web services skills?

Thanks for the kind words guys, I've actually already had a few mates say "Hey, come work at our company, the boss would *love* you!" - so I think that's a good start!

DB experience, <a href="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b383/RomeoEskobar/Services.jpg">here's my latest ERD</a>. It's not how I would normally design it, but I had to conform to CakePHP standards. So the naming convention is rather criptic. Also, the normalisation and denormalisation is all over the place. I had to chop and change in certain areas to best suit performance for my application (complex business rules made it so much harder!).
Web services such as AJAX -> RPC? Not yet, but I've done quite a bit of OO PHP and a few CakePHP projects. I'm also pretty good with XHTML + CSS + graphics design in general. Done ActionScript and XML courses also, so I'm all up to speed with most of the core web technologies.
However, the majority of the Degree was based around management of system development. It's all a bit dry, so I wont go into it ;P.
I'm not perfect, but I can and want to learn!
I have a proven ability to absorb knowledge quickly and to manage projects autonomously in a risk-averse and quality assured manner.

I was thinking more along the lines of practical skills. How's your SQL? What did you do for your final project? What mark did you get? Did you pass the degree with distinction? How would you rate your knowledge of oo?

so a man can now be judged by his SQL? .. coolness !!! :D
MySQL question:
how does one go about generating a query where there is a need to right join the table on itself ?
once you have the correct data set how does one use that data set to delet from the table all the returned results.
This is what I did for work today :)

Well the answer is bloody obvious... very carefully...
But something I'll seriously look into tomorrow when I'm not knackered from work, beginning to miss doing IT stuff.

About time!
No more going to gatherings in a car :P
Might have a hard time keeping up with some of the locals though, with them hitting 200kmph even on the cruisey wensday rides! :eek5:
Let me know how you get on picking out a bike, and I'll be happy to cruise along a few times while you learn.

Ahh yes, forgot about this thread, have been meaning to reply...

cos if it were me.. i'd be telling you to go fornicate somewhere else right now.Yes, but you're a homo, so that doesn't surprise me :girlfight:
I've been in his exact position, which is why I know exactly what questions to ask... even you must've been quick enough to notice that they were quite specific questions...
congratulations on ya degree.. sign up with some recruitment agenciesFortunately you're not a totally useless homo, this is actually good advice
I would start with Michelle Berry from Manpower, she's quite helpful, although being a fresh graduate you'll want an edge.
Feel free to talk to me at the next cruisy wed night ride if you like... if I'd put two and two together I'd have talked to you last night.
