My bike failed it's warrant for not having a windscreen (which I don't understand considering there are so many naked bikes around...) and sure enough the dude on trademe that I always saw had cheap windscreens has disappeared. Where can I get a windscreen from for cheap?

Try www.atomicbikes.co.nz Bike Wreckers in Auckland or you might have to bite the bullet and talk to the guys at www.justfairings.co.nz. Im sure they do windscreens too. Last hope will be someone on the site has one sitting around.......

Tell me, did you go to a VTNZ for the warrant, or some other motorcycle shop we should all avoid?
Failing a warrant for no windscreen. I hope someone fills the tester's butt crack with putty.

Well my bike failed for numerous reasons, most of which have been fixed (brakelight bulb, loose footpeg, rear tyre, etc.) but on the warrant sheet it does say it needs to be sorted to pass.
I don't want to cause a big deal about the tester as I know them. I'll talk to them tonight about it, pretty sure it's best to be anal rather than getting a cop coming round saying they're passing bikes in substandard condition. It wasn't VTNZ, though I haven't had any bad experiences there myself. They even fixed my headlights so they'd pass last time I went
Edit: Godiva want $150 for a plain clear standard screen. Fark that, not when I'm only going to break it again. And for another 20 bucks I could get an iridium double bubble from England

It's not in a substandard condition. You can remove all the fairings, make sure you have brake lights, indicators, taillight, headlights, and reflector all functioning and adjusted correctly and get a warrant on ANY old piece of munt. The windscreen is just a piece of plastic that has NO effect on the performance or safety of the motorcycle at legal speeds. There is no legal requirement for a motorcycle to have a windscreen.
I'd really like to avoid the shop you went to.

Tell us who it was and what the name of the tester was, so we can ring em up and ask foolish and deliberately time-wasting questions about windscreens! Fun for the afternoon!

I was thinking I should just take the front fairing off and zip tie the indicators to the mirror mounts. No windscreen needed since it's now naked :p
I work at this particular shop and I don't want to undermine them and they're generally pretty good. Chances are I can say what you have above and pass (once I've got the new tyre done).

You could always try making one (Depending on how complicated the blade is). My brother made his out of perspects for about $13. Just heat in your oven till it gets soft then get it to form the shape you want.

Never had great experiances at the shop i think you may be talking about, but thats just speculation.
I went to VTNZ to get a WOF on behalf and there was a grey are Thing that popped up and the guy was not afraid to go and get the answer by the book. consequently the bike passed. Fixing the bit that wasn't quite right anyway....

yeah the screen guy on tardme got banned.
You could try ebay.
But I have one in the shed, chrislost has got dibs on it, but if you bid more than $30... its a standard clear nc30 screen.

Bugger. Know if he still deals in them somewhere?
I'll let him have it, unless you'll sell it for $30.50?

Had thought of that after seeing RG100 doing it. He had a mould that the perspex bended over. The original shape is easy enough, but it's just extra time, the bike is currently running on no wof or rego and the cops around here are anal so I'd like to get a screen soon rather than fluffing around making one.
However, it's a future project. Wouldn't mind having a double bubble screen. Where do you get iridium plastic stuff (is it a coating or what?)?

That's the plan, just need to figure out a way of mounting the indicators without failing for them
