Secret evidence in a 156-page police affidavit used to carry out raids on Maori and other activists last month has been posted on a United States-based website.

The version of the affidavit on the website is taken from a photo-copy, which has hand-written legal notes in the margins and marked references to Jamie Lockett throughout the document.

Lockett is one of the 16 defendants facing firearms charges as a result of the raids on October 15.

Lockett's lawyer, Jeremy Bioletti, this month filed a complaint to the Solicitor-General against The Dominion Post and other Fairfax Media publications for publishing contents of the affidavit filed at Manukau District Court on October 10 to obtain a search warrant for the raids.

Following the publication, Mr Bioletti said he expected The Dominion Post publisher, editor and the reporter involved, Phil Kitchin, would stand trial for contempt of court.

When contacted by NZPA today, Mr Bioletti was surprised to learn about the internet posting of the affidavit.

He declined to comment until seeing the website, which is under the name of a New Zealand organisation but appears to be hosted from Missouri.

Last week Solicitor-General David Collins wrote to Fairfax Media newspapers and the Stuff website, seeking their explanation for publishing information from the leaked affidavit.

Dominion Post editor Tim Pankhurst said today the Solicitor-General had given the newspaper until Friday to respond, and it was still preparing that response. He declined further comment.

Police launched an inquiry into how the information was leaked, initially to TV3, and whether any laws were broken. The inquiry was widened to include Fairfax outlets after they published excerpts from the affidavit.

The Dominion Post ran an editorial saying it believed it was acting within the law and in the public interest.

Someone find it and link it!

Would that not mean that spank would be in breach of the suppression order?

Not posting the affidavit - just the link.... ?

Is that not the same? Don't get me wrong. I would love to read it. Just not sure on the rules/laws.

Stuff has it wrong again, it's only 155 pages, not 156. Can't post links, that would be naughty, and maybe illegal. And responsible people would not want to view matter that they were not supposed to. Except Mr Finn, he's not a proper person (about half a person, I guess). See his post this morning. He who runes may read (I've wanted to get that pun in for so long - for once the ubiquitous error is correct).

I've been advised that it's extremely boring reading... being a detective must suck. All that cellphone text message cross-checking, and bank account cross checking, and telephone number cross checking....

My view is: "Terrorists" may be a long bow, but just maybe the coppers did some good getting some guns and nutters off the street, even if they executed the grab in a somewhat ham-fisted manner :) Someone might have to solve the Tuhoe problem at some stage, though. Like in a way that doesn't limit the range of solutions to violence.

Sits back and waits...

Well, I suppose that's as (in)sane a response I'll get from someone who quotes the Turner Diaries in their sig... Best to steer clear of the politics and stick to bikes, I reckon

The Marauder's gotta be the best mid-size cruiser the world has ever seen, eh?

What a bunch of amateurs! They won't be making those noob terrorist mistakes again.
How unfortunate it was released to the general public, it's basically a manual for how not to do it.

They need to use cell-structure organisations, encrypted communications, and dedicated anonymous cellphones. Not to mention a basic course in anti-surveillance. Even reading a Tom Clancy or Ludlum novel would have improved their organisation!

Amateurs.

I said before on the other thread, but I'll say it again. It's bloody amusing that Tame Iti et al conducted all their communications in English, when their first act on being arrested is to demand a Maori translator.

I guess you didn't actually read the transcripts then? Quite a few were in Maori and had the English translations alongside them.

Well, that was predictable. Thank goodness the supporters of law and order , and all right thinking folk are on the job.

I just hope that (being as it was a pdf) no depraved person was wicked enough to save it to his local hard drive, for further dissemination;)

I know ... saving a copy of NZPOLICEaffidavit.pdf (4,936,817 bytes) would be bad indeed. I sincerely hope no-one's done it.
