Overheard in the court building today, while I was in getting a distress warrant on the crook who ripped me, plus a heap of old ladies (still in bizzo).

Young girl ?16ish to court clerk - "Look I reeeeeeeeeaally can't afford to pay these fines, I reeeeeally don't have any money because I don't have annnnnny income, so I want to get all these fines I've got all wiped by doing some community service instead. Because there's nooooo chance I can pay them. Would that be alright with you? (greasy grin).

Clerk (with prominent sign behind her saying; do the crime - pay the fine)
"Well it's not like you can just change the sentence the Court gave you, it's not something I can do."

Girl - more pleading and smiles. Clerk says "just a minute" and scuttles off out of sight. Clerk returns "You can't do the community work but you can write an essay instead. It has to be about the effects crime has on it's victims".

Girl - sigh, looking deflated "Oh OK, can I have a pen, I'll just do it now quickly
for you".

Clerk - "it will take you longer than you have - we close soon, the essay has to be 8 pages long you see"

Girl - snuffles, no longer smiling "Ohhh 8 pages" - turns tail and struts out.
Could there be a reason people hold the Courts in contempt? Soft as cheese.

I got done (about four days after the fact) for doing the 1000 lines I'd been set as a punishment on a computer. This was long before teachers knew what cut'n'paste was. He only found out when he asked the IT donk how long it would have taken to do.

Gee ... so - why don't the Police follow suit? "Cops" I believe is a word they use. I don't recall them referring to themselves as Pigs. Open to correction on that one though
