Hi there,

A quick question for y'all, who here owns a sports bike as a daily commuter and alternatively who here owns it as a weekend warrior or track tool? Also if you could state the pro's and con's of your answer it would be great.

Finally, by sports bike I mean that in the vein of Ducati XXXX, GSX-R XXXX, CBRXXXXRR, ZX-XXXXR or the YZF-RXXXX's (XXXX denoting number).

Cheers,

Lance

I believe that that's a commute if you refer to the Oxford english dictionary........now if you played a game of rugby or did a 100m sprint on your bike, it may fall in to the category of the above mentioned bikes.

my GSX-R 600 use to be my daily communter, to work and back, also used for weekend fun.

More round town wear & tear on bike, my is a short communte but longer communtes you might square tires up.
Good thing is no has many issues with traffic.

My bike is more setup for weekend fun, since round down is just that and normal 50-60km sorta thing so i live with it being hard suspenion etc etc

I use my blade for commuting AND weekend plaything.

Pros: only one bike to worry about
Cons: only one bike....

I dont commute on it because I am part of a car pool - being a shift worker has its benefits as I dont have to wait till the weekend to ride.

Pro's - awesome all round bike, suits my touring needs
Con's - I make it look small

I use my RSV1000 for commuting as well as sport-riding. Not sure what you're asking for tho? Maybe you could tell us the reason for the question and then I might know how to answer?

I'm offended, Sir! :Pokey:
I consider the (almost)mighty VFRXXX to be a sprotsbike. I certainly use it for the most engaging sprot of KaosKommuntering.
(One has to be actively engaged in this sport to participate, else one is quickly eliminated or disqualified.)

On the other hand, it could be considered to be a communter bike, seeing one commutes on it.
Or a tourer, seeing as it has toured some of the highways and bighways of these fair(ly weather-struck) isles.

And I guess even though Freddie Spencer (http://www.fastfreddie.com/html/aboutFreddie.htm) rides a VFRXXX, and it's sporty enough for him, it's not for you?

I like the idea of a sports bike but I think that for my situation (daily commuter, weekend rides to country pubs and no real aspirations of track work yet) I think that a sports bike might not be for me but who knows. Also, I don't think that my skill set is at a level where a sports bike is a safe option.

How long have you been riding for?

Do you want to ride fast?

Do you want to look cool?

I ride about 20kms to work on my RSV. Its not that much fun in the 50km/h stuff, but I love the half of the journey where I do 100km/h. Its enough to float my boat until the weekend/night rides.

Oops - sorry, I forgot this part.
The 'pro' of my answer would be that my answer was good for making you (and possibly others) aware that the (almost)mighty VFRXXX can be considered a sprotsbike. Another 'pro' might be that it might educate people about the illustrious history of the VFR, and the Great Freddie Spencer.
Even though he's Mrkn.

A 'con' might be that the VFRXXX could become popular due to its great all-rounder quality, and then the prices would go higher than they already are.
Although that could also be regarded as a 'pro', because when I'm forced to sell it, I won't lose so much money. Another 'con' is my answer was poorly worded and formatted given I'm a professional browser of the Interdweeb SLASH writer.
Yet another 'con' is that my answer wasn't humorous, smutty, rude or insulting, so I won't get any rep points for it. But that's OK, because even though I keep giving them away, strewing them about like confetti, they keep multiplying. I think the little fuckers are breeding. :blank:

Your tinted visor isn't dark enough. It'd be more betterer if it was mirror-plated as well, or you wore dark glasses under the neath.

I like to ride my VFRXXX at moderate speed pretending I'm on a black GSXRRRRR, riding through heavy traffic at high speed on one wheel, crossed-up, with smoke pouring off the wildly-spinning back tyre, while I'm sitting on the handlebars, wearing a beanie, board shorts, jandals and a wife-beater.:headbang::Punk:

Hi. My name's Blue Velvet and I like phat sprotsbikes.

I own a '99 SV650S and a K7 GSX-R750.

I (generally) commute to work on the SV because even though I have secure undercover parking at work, I don't feel comfortable leaving the 750 there at times (dodgy workmates). If I lived further away I'd probably just ride the 750. I recently moved closer to work (though it was not my reason for moving).

I ride the 750 just about everywhere else - long distance, weekend, night time rides, etc.

I plan to take the SV to the track after a bit of TLC as I've never been before and the thought of binning the SV doesn't hurt as much. Then I'll start taking the 750.

I find the 750 fits me very well, more so than the SV. I tuck into it like a glove. I would ride it everywhere if I didn't have the SV. The 750 is a nicer ride...

The handlebars are in the wrong place. The only VFRs that were proper sports bikes were either 400cc or was also known as the RC30.
I like the idea of a sports bike but I think that for my situation (daily commuter, weekend rides to country pubs and no real aspirations of track work yet) I think that a sports bike might not be for me but who knows. Also, I don't think that my skill set is at a level where a sports bike is a safe option.A 4 cylinder 600cc bike will be fine, you'll be able to handle it. In reality very few of them are raced so they are actually designed for humans to ride to work on and go for a bit of holiday on. If they were really race bikes like the manufacturers make out, there would be no pillion seat or pegs, lights and stuff would be an option, the suspension would be much firmer and they'd come with super soft tyres out of the box.

Go ride one. You've got nothing to loose. See if you can ride one for most of a day. The biggest 'I see the difference' moment will be when you get back on your Monster.

it all depends

i found my CBR quite hard to use hard on the road, it felt kinda...wrong.
i know someone who rides a K7 GSXR 1000, when riding with me he envies my bike through the twisties because its so easy to ride, and slightly faster, and he aint no n00b.

I have the perfect compromise. The 00&01 CBR600's were the last of the comfortable CBR's as the next model was the RR with clipons and all that silly stuff :)

So my bike is a little more upright than those, has a comfortable riding position, is a great tourer and for me, the perfect bike. I love the sports features as I love swooping in low through corners. Touching a boot or a peg and feeling the lean is not something I could get from a sports/tourer I don't think.

No, it's not a big bike, which is great. I find I don't even have to think about things like gripping with ma knees, as I just kinda slot into the bike, whereas on the SV I have to remind myself.

So the GSX-R is very good for smaller people I guess, judging from what jrandom says about being uncomfy on it. But then he could just harden the eff up, as cowpoos suggests :bleh:

I have a company vehicle so drive to work each day, but in saying that have ridden 3 days this week as the days are awesome at the moment.
My bikes are for recreation and weekend riding plus occasional afterwork blasts.
I've been finding my Ducati hard on the body, crouch style, in longer rides so have brought another Speed Triple which will do for longer rides and cruisy fun, and will save the Duc for short more thrash stuff hopefully.
So have the best of both worlds I reckon.

But I dont have an inner city commute like some, as I live 25km from town. I could'nt imagine commuting inner city on my Duc.
Hell, just thinking about driving in Auckland gives me the shits!

Considering that there are four Xs in the OP it might be considered out of place to mention the ZXR250...

But yeah, I commute on it whenever the weather is sorta decent (e.g. it's not pouring down) and I also take it out on longer trips on the weekends.
Living on the hill in Chch I've started getting into a habit of commuting along the summit road - so much more fun than having to suffer the dreary commute through heavyish traffic on the flat.

As for the purpose of sportsbikes - you buy one, you decide. Some do stunting, some goes fast on them, some turns fast on them, some bins them... I'm just having fun! :)

So I'm nice to it and currently I use a bicycle as my daily weapon

Except when you loose 2 spark plugs, and the remaining ones are only 90 degrees apart.......like riding a bike with square wheels.
But yes the FZ is easy to ride, except when you forget how much it weighs.
The motor makes the whole bike very deceptive, when the power goes, momentum takes over (like corners)......my balls get very small.

If I see fog, grey mist, snow or any of those other nasties,
Then its the old faitfull utes turn to brave the road.
When leaving my gate, I have 300meters to travel to warm the bike up,
A quick left right, cross SH 1 head south and its 100KPH limit for the next 30ks.
Now, after a day of watching the Grape vines grow, basking in the sun, or freezing in the rain.......
It a 300meter warm up along the Vineyard access road to warm the bike up,
A right turn to head north towards home, SH 1 and 100kph limit for 30k's till I brake for the little pathway to my home.

Hi, this site is all about sportbikes, REAL SPORTBIKES. This site is awesome. ....

That's REAL ULTIMATE SPROTBIKES !

OMFG Sprotbikes are soooo cool! And by cool I mean TOTALLY sweet.

oops, I got a bit carried away there. Definately weekend warrior + trackday tool. Constantly feathering the clutch in 1st gear isn't a particularly fun way of riding a thou methinks. Also, you can't load it up with tools and PCs. However when the weather is fine I do take it to work occasionally.

Yes. Way cooler than pirates.

I will go now, and make my sprotbike wail on its guitar on a hilltop.

Sprotbikes are fast, smooth, cool, strong, powerful, and sweet. I can't wait to start racing next year. I love sprotbikes with all of my body (including my pee pee).

The bars are soooooo wide (compared to my CBR) that corner carving is almost effortless with counter-steering being a little push on the bars. Weird feeling not having to move the body much going through corners though.

I think a GSX1400 will be my next test ride, you know.

Try a CB1300, one in at ANZA motorcycles in Palmerston Nth brand new $13,500(or there abouts)+ORC. IT's the version with the fairing too.

I've used every bike I've had to commute on, most of them sports bikes, and it's fine. The wear and tear issue is a mute point I think, I cant speak for the Italian bikes with dry clutches and stuff, but any Jap bike will take it in stride. It comes down to what bike you really like, and can feel comfortable on. If it fits those criteria just buy it FFS.

The "What should I buy?" threads are a tad pointless I've always thought, but I suppose they do provide some new ideas to consider.

This is a sports Tourer, as opposed to the ZX10 we had which was termed a hypersports bike.
Neither are much good around town 50ks etc, mind you we are tuttoo's (spl) with our bikes which changes the way the engine behaves. The 14 was purpose bought for my regular 400k commutes Tauranga to Whangarei, and is perfect for it. Other than that it gets used for sports bike riding around Coro etc, and although its a big bike its a lot of fun in the tight stuff.
The ZX10 was like riding a bike on P. Mind you had $$1,000s of mods done to it poor thing, but could also commute long distance just not as comfortable as the 14. I had an RSV-R Factory, and also commuted on that but found it too uncomfortable long distance and was more designed for the fun stuff, was OK around town and could do town commuting on it OK. The SV1000 (also another bike I owned for a while) was great in all riding situations. Long commutes, short tight twisties, track, town, an excellent all round sports bike.
Summary
Depends on which sports bike you buy. Some will fit the general bill better than others. After test owning several (oh I had a Ducati 900ss as well, and a TL1000s, all these bikes in the past two years so is recent stuff) I have happily settled for the ZX14 for my particular purpose of current riding. Ive finally come to a point that I have no idea what would ever replace the 14, so hopefully I will happily sit on this one for some time.
Interested to hear what you decide will be best for you. They are all different.

WHY commute on a bike? They are TOYS. Use the fucking cage to go to work in, thats why u r going to work aren't you....to have no fun and not play with your toys. Use the bike for FUN only, all days you can ....except when its wet.
Fuck the cars.

Commuting in a cage would depress the hell out of me before I even got to work. After riding to work I feel less like killing the people I work with, so it's a healthy choice I feel

Hasn't this thread died a natural death yet? Any bike is for riding. All the bikes I've had the pleasure of owning have been used as everyday transport, even my old RD.

Of course they're pointless, but it's mental masturbation, innit. Lots of shiny motorcycles, which one do you like, oh my! Et cetera. All good fun when yer bored.

Beats the hell out of snide bitchfests about who was doing what on a public road.

A sprotsbike's purpose is to put a smile on yer face, innit?
How ya choose to use it & get that smile is usually by riding it on some wicked windy roads, with the odd big looong straigh bits thrown into the mix :2thumbsup
