View Full Version : Canterbury: Rider Training Weekend - ChCh!
MyGSXF
30th November 2007, 13:44
Ok.. as a follow on to my post in the "Cruisy Night Rides" thread..
I have spoken with Andrew @ Roadsafe.. & he is very keen to come to ChCh & do a training weekend for you guys!! (only, I gotta organise it all.. )
It will be a "Roadsafe" training weekend (so nothing to do with MCC). And it WILL be the best investment you could possibly spend your money on with regards to your motorcycling, that I guarantee!! :first: (As Transalper kindly pointed out, I am hooked on these courses & recommend 100% EVERYONE doing at least one in their lifetime.. no matter how many years you have been riding.. or how much experience & knowledge you think you have!!!! :msn-wink: )
Firstly I need to get an idea of numbers definately interested, & then will let you know all the details as it all unfolds! :niceone:
What I can tell you thus far.. is it will cost in the vacinity of $190.00 & for that you will get 2 full days of intensive training 9am-4/5pm ish, & like I said.. it will be the BEST investment you will make for yourself.. for your life & your riding!! :first:
Will look at having it at somewhere like Wigram.. or if anyone else knows of a large carpark area that would be suitable & totally empty & unused for a whole weekend.. PLEASE let me know!!!!!!!!! :niceone: Thanks.
Let me know if ya keen!! :2thumbsup
Bout it for now... will keep ya posted! :Punk:

I would be interested depending on the weekend chosen. As an semi regular Wednesday night rider i would recommend that those newer riders try to get the money together and give this a go. I've been riding 31 continuous years now (mostly like a nana - following Dangerous a couple of weeks ago was a revelation) and want to prove you can teach an old dog some new tricks.

I'm up for it so long as it isn't a long weekend and hopefully don't clash with other adventure trips. Guess if there's a choice to be made rider training should take priority.
However ANZAC weekend is definately no good for me as the Capital Coast Adventure only happens once a year.
Rallys happen all the time, there's always another in a week or two during summer (not that i do many of them any more anyway).

Here's a taste of what should be covered in the weekend...
*emergency braking
*cornering skills
*obstacle avoidance and counter steering
*slow speed control
*increasing your confidence
*having fun whilst learning these essential riding skills
& here's a link to one of the advanced days I did a while ago..

do ya need a road legal bike for these events?
Subike
30th November 2007, 16:13
Is this event going to be on a closed circuit, and if it is then can you bring a bike for training on that you are not licenced to ride on the road (yet)
As I see this as a good thing to get rider training on my XSessive, I am sure that I would learn a seriously vast amount of things from one of these events.

I have phoned Ngai Tahu re: Wigram.. also the Addington Raceway.. & the A & P Showground managers to suss out a suitable venue. If anyone else can think of an area we can use please let me know!! (please supply a phone number also if possible!!!!) It needs to be a big sealed area.. NO other traffic, & also needs to have a room available for the classwork & dvd watching etc.. & also so we can have a cuppa etc for lunch! :2thumbsup

Hi guys..
Tis time to get back on track with this, now that the silly season has settled..
Had a big natter with Andrew this morning & the whole idea is still very much a go ahead plan for both of us! :Punk:
At this point in time, we would be looking to hold the weekend around the end of March. Does anyone have an idea of when the rallies/events are on towards the end of March.. coz we don't want to clash with anything!! (what's that website with all the rallies listed???)
The format would be: beginner/intermediate on the Sat.. following with the intermediate/advanced on the Sun. :scooter:
I'm onto ACC to hopefuly get involved also! As they are with the Nelson rider training weekends! :niceone:
Am still working on finding a suitable venue, if anyone has any brilliant ideas... (anyone work in factory with decent sized tar sealed grounds & a staff room??? )
Bout it for now I think.... stay tuned.. ;)

Can't think of a suitable venue either, sorry, but I will ask around. Will you please post something to let us know what the difference is between beginners and advanced training when you have time. I'm guessing that I'm advanced, although after a year I'm still very much a beginner ...
Thanks ~ K :)

Something will "give" eventually Ryan.. take time out for yourself.. go for a walk on the beach, or in the bush.. or something else you enjoy, that will help you to relax & unwind. I'd be really keen for this too, I did something similar in Auckland in the early nineties (93 to be exact) on my old RZ250, advanced rider training it was called, had the whole day at Pukekohe and covered all these sorts of things. Pity Ruapuna can't be used, as it was great having all that space for emergency braking from 100km/hr.
Actually the course back then was a second day riding around Aucklands various traffic conditions, subrubs, motorway, city, country...hmm...definitly in need of a refresher me thinks.
Nice work on the organisation by the way MyGSXF!! That's real comitment to follow it all the way through.

GL with wooing ACC - they've been winging about payouts and the problems with riders going through the license scheme with not enough experience/training recently (hence the law changes), so should be aligned pretty well with their current position.

I did the Mainland Driving School riding course late last year here in Christchurch, it was organised by Hog. I have also done an advanced riding course in Wellington but it was years ago. Why do you want to know?

Ok guys & girls..
Tis finally finalised!
The 24 & 25th May is confirmed!! :Punk:
The course will run on Sat & Sun from 9-4ish & will cost $200.00 for the whole weekend!!! :sunny:
Will be held at Hillmorton High School, Upland Road. (off Hoon Hay Rd) :scooter:
To confirm your place you will need to be booked & paid for in full, by the Sunday before (18th) :niceone: Numbers will need to be limited due to space.. so will be first in (paid) first served!!! :first:
All participants will need to have a motorcycle license!!
I will send out a pm in the next couple of days, to everyone who's names I have on my list, with banking details, venue, etc etc. In the meantime, have a think about the 3 main things you want to develop over the weekend!! :wait:
Jen
Thanks for doing the work for this J:2thumbsup
I'm working that weekend & so unless I can find a replacement I probably will have to pass on what will be a good weekend.

Phwoar, wee bit short notice, but I'm sure I can rustle up $200 for something this important... pretty sure I get paid between now and then, but money is tight since I've just bought a house! Anyway, when you send out the PM, please include all relevant details such as the timetable, names of trainers and what their experience is, and a bit of a briefing about what will be coached (generally) on each day. It's quite close to my new house actually, which will be handy. Should hopefully see you there :niceone:

Oh now, come on, Post #1 dated 30th November 2007 states...cost in the vacinity of $190.00.
So there's been plenty of time to save ;).
I'm ready, just waiting for the banking/registration details.

Did you just buy your first house, after five years of a booming market, and with interest rates as high as they are, hmm? Yes, notice was given, but confirmation only just coming now, with 12 days before the money cutoff, when I've just gone and done the above, is tough. But rather than just saying I can't afford it, I will find the money somewhere.

Now no body forced you to go buying houses now did they, no, you didn't have to do that, I will not accept that as an excuse, and you could always quick sell the house to get the money. It's all about priorietys they say.
Now look what you've done, were are going to get in to trouble now, you'll see, need to find a way to get back on topic quick before anyone notices!
Good luck with the fundraising, hope to see ya there.

That far??! 10 minutes from Hornby, say 15 minutes total from Hillmorton High? But what ever :) If you'd prefer to do something at your's that's fine  I just thought it was a good opportunity for a bit of a KB get together... Cheers.

The BBQ idea is a good one. I however have my own personal reservations about leaving the city proper - I don't touch alcohol if I'm going onto the open road.
And honestly - a BBQ without a couple of beers is just WRONG!
And while Rolleston may be only 10 mins from the Hornby - it's 10 minutes in the wrong direction so to speak  Not to say I wouldn't ride to Rolleston for a social event - but I'd rather stay in town to be honest.

Not so much that I'd prefer to use my place as such; I just thought that generally KBers might have more reservations about travelling that far (pulling ya leg :bleh:), as Mikkel quips, in the wrong direction. I'm happy to head out to Rolleston m'self, gives me a chance to open the taps on the Kwaka a bit... and I'm sure you'll put on a good venue too.
Shall we see what the general consensus is, overall? My place or yours? Actually feel a bit bad for bringing it up - was your idea in the first place, makes it look like I'm stealing your thunder, which was not my intention :(

Know what you mean... BBQ without beer is definitely leaning on the wrong side of halfway! Either way beer will be on offer, mine or timg's place... but from a legal point of view Mikkel, you'd be over the limit if you had a beer at either venue, open road, schmopen road! :nya:
Did I just say 'schmopen'?
Anyone else got a view on where they'd want to go? I'm sure timg's place is nicer than mine, being my first house an' all, though it's by no means a shack, I think it's quite good for a first house. Loads of off street parking, nice quiet neighborhood, generous garage to put the bikes in if it's raining, BBQ area and so on.

Trust me, I won't be near the limit from neither one nor two beers... The 0.08% blood alcohol limit in NZ is VERY generous - weighing in at ~90 kgs I could most likely drink a bottle of red wine and be legal to drive inside 2 hours.
I limit myself to two beers when riding because I know the effect will be negible. But I do have a no beers at all on open roads or group rides.
And if you're refering to special limits for non-full licensees, I have to let you know that if you're past 25 (or is it indeed 20 or 21?) then that doesn't matter.

Sorry timg! But sounds like we'll be firing up the BBQ at mine after the course on the Saturday afternoon - weather permitting naturally, if it's pissing down I doubt anyone will be keen! As with your suggestion though it'll be BYO meat and beverages, and if you feel the need to have some rabbit food (salad)... a) what kind of a man do you call yourself?! :bleh: and b) if you want it, feel free to bring it along. By taking option b) you acknowledge and accept that you will be hassled mercilessly...

See you all tomorrow! Or today, as the case may be...

About fecken time! I'd be really embarrised to turn up without them today... after so many wet Wednesdays and me saying "I cant believe you guys come out with rain forcast and no wets" and then getting wet.

Great weekend guys - cheers!
Thanks for having us Ryan, nice house mate :niceone:
You're welcome, it was fun :) Quite possibly a much nicer place in warmer weather and better daylight, but as far as a first house is concerned, I'm pretty happy with it generally speaking. Got pretty smoky in the conservatory with the BBQ going, but with the weather not playing ball, it being dark and us not having outside lighting set up yet, we couldn't very well use the BBQ area. Still, come next daylight savings... ;)
Good weekend overall. The training was good - frustrating at times - but good. Quite an eye opener how hard you could brake and not lock the front wheel, even with all that standing water. If you'd asked me to begin with I wouldn't have said I could have braked half as hard as what I did. I think it'll help the way I feel about riding on a wet surface - not pushing it, but perhaps less tentative.

Same with the low speed stuff, just couldn't keep the wobbles away when riding with my throttle hand resting on my leg. Will certainly work on that exercise in clutch control and balance.
Emergency braking on the wet surface was fun, as was seeing everyone else 'get it'.
I knew it was possible with good brake control to still stop hard in the wet, but stoppies Mikkel, didn't really expect to see that.
Now to make the effort to specifically go practice...well, everything.

I didn't expect it either... I guess I was just ecstatic from actually managing to lock my front up and not fall off for once :D That thing alone made the whole weekend worth it - everything else I consider a nice bonus :niceone:
I hope you got it on camera...

Holy Shit Batman. What an emense amount of learning that we had to do.
Personally Im quite chuffed. Best $200 I ever spent I reckon.
Emergancy braking in the wet - couldnt have asked for more really. I feel way more confident now than I ever did. I pretty much spent the last 2 hours after the course today driving around the quiet streets trying to lock my front. I did it once and it felt so controlled and easy to get out of. Just have to keep looking up while riding and everything comes right.
I can now also do a U-turn in the space of 2 carparks whereas before it would have been atleast 3 so now I wont have to pull to the side of the road to to a U-turn, I can just sit in the middle of the road and wait for a clear spot.
My slow speed riding has improved dramatically in 2 days. I still cant believe how much its gotten better.
Far out those circles made me dizzy though.
Cant recomend this course enough. Cant wait for the next course.
EDIT:
alex what the fuck time did you get home last night? i mean i was home at about 12ish didnt hear anything at night then i hear the kat firing up this morning!
I got in around 7am this morning, then left again at about 8:30 so long story short, I didnt get home last night.

What everyone else said, great weekend and even though I could not participate properly I did learn a lot, looking forward to getting out and practising some of those techniques, and I hope that we can have a few organised days to do so with those guys who were trained to be trainers.
Thanks Ryan for the bbq, and Jen for organising the day, Chris for the facilities, and of course Andrew and Lynne for the excellent information.
Shame a lot more folks could not attend, perhaps next time.

Well!! Whadda weekend!!!!!!!!! :wari:
Dunno bout you lot.. but ferk was I shattered Sunday night!!!
Sat dawned a typical dank & dark winters day in ChCh.. :crybaby: but did it dampen the enthusiasm of the dedicated 16.. HELL NO!!!! Resplendent in their wet weather gear (some brand new outta the packet that day!! ) they came!! :spudbooge
There were a mixed bag of ages & a vast array of knowledge & experiences amongst the participants, each eager to put their ability to the test & open to learning new ideas! :niceone:
And thus.. we were into it!
Over the weekend the participants were put through their paces learning about & practicing: slow speed control, counter steering, emergency braking (IN THE WET!!!), cornering, hazard identification, importance of wearing good gear, bike setup & maintenance, road craft skills, etc! :ride:
Each topic was fully discussed inside (in the warm..:baby:), various dvd's were shown, diagrams drawn, questions answered.. then the crew were outside & on their bikes to practice.. Andrew demonstrating first, then the lads were giving it a go themselves!
The highlight for me watching, was the circles of fear!! 2 circles.. one inside the other.. bikes going round & round, in VERY close proximity.. then joining into the neighbouring circle.. with bikes crossing in the middle to form a figure of 8 :eek5: DAMN that was good!!!!!!! :first:
Some pics...
1) Andrew doing a demo for the crew
2) All lined up.. ready for the slow race!
3) Lynne giving some feedback
4) LoC getting the learn

Sat night saw an (indoor) bbq at D esq's new place & a great night it was too!! Got to put more faces to names & interact on a social level with the crew.. over a few Baileys... Thanks Ryan & Anita!!!
Sun dawned.. the same as Sat..
But hey.. the crew were on fire regardless.. The first one even showed up at 8.30!! a good keen man! :2thumbsup
The fellas were put through their paces again throughout the day, recapping some of what they had learnt the day before, then pushed to the next level as well!
All in all.. an EXCELLENT weekend!!!!! :first:
Having done several of these courses, it was a real privilege to be on "the other side' of the table.. & getting to watch everyones confidence & ability grow so much, in such a short space of time, was the absolute highlight for me!!! :spudbooge
I would like to thank each one of the participants for your dedication & commitment to the course!!! For your open mindedness & willingness to step out of your comfort zones & push yourselves, & try new techniques!!! :Punk:
I would like to thank Chris (SVboy) for all your efforts at securing us a great venue to hold this course at!! Also for opening your home to Andrew, Lynne & myself for the weekend!!
A huge thank you to Phil Garrett at Street & Sport, for loaning the Triumph for Andrew to do the demonstrations on!!! You rock Phil!! :wari:
& most importantly.. to Andrew & Lynne of Roadsafe, for agreeing to bring your absolute wealth of knowledge & skill, to the riders of ChCh!! :first: You guys have had a huge impact in my life & after this weekend, I know a huge impact in many others lives!!! Thank YOU for your dedication & commitment to the motorcyclists of New Zealand!!!
& with that.. I'm buggered & off to bed!
Jen
ps: The weekend is best summed up with the following quote from Alex..

Had a bit of an education in the limits of the DRs clutch on the weekend.
Beware of the limits of your clutch when practising the extra slow riding technique involving bringing the revs up, dragging the back brake and using the clutch for controlling your speed.
I cooked mine to destruction on Saturday. It's a wet clutch but i managed to get it so hot it burned the oil from the plates resulting in the material wearing off the friction plates, contaminating my oil and with all that heat the springs lost the plot too.
The engine wasn't all that hot either, it all happened in the clutch basket.
It's in for repairs as I post this warning now.
Great technique, go practice it heaps, but do it in small bursts and know that you are indeed giving your clutch a hard time and do not over do it or I'm sure you will cook yours too. Also if you do practice this a lot you may want to change your oil more often too (unless your clutch doesn't share oil with the rest of your bike, and some don't).
pic attached is of some of my clutch plates, the one on the right once looked more like the ones on the left.

Clutch overhaul final cost $500 (about half was labour) plus it needs another oil change after one short run to try collect and flush away more of the burnt crap floating about in there.

Hey Alex... I wouldn't mind a copy, good excuse for a catch up and a beer, haven't caught up for ages! Naturally with me bike-less these days being a good reason, but still, pretty piss-poor excuse really :P
