It's not that bloody old Harvard that's been flying around is it? Didn't see it, but it sounded like a radial to me.

i'd say it was a Mustang. There is a Mustang that makes brief appearances every now and then. It flys into the Heathcote valley where I live at full noise and does a sweeping turn or two. FUCK it sounds awesome:cool:

But you left out the UFO option.
You shouldn't even need to see the plane to tell what it was from those three options. There should be no way anyone could confuse the sound of a Harvard with that of a Spitfire.
About as similar as my SJ50 and the VFR.

Some Spitfires have squared off wing tips. Some have VERY pointed ones too.

It may have been a Tiger 955i, they sound awesome passing at speed too!
One has been seen and heard flying around here of late.
Fantastic machines, easily confused with the sound of powerful aircraft! Cheers (from dream world) John.

it's probably the harvard that romeo posted, they've been getting low on funds and need people to buy shares...
there's no longer any spits in the south island, there's one at ardmore in Auckland being worked on, and I don't think there's any stangs at the moment

If you're in ChCh, the Spit on the stand / plinth thing out by the airport has clipped wing ends.

Clipped wings were for low-level maneuvering weren't they? (Roll rate)
Q: What were "pointy" tips for?
(The "best" ones were the ones designed to rip off at "too high speed" to prevent the whole wing from failing. That'd be something to see when you're in a dive getting away from something... thinking "what next"?...)

High Altitude. Increased wingspan gives better lift in the thin upper atmosphere. The Mk VII and XII both had the pointy tips.

No. Tim Wallis has crashed them all.
The Gate Guardian at Christchurch Airport is a fibreglass replica of TE588 and I can't remember where TE588 is now. It's ina museum on static display.

I didn't think so... I would've said clipped or rounded = mustang or spitfire, given that it's flying around chch...

The mkV has already gone, was packed up and sent about a month ago. One of my collegues knows one of the engineers restoring it.

It will be a mustang, cause I've seen it around Chch about 5 times before. The easiest way to tell its a Mustang is the farken great air scoop hung under the plane.

A beautiful plane (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=58380&highlight=Spitfire). It made it into the last Classic Wings Downunder magazine.

Well until we've managed to identify it it is per definition a UFO! :D

I was talking to an old guy who was part of a crew who used axes and a tractor to cut up mustangs for scrap after they have been flown in. They drained the tanks and used it to run the tractor!
