splitfire sparkplugs

Has anyone used these? I need some new plugs, bike shop swears by the splitfires but some quick googling all points to them being appalling.... :S

I think these have a purpose in certain engines and several manufactures have versions, the genuine Splitfire plugs don't rate that high but if you have a look NGK make a version of the same thing, I have used them and their u-grove type plugs in cars and it seemed to make a difference but these were engines where every bit of assistance helped.

Try to stick with the manufactures recommendation in a quality brand of plug.

One of the guys at work uses them in his import drag car. He reckons they made an extra 4 hp on the dyno, but they don't last very long. Good for only a couple of meets and about a thousand k's and they have eroded to nubbins.:argh:
He just runs them at race days now.

Platinum or irridium tipped will.......but at $25-$50ea lucky I only need one.

back when i had an XR200 i used one and it made a difference, but it also died unusually fast

You can get a similar result on the sly by cutting down the protruding electrode on a normal plug to expose more of the firing area. Wears in half the time tho. Indexing is supposed to help tho and know people who swear by it but have never been in a car where back to back comparisons are done so can't say I have seen solid proof. This is marking the "open" side of the plug with a vivid and making sure that the main gap faces the centre of the combustion chamber or exhaust valve depending on your layout. You might go thru a few plugs and little spacers getting them to line up tho!
