Its been a wee while since I have visited these forums.
Im still sick and suffering from an accident I had back in april. Shoulder is still VERY VERY painfull, fixing of the knee is yet to be started, and plastic surgery for thigh I wont persue until next summer (function doesnt seem to be impaired). The thing is, the last few glorious days , Ive soo wanted to go out for a ride. My bike was totally wrecked. I have had no positive responses from anyone when I tell them Im thinking about getting another bike, (especially my surgeons). Im struggling to make my mind up weather I should persue this or not. The accident traumatised my kids (15, 13) and was a good contribution to the split-up of my 15 year relationship. I havent been on a bike since (Not for lack of wanting, I dont know anyone close that has one) I think I need reasurance that Im not nuts thinking about this. Am I tempting fate? Is my luck that bad? What are the chances? I guess I will either have to give in to temptation or forget about it.

Welcome back Pixc!
You make me feel like a whiner. Oh wait, I AM a whiner.
see this thread here... (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=61954)
And my injuries weren't anywhere near as bad as yours. You must be tough to be even thinking about it.
But nah, you're not nuts to be thinking, wondering about getting back on a bike. Repeated doses of adrenalin and endorphins when associated with the act of riding = psychological addiction. Besides, it's fun.
I don't have any useful advice, so I'll just give you my best wishes with your recovery and good luck with the surgery to come.
Hug from Steam!

Course you're not nuts, it's a rush, one that's bitten you on the arse. I'd be surprised if you didn't feel a bit torn, and if you're struggling with the decision it's probably not a good time to make it. The weather is nice, but it sounds like you've got some healing still to do too. Would an afternoon on the back of one of the more sedate locals help? There must be someone with a couple of hours to spare for a recovering biker. If that feels OK then you might be in a better position to decide later in the year eh?

Hi Pixc,
I am sorry to hear you had a crash last April. No-one wants stuff like that to happen. I think I can understand your confusion at the moment re getting another bike or forgetting it and if it's any help I agree with what Ocean1 said.
You do sound as though you have some healing to do yet and yes, if you are struggling to make a decision then it is not the time to go ahead and make that decision yet. Give yourself more time to recover physically and emotionally.
Non-bikers will, of course, be against getting back into biking while bikers will likely see things from a different angle. That's how it is.
You are the one who will make the decision, in your own good time.
Whichever way you decide to go will be the best way for you.
Do give yourself the gift of however much time you need.
I wish you all the best.
Lea.

You're not nuts !
I had a binning a few years back, and whilst recovering from injury didn't really think too much about getting another bike. Not long after the recovery I started thinking about it, but didn't want to upset the family, friends etc, so stayed away from it for a while. I bought an old XR 200 and done a bit of trail riding (not much) but had the yearning to get back on the road.
I finally took the plunge a few weeks back and bought a new road bike (cruiser), and I'm loving it. I'd discussed it with the family first, and they're ok with it now, although a little apprehensive - as was I at first. Perhaps with time they've mellowed in their attitude a bit! My wife has already been for a couple of pillion rides and enjoyed it too.
A bit of the apprehesiveness is still there for me, but that is probably a good thing when riding on the road - as long as it doesn't lead to hesitancy or over-cautiousness.
I hope the remainder of your recovery goes well, and you make a decision that YOU are happy with, whichever way it goes ! Just take your time...

Thanks all so kindly for positive posts. I had given up on making goals because each and everyone I made in hospital, I failed to acheive (not because they were far fetched or unacheivable...just extremly bad luck) I will however make this a goal.. to be back on the road before beginning of next summer (as long as the children can manage) I guess i can always change my mind.

Do what YOU want, your kids are old enough that they should atleast try and understand this is something you want to do, and doctors are only there for advice, they can't tell you your not allowed to do something again. Be the rebel!
If you really want to get on a bike again, do it! =)

I like your attitude.I know the feeling of wanting to get a bike, and getting out on the road.It eats away at you 'im gonna get one" over and over.....spend this summer healing up,devouring bike mags, visiting bike shops.sussing all new models ,riding pillion...and your time will come again....all the best.

Yep you can always change your mind. You are a woman... :chase:
As for tempting fate. I wonder about that every time I get on my bike. Taking my brand new bike out in heavy rain on brand new slippery tyres certainly got me thinking about tempting fate. YouTube videos of squids trashing their bikes outside the dealer were playing behind my eyes.
The thing is if you don't do it you may regret it. And there's nothing to stop you having DVT and a stroke if you decide on a holiday in Fiji instead.
Life is too short to give up the things you enjoy. I'd rather I died riding and loving life than living to a ripe old age having missed out.
With that in mind only you know how much you love riding and whether the risk is worth it. Family and all that does make things difficult. My partner isn't exactly stoked with me buying a new bike a month after being hit by a car on the old one.

I doubt you can just forget about it...
I'd say learn from your misfortune and make sure you get some good riding gear (I assume from your damage report that you were not wearing anything in April) as well as a new bike. Go with your gut feeling - and take your own sweet time about it.
All the best wishes for your recovery to be swift, painless and complete. (or as close as you possibly can get ;) )
