Yeah... once in a life time eh?

I binned my Yamaha Scorpio Z yesturday during the "Quiet Monday Ride".

I won't explain all the "How did it happen" stuff cause it's all newbie shit :zzzz:

The bike is now in Red Baron being looked at some mechanics who thinks all Asians are rich...

Well, here is the photo and I'll shut up

P.S. I thank you very much also feel sorry to Kitty and Sanx for picking my bike up

Awesome stuff man, it's not often one gets a picture of a bin in progress on the road, that'll be a keeper to show the grandkids!

I assume you're all in one piece, no busted or overly bruised bits?

Anyway, don't sweat it, this is the way it goes, one n00b bin out of the way and ticked off, etc.

:niceone:

Oh mate! The mighty Scorpio with its bicycle tyres failed you?! There is an impression of denial in that photo with no signs of you acknowledging you're sliding out as you stubbornly hold on!

Priceless mate. You better log your misadventure in the who's crashed then (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=57322)thread...

 Ooh EJ, now why'd you skip the part from cornering to knee down so quickly? Glad to hear you are okay, but I think your wallet will take a beating now!

The worst bit is that you won't have wheels for a while! Still, everythings a learning opportunity?

from TW taking the photo to seeing you on the ground, bloody big truck coming down the hill, you standing in the middle of the road looking confused, and poor Choc wheels coming up the hill looking confused, more pictures from TW, and me picking up your bike (i was surprised it didnt weigh much)

Oh fuck, EJ!!! Now I know what everybody was talking about and confusing me when I asked to go for a ride today in your `Quiet' ride thread

So sorry, mate. Have you worked out what happened yet? I would've thought if you kept everything smooth line-wise, light power, didn't grab the brakes or hit poor surface, it ought to just carry on gripping. Gutted. Fantastic photo, though.

Damage doesn't look too bad -- just the light/instrument cluster? Handlebars bent? Hopefully the forks and all that are still straight. If it's just handlebars, lights and instruments, I reckon it's time to put clip-ons, bling speedo and streetfighter headlight on :rock-on: But then again it's a new bike... insurance and warranty to worry about.

Alright, here is what and how it happened:

When I took the others cornering photo shot, I decided to have a go for myself too (for my Profile Pic, ironically it is lol)

So there I went. Came upto a corner and leaned.
Peg touched the ground, its usual, I wasn't suprised...
but then I felt some pressure (weight) on the peg... I was going too far.
Then the thin rear tyre lost it's grip, and I went on sliding lol

When I was sliding, i used the momentum to get back up quickly (smooth action)

When I stood up, I thought "Hmm.... This wasn't suppose to happen...."
Then TRAINING_WHEEL and Fireball indicated saying that a truck was comming from the other side  I walked out of the road.

Unfortunately, the bike slid off the road hitting a concrete kerb :(

Lesson Learnt: Scorpio is a commuter not a sports bike

Advice to Scorpio riders: It's a commuter so don't try to ride unlike one lol

Physica damage: Nothing.... just absolutely no damage on my body :)

Gears: Pics to be uploaded soon

Freaky shit. Ask midnightmike about our conversation we had this morning at the cheesecutter ride in Taupo (was good by the way). It was about EJ, scraping pegs, obsession with getting a knee down and one day pushing it a bit far. We both were predicting it, sorry mate but confidence can be a bit of a leveler I guess.

Glad you walked away no injuries.

Anyway speaking of confidence, after 800 mint ks in two days up around Northland I was having a shit run to Putaruru this morning on my way to meet TriBoy, waiting for cows and herds of sheep on more than one occasion, to finally come around a corner to find a tractor pulling in front of me. Full locked on brakes, weaving madly trying to pick an exit route. I was fully preparing for a impact with his tyres, but luckily he turned enough to let me shoot through. Think we were both as pucked as you could get. I had almost scrubbed off all the speed so it would have been a low speed impact but an impact nether the less. :spanking: Worst 40-minutes of riding and encountering hazards I have had in the 30000+ kms I have done.

Rest of the trip was good.

Time for a new bike EJ. You are pushing that commuter to its limits. :buggerd: Hyosung time. :2thumbsup

So you ran out of ground clearance and levered a tyre off the ground? Time for a CB250RS  Must admit the Scorpio does look quite low to the ground.

Nothing wrong with thrashing the nuts off commuters. Like Bonez said, that's where the fun lies :D Go and take a look at the CG125s blatting around the bucket tracks sometime.

I'm told if you scrape the pegs everywhere on your bike, that's when you should start getting your arse off the seat and trying the knee-out cornering style. Haven't bothered with that myself yet, as peg scraping only happens to me very occasionally and by surprise (according to the period brochures, the RS has 45 degrees of lean in it before it starts touching, which is decent, so I can be lazy). I imagine there's a proper technique to be learned doing that, though, and our newbie attempts might not improve `effective' lean angle very much at first.

That is the real reason, AFAIK, of getting your knee out and hanging off -- to avoid touching down the hard bits of your bike and levering the wheels off the tarmac. No need to get the knee down as such -- that's mostly pure wank -- but hanging off the bike a tad and shifting your body around is a technique designed to reduce the angle of lean required in a corner. But this is all stuff I have no experience about whatsoever, just read it in books ;)

That Hornet GiJoe1313 linked to is selling at a damn good price! Still more than the Scorpio was new, though, so insurance wouldn't stretch for all of it. Time for a second-hand VTR250? Spada? CB250G5

Sorry I beg to differ. Sticking your knee out while riding aggressively on backroads is a very effective way to go faster more confidently and not risk as much. Plus its easier to change line suddenly and best of all it looks great. You should try it sometime... and if you do get ur knee down on the road riding like that you know to back off and save it for the track.:msn-wink:

Look E.J, I reckon you probably didn't bin and did it as a publicity stunt as you're way too humble/embarrassed to admit you're a hardcore racer/MOTO GP rider inthe making. It looks like I've just caught you red handed in the cookie jar you mungus...

Plus its easier to change line suddenly and best of all it looks great. You should try it sometime... and if you do get ur knee down on the road riding like that you know to back off and save it for the track.:msn-wink:

Yeah -- sticking knee out -- that's what I said. Getting knee down is -- wait for it -- mostly pure wank. Didn't we all learn from Tom's thread  You're arguing pretty much exactly what I wrote.

No need for me to try it; got ground clearance for Africa (thumpers are narrow buggers) and I wouldn't trust the late-1950s suspension technology that far.

The thing is man, everyone likes to have a little show off, I bet when you were younger you did, and I know he has learned a lesson from this. Everyone likes to look cool for the camera, EJ just ended up looking a different kind of cool.
Because while he and some of us think that is a cool pic to have, he also has it as a reminder of how he cocked up and now has no bike right there everytime he looks at that pic.
EJ is a smart rider, last Sat he had the courage to ask me to slow down as he wasn't comfortable with the speed we were going.
All a part of the learning process.

Agree to a certain extent Deano, but there is a feeling that this isn't going to be the last of a photo shoot gone wrong involving these young Aucklanders. Similar feelings with a young group from Hamilton as well.

My concern as myself and Mike were discussing was that sort of thing always increases the chances of an accident as everyone tries to outdo the other. I use to ride bmx and jump mountain bikes and when the boys got together the competition would always end in someone going beyond their limits. All good offroad, and its how progression happens. Trouble with what these guys is doing the only progression is to go faster (can't lean it anymore than scraping the pegs). We always had bigger jumps to make etc and it was you vs gravity (and the ground when it went wrong).

There was mention of a truck etc. He was lucky in my opinion. People talk about EJ having a experience head on his young shoulders, this couldn't be further from the truth based on this. If there was some learning that took place then great, but the typical LOL response you get from the young fellow suggests its all part of the game.

This riding thing is dangerous enough as it is without bikers setting up corners to see who can get their knee down the best. 36 bikers dead this year already and the majority of them would have simply been riding along. A few unfortunately would have been doing this sort of thing. LOL (eh EJ)

Yea, I get what your saying mate, we had a shoot up the Corromandel lookout last weekend, I don't know how fast everyone else went, but I took it easy (as you could see I wasn't leaning too hard) , as thats a long way from home to be binning it. just to clarify... when this happened there was no completion or challenge to get a knee down.. speed was not a factor in anyway it was just a chance to get a picture to show what progression we have made as learners....

EJ just happened to get his peg touching and it got pulled over.. basic mistake and we all make them, we are not out there trying to prove anything we are just riding.

Then the thin rear tyre lost it's grip, and I went on sliding lol

When I was sliding, i used the momentum to get back up quickly (smooth action)

Shit happens. People make mistakes when they're riding. Happens to the Rossi's the learners and everyone in between. The fact that EJ is big enough to admit he pushed it too far speaks volumes about his willingness to learn to be a better (and safer) rider.

Why? There is no God ordained law that says every rider must crash.

It may be worth reflecting on what the result could have been had that truck been in a different place. Crashes are never clever, never funny, and not inevitable. Sometimes shit happens, even the best riders can't get it right every time, and sometimes the Biker Gods just gang up on someone. But it's never "a bit of fun".

Ok. EJ, your photo actually tells quite a story.

It shows a bunch of young guys with poor rider skills (not to mention camera skills!) and self-control having a bit of a lark on their bikes for the camera. All these combinations unfortunately can add up to disaster as bravado usually overpowers what little commonsense and ability there is at the best of times. What next? A race over some local twisty road next Friday night with your mates to see who can get rid of their chicken strips?? It only takes one moment of bad judgment in the adrenaline pumping excitement coupled with peer pressure for it to go all horribly wrong. This is not a safe environment or mindset for anyone coming to grips with motorcycling.

I would strongly recommend you to choose your riding companions very carefully, or better yet stick to riding on your own, at your own pace that you feel comfortable with, without those other outside pressures.

Motorcycles are not fun toys, and roads are not some kind of personal playground. You need to take it very seriously or it could bite you in the butt one day.

he is a young guy who would never break the speedlimit ....ever

he does everything by the book

he is a young, well educated asian guy, who has a passion for bikes and is keen to learn...this is one accident one slide that could have happened to any of us.

he is not a hoon he is not some boy racer

he is not a poser

just a guy who loves bikes...

they were just going around a corner...i think the camera had very little to do with it.

accidents happen it is part of motorcycling....we are on 2-3 inches TOTAL of tread on the road as opposed to that of minimum 35 inches tread on the road on a car....

riding a motorcycle is a huge risk ...shit happens....

but it is lve for bikes that get us to ride them

It only takes one moment of bad judgment in the adrenaline pumping excitement coupled with peer pressure for it to go all horribly wrong. This is not a safe environment or mindset for anyone coming to grips with motorcycling.

I would strongly recommend you to choose your riding companions very carefully, or better yet stick to riding on your own, at your own pace that you feel comfortable with, without those other outside pressures.

Motorcycles are not fun toys, and roads are not some kind of personal playground. You need to take it very seriously or it could bite you in the butt one day.

I would have to agree with EJ....Who the hell are you to Judge about his friends "us" Have you ever meet any single riding companion of EJ's???
Like stated There was no speed involved no adrenaline pumping excitement no boasting on trying to get knee down and as for lack of commonsense well untill you meet us dont judge us......
As for EJ riding at his own pace so there is no presure ... EJ will ride his own ride as we all do on Monday day rides....We long accepted we dont know it all and have much to learn but hey what do you recomend? Stay riding in the carpark to fine tue our skills or just sit on our bikes in the driveway and pretend? Maybe thats how you learnt to ride but these days we actually get out there and put everything we learn to the test....If we mess something up we accept it, learn from it and move on thats what life lessons are about...I know things can go real bad real quick in life but like getting up in the morning its a risk that is taken, do we sit in our ball of cotton to protect ourselvs from all that can go wrong in the world or do we get up and get on with life? I know what i would do!!!!
Yea motorcycles are toys and expensive at that but so is skydiving or surfing.... S#^t can go wrong anywhere at any time its all about WHAT risk your willing to take. If it bites us in the ass and we survive lesson well learnt but riding is not the only thing that will bite us in the ass! and if for some reason we dont well that is the ultimate lesson.....Everything happens for a reason even reason it's self....

he is a young guy who would never break the speedlimit ....ever

he does everything by the book

he is a young, well educated asian guy, who has a passion for bikes and is keen to learn...this is one accident one slide that could have happened to any of us.

he is not a hoon he is not some boy racer

he is not a poser

just a guy who loves bikes...

they were just going around a corner...i think the camera had very little to do with it.

accidents happen it is part of motorcycling....we are on 2-3 inches TOTAL of tread on the road as opposed to that of minimum 35 inches tread on the road on a car....

riding a motorcycle is a huge risk ...shit happens....

but it is lve for bikes that get us to ride them

and i think your online name is fitting

FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK IT !!!!! I actually agree with Skidmark (and now I feel really dirty).

From my other post you can tell that Im a nana rider.

I go to the Wednesday night mentor evenings. EJ is there EVERY WEEK learning to be a better rider, and improves each and every week. NEVER does he play up or play the fool (Training Wheels is there as well BTW). He listens, practices, ask questions, and takes his riding seriously. He is about as safe as a learner can get - period!

Acting like a cock is just not in EJ's makeup.

Hell I would like a nice pic of me on my bike also and would be happy to have a shot set up (actually would love it if anyone is offering), that does not mean I would ride like a twat thru it - assuming EJ was is incorrect.

Upshot. Im pretty picky about who I ride with. And I would ride with EJ over a lot of the more experienced riders on this forum.

and Id ride with Training Wheels - coz shes neat !

Geez Skidmark, you made a great post and I be gobsmacked! :gob: I've ridden with EJ and he has a great passion and love for two wheeled contraptions, he gets around almost as much as I do and I daresay if he had the funds, he'd get around just as much if not more!

Thanks for posting and reminding us all about how incidents can happen so quickly, fortunately the consequences were relatively "minor" (and I know how different it all can be :sweatdrop) and getting us all to think about what we can do as riders to keep riding safely (or at the least rubber side down).

Hows the insurance politicking coming along? (a new can of worms I would suspect!)

he does everything by the book of course he does he's Asian

he is a young, well educated asian guy bit of a racist comment that one, I resent that, who has a passion for bikes and is keen to learn...this is one accident one slide that could have happened to any of us true if you set up a camera and do it 50 times in half an hour.

he is not a hoon he is not some boy racer thats because he doesn't have a car

he is not a poser

just a guy who loves bikes...stating the obvious

they were just going around a corner...i think the camera had very little to do with it. yeah right

accidents happen it is part of motorcycling....we are on 2-3 inches TOTAL of tread on the road as opposed to that of minimum 35 inches tread on the road on a car....again stating the obvious about the tread thing, as for the accidents part, some of us are more likely to have them than others, for obvious reasons

riding a motorcycle is a huge risk ...shit happens....not sure about huge but yeah a risk

but it is lve for bikes that get us to ride them

So you ran out of ground clearance and levered a tyre off the ground? Time for a CB250RS  Must admit the Scorpio does look quite low to the ground.

That was my "quick shifter" trick when I was playing in Clubmans at Raupuna.
Lean the VFR over in the sweeper till the peg folded up, and the gear lever got loaded, and keep the throttle pinned.
The bike would pivot round the lever, lift the back wheel off the track, unload the box so the next gear would slot home, while the drag slowed the bike slightly to stand it up a little, wheel back on the track, gear change done, and still at full loud.

As an aside, anyone who followed me into the corner would back off real quick, waiting for the crash. Was good for a couple of bike lengths up the front straight:first:

Prolly cause they're bloody heavy for the HP. You need to get on a CBR/ZXR if you want 250 power (or a 2 stroke 250).

Well guys and gals,

I leave ya'll alone for two weeks whilst i enjoy a much deserved vacation in the pacific, And bloody hell look whats happend!! E.J's binned (Sorry to hear about that my friend it happens to the best of us!, Your bike really doesnt look that bad cosmetics tend to make things look worse than they really are!). And look at the abuse this guys getting!! One might start to think he's the first person in the history of mankind to crash a motorcycle!. Then there's this guy dipshit who seems to know everything about everyone? Actually the screen name doesnt look familiar and i don't believe i've met you. However you don't know E.J! (Please correct me if i'm wrong E.J) and you don't know the group of people he rides with! I do!!.

Infact you couldnt ask for a better group of people to ride with!! safety is always a key factor with these guys and i've never seen a noob in this group purposely showing off!! So what if he wanted a photo of himself going around a bend to keep as a profile pic, And yes it turned out badly but who the hell cares!, Motorcycles are a risk in themselves and by choosing to ride one you've already accepted the fact you maybe hurt, injured or god forbid killed!!

So yes he crashed most importantly he's ok and uh let's perhaps consider not abusing the guy for the rest of his life for this mishap that could happen to any of us on any given day! and move on.

Test rode a Yamaha Zeal today.

Impression: "I am not buying this!"

Reason: The peg touched the ground while cornering. Felt a bit of chill on my back, and since that is the reason why I binned the Scorpio.

Overall: Zeal is powerful. 14,000rpm/ 4 cylinder is awesome!
It handles great, the bike is bit heavier but I could move it like the Scorpio (For a second I felt back at home). the pegs are low hence comfortable riding position.
However, those low pegs seems to be too low... (maybe not)

I think people don't seem to realise how crazy I am ... I am perfectly willing to never ever let my hornet get away from me and I don't care about any money I could possibly get in a sale on it... :oi-grr:

I am a collector. What I collect I keep.

And yes, that means I will have 1:1 scale model of a little ol'hornet mounted on a wall one day when I have decided to let the poor beastie rest.

Ahhh, but if EJ wants to have a ride on it to see what a little ol'hornet can do, then that is a different matter! :msn-wink:

I let a teacher who has been out of riding for six years on my little ol'hornet today at school. The sheer glee and joy I felt as he took off around the school on it was manna to my soul ... ... I daresay I have re-ignited the biking passion in him again muwhahaha! His wife is gonna hate me! :innocent:

And oh yes, the little ol'hornet will be mine until the end of time.

My precccciouuuuusssssssssss....

EJ what are you doing brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It looks like you're leaning too far into that corner... wait... you're actually on the ground there!!!!!!!!

Bad luck man, when u getting ya bike back?

Reason: The peg touched the ground while cornering. Felt a bit of chill on my back, and since that is the reason why I binned the Scorpio.

Well done for not chucking it down the road right then by locking up on instinct or grabbing a handful of brake as the survival reactions kick in.

I think we need to get you hanging off a bit so you can corner without using up all your ground clearance. Not to be cool but to make you a safer rider.

Now seriously, go test ride a Hornet so you can compare other bikes to it. Ditto a ZXR/CBR. Doesn't matter if you're not going to buy it as long as you don't bin it ;)

Just remember to warm up the tyres before you start getting it cranked right over and don't just drop it in full lean. Work up to it so you don't get any nasty surprises.

yeah give a hornet a ride they are very nice bikes

and cruisers don't get chicks (well the young ones anyway) and nor do clapped out/scratched 250 sports; flash naked/sports bikes get girls, but alot of girls really, really dont care.... trick is to find one who does, or be good looking enough to make her care

we envy you stephen;)

Yesterday, I did offer EJ the use of my little ol'hornet while I mooched around Borders and read all the bike magazines. He knew I just wanted to stare at haw asian gurlies because apparently he does the same too :o

And today... I just don't feel like riding! Heresy! :eek5: Just don't feel the mojo baby! :weep:

Personally, I think he just needs to spend time learning how to ride. All this "hanging off" business is total bullshit for inexperienced riders on the road.

THANK YOU!!! thank you thank you thank you thank you

And here in is where "gettin your knee down" came from... Bikes had shit ground clearance so you had to "hang off" so you didnt grind your foot pegs into little stumps!

Can someone please give this man a cookie... seriously

Right! gonna go paste this into that big tits thread now...

Hey EJ, if you're having troubles, I have a Suzuki FX 125 (Sort of a step down from your 150 but in good running condition) that I could probably flick off to you for about a grand?

I still think you are doing something wrong.

I've been studying the pic, trying to see what is eluding you.
The answer is - you are imagining things.
The rider is wearing appropriate gear, he has the correct knee out, his upper body is angled just right, he is in the perfect position in his lane for the speed he is doing.

Perhaps it's just the forward-control cruiser that is throwing you off your game?
