Hey there, angels. This event takes place in March next year, and all women are welcome (as are all men!). Even if you can't be a part of it as a rider or pillion, can you help spread the word, as in take a minute or two to checkout the website (www.herceptinriders.co.nz) and email the link to everone you know, and ask them to do the same and keep it going around? Even if all some people can do is download one petition form off the site, get 25 signatures on it then post it to the address on the bottom, that will be a big help. This event is not about any one person, its about an issue that stands to affect almost everyone in New Zealand eventually, directly or indirectly, if we can't change the status quo. Please could you take a couple of minutes to let your fingers do the walking (or the double clicking?) and gimme a leg-up on this?
Cheers.

Can't imagine you won't get plenty of support on this. One of my teachers at school passed away a few years from breast cancer, and she has - had - three or four kids, one my age and whom I was friends with for a few years. I'd be happy to do what I can in her memory, she was an amazing lady and one of my favourite mentors. Our entire community was devestated when she died.

I've just had a look through the website, looks like an event that could create a lot of awareness. Good luck to you and the participants!

I did notice on the Downloads page that registrations are closing 30 November 2007? Is this correct? You may need to extend that for some who have just heard about it via Kiwi Biker.

Awesome Idea for a great cause. I hope you get a great turnout. I won't be able to get the time off work but will look at getting the word out there.
Have a safe ride.

Yeah, massive thanks go to all of you who help spread the word. Bush telegraph seems to work pretty well among various clubs etc that talk to one another. I tried to get Kiwi Rider magazine, as the most logical entity, to help me promote this as far as it needs to go, since they seem to like to call themselves "NZ's leading source of motorcycle related news...." etc, but since they've persistently ignored me for two whole months now I've pretty much given up. Even a straighforward "piss off Max" would have been more respectful to the kiwi women and their families who need this thing to happen than absolutely zero response to ANY of my attempts to contact them by email, telephone and letter. Dunno what their problem is, really, and I'm a bit too busy to dwell on it other than to say that a bunch of "literary chestbeaters" running a show like Kiwi Rider might say something about its sensitivity to women's issues in general, and God bless whatever their intelligence levels happen to be, but I suspect that the point (erm... that this whole issue is about more than just women with breast cancer???) seems to have sailed right over their heads. Ha!... I have to tell ya, too, that its turning out to be an interesting process, finding out who is and isn't what they hold themselves up as, out there, when it comes to getting real help for an issue like this one. Its also been hugely humbling to see the efforts made and the resources donated by small players who genuinely want to do whatever they can to help, in all kinds of ways. Anyway, the upshot of it all is I've decided to stop buying Kiwi Rider from now on, and I've lifted the deadline on the ride so the news has time to spread by slower but probably just as effective means, and more registrations are coming thru. Those who can't come on the ride can still help us out with the petition thing, as a big wadge of completed lists we can slap at the head-up-the-arse polly-tishins on the day can only help, so download it, flick it to everyone you know and ask them to do the same. Like I think I've said elsewhere on this forum, if we get some success with this event, it could pave the way for better access to ALL cancer drugs, and lift our status above "second-worst country in the civilized world" for access drugs to fight so many types of the disease.
Thanks again.

Hey all,

They are still taking registration for this ride, I am looking for a corporate sponsor and going to use the attaches as my setup. I have already approached a couple of companies and have some interest.

Best places will be companies that have pokie machines as they have to re-invest the money somewhere.

You are more than welcome to use this as well.. Hope you don't target the same companies that I have..

A national women's magazine has emailed me to see if anyone coming on this event currently has breast cancer or has had it in the past, as they would like to do a story about it to tie in with what we're doing. Otherwise, I'd like to hear from any guys coming who may have lost someone to this disease, or who is riding in support of someone they love. Its not something I want to front up and ask any specific person, as its private info for yourselves but if any of you are interested in contributing in this way, it could provide a good platform for raising money for your own treatment, as well as helping highlight the issue in general. PM me here or email me thru the weblink at www.herceptinriders.co.nz to discuss this opportunity further on a confidential level.

Supporters t-shirts are now for sale for this event, check out the website to see about them. They are white with cerise pink cartoon, 20 bucks apiece plus postage, and they look GREAT. Thanks again to Dean Raybould, the cartoonist who has donated his time and skills to creat a unique political cartoon especially for the Herceptin Riders. Proceeds from the sale of the shirts will go towards boosting funds for someone who may be struggling to raise their sponsorship to come on the ride. If you can't come, support us anyway. Buy a t-shirt, be part of something great, spread the word and make it possible for someone else to come instead of you, to help us deliver that all-important message for every woman who needs it now and for those who will in the future.

Even as a guy, i fully support this cause. I've had many an argument with people convincing them that it is worth supporting mass availability of herceptin. Unfortunately as a student, uni and my bank account will clash with the ride. I will spread the word though!

Thanks, Drider, that will help. If everyone emails the web link to everyone they know and asks them to do the same, bush telegraph will gain its own momentum.

If you can scrape together enuff student pennies (know what its like, been there myself) you could maybe buy one of the supporters t-shirts! Or haul a petition around uni...
Cheers, good luck with your courses, and thanks for the encouragement.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kiwi Rider, from the bottom of my heart, for the free advertising space they have generously donated to this really important cause. I do hereby declare that my faith in that magazine has now been restored, with their advertising of this event in the magazine currently on the shelves as we speak. Ruffled feathers now lookin smooth again. Aaaahhhh.

ALSO... (drum roll needed - I'm not kidding -)
New Idea Magazine have today very very generously offered to fully sponsor a rider to come on the Herceptin Peaceful Protest Ride. This sponsorship can include a pillion, and there is enough in the pot to cover the Cook Strait if the eligible rider has to come from the South Island, so anyone wanting to come who hasn't been able to raise sponsorship may be eligible, as long as you meet New Idea's criteria. Details are on the website, but do check it out because its the sort of opportunity that can literally turn someone's life around for the better.

If time off work is a problem, it might not hurt to ask your employer if they will pay you for the week off, as their contribution to this hugely important cause. If they say no, look them in the eye and, with every ounce of seriousness you can muster, tell them you hope they or someone they love never gets breast cancer, because if they do, its, like, WELCOME TO HELL!

Great to see this event taking place.
I as yet can not say whether I have the time available to join but would like to offer some support.
I work at a cafe establishment that is enroute to NP, and wonder if I can secure some sort of event get together for those travelling on the ride as a stop over and therefore give those a chance to come and support, who may not be able to otherwise.
If there is someone who could chat with me re organising, that would be much appreciated. PM me.

Hey Shazz, thanks for the offer. I'll PM you later when I have more time to discuss this further, find out where you are, and see what we can work in. Sounds great, tho, off the bat.

Bike Rider Magazine are offering to sponsor a rider and pillion, :woohoo: no real scary criteria, just wear their t-shirts (which they will provide) and make a verbal contribution to the article they plan to do to review the event at its conclusion.

Good chance for a freebie, for anyone who wants or needs one to be able to come on this event. I guess you'll get to keep the t-shirts too. Five minutes of fame at the end... who knows where it might lead...

Personally, I'm going to keep my head down, as much as I realistically can, cos this whole thing SOOOOOO aint about me:no:.

It would help if the organiser kept bombarding this thread with updates about numbers, sponsors and stopover schedules. That way everyone would be able to plan joining up for part of the route

I actually do try and keep the threads up on the top of the lists by contributing every few days, especially if nobody else does for a while, but I'm keen to avoid people getting just totally sick of this thing by being in their faces about it the whole time, to the point where they just switch off. Its hard to find that balance between enough coverage and overload. No matter what way I do it, someone will pick a hole in it, so I'm just going to do what I believe is best, rightly or wrongly. The website, which I have been consistently encouraging people to follow, has a lot of detail on it about what's happening, where, when, etc.

As for numbers, not everyone who is riding relay with us has made themselves known to me, and likely won't as it may be a late decision for some to pick up with us wherever we are. For many, understandably, it will be weather/time/finances dependent, so I can't provide numbers, other than to say we are ten registered riders, some with pillions, with relay teams riding with us and welcoming groups in different locations, again no idea of numbers.

As for the stopover schedule, its as comprehensive as it can be, without compromising security for the riders and their bikes. Its all on the website! Under "route". If anyone wants the specifics of where we're staying and setting off from each morning, and isn't able to work it out from the info on the website, please PM me for the information.

As for sponsors, that's as comprehensive as it can be too. Again, all on the website. Under "thank you". Major sponsors are all listed and logoed down the right side of the web pages, and the random order changes as the page does.

If specific information should be out there, over and above what's already detailed, it probably means I've missed or failed to notice something. If so, I apologise, please let me know what it is and I'll try to fill in the gaps.

Thanks.

BTW, I am pleased to announce that The Bomb (LS650) has just had her "new dress" fitted today. Shit, she is GORGEOUS! She has shed her factory Cherry Red, and is now much pinker than the pinkest thing imaginable, and NOBODY will miss us. I've never seen a paint job like this, and neither has the painter himself. As a staunch anti-pinker when starting out, he now can't quite believe how stunning it looks, :niceone:and has felt the need to keep the colour sample stapled to the wall in the paint shop.

I'm in lurve, people. You've all just GOT to come and find me, somewhere on the road, just to see this with your own eyes. I haven't been able to stop smiling all day. My anti-pink husband saw that loopy, insane grin on my face and said, "Yes, there's no doubt about it. It really is very pink". :rolleyes:And actually smiled!

Photos tomorrow.

Hi Max

Just thought I would touch base and say congratulations on a well organised ride, it was great listening to all of the speakers at Parliament and to finally catchup with you. Hopefully all of the hardwork will pay off and the Government and Pharmac will come to the party - can't wait to read the article.

Congratulations and well done, you and the support riders should be very proud of yourselves.

I commend you all for your efforts - although they may be misguided and based on drug company distortion of evidence and spin.
I would be very interested to find out who fronted the money for the court case against Pharmac - wouldn't be a drug company would it?
The following link might give some insight into the murky world of drug company sponsored studies.

Sorry if I have popped any balloons but we must be careful not to be misled by vested interests. The profit margins of the big drug companies are said to exceed those of the drug cartels.http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/images/smilies/shock.gif
