View Full Version : Do you stop for people?

Well funny story really, ran outta the go go stuff on the way home tonight.

Turns out that a guy sitting beside his bike on the side of the road looking like a lost little boy isn't any cause to stop, now myself when i'm in the cage if i see someone on the side of the road that looks like they are in trouble, i pull over and stop to see if i can help. Now admittedly i has some more gas on its way so it wasn't a big deal but people were just driving past staring like i was naked or something (they wish!). One guy did wave from his cage tho, i'm guessing they are a fellow biker too, going in the opposite direction so not too worried but the amount of people on my side of the road just staring... no-one cares anymore, just rushing to and from wherever.

Do you stop for people who look like they are in trouble or need assistance? Regardless of what type of vehicle they are in?

Yeah now i'm done, venting over.

Depends on how dodgey the person on the side of the road looks, and whether I'm alone or have someone with me.

I stop if I see them in time and can do so safely. If it is a bike I will turn around and go back.
On the way home from the ATNR the other night, there was a Harley broken down on the side of the motorway, I took the next exit, went back and helped him.

Depends on really....
if the guy is on a Harley wearing a Mongrel Mob t-shirt, I might pass lol

Other, well I definitely stop for them
because there were so many people who stopped for me in the past

i slow for bikes that are stopped on the open road... slow enough to check for a wave that they are ok. havent had to stop yet. in town, i wont slow or stop. only exception would be a bike on its side.

dude i know in the states lives in florida, a few miles from where they have bike week. on his way there, he suffered a double puncture. several hundred BIKES just kept on going. he was on a highway and several miles from help. he ended up pushing.

For any vehicle? No - only, and always for bikes. In the last year I've stopped 4 times, most recently push starting a Suzuki DR for a guy on the southern motorway, probably 6 weeks ago.

I'd have a good look at ya if I can safely on the way past and if you aren't trying to wave me down or look like you're trying to indicate you need assistance then I'll keep on going. If ya already pushing it or got it in bits then yes.

Where suitable, I'll stop, it's Karma really, you can't expect people to stop for you if you don't stop for them.

It's like the wave/nod, without it we may as well just drive cages.

Riding home over the greenhithe bridge, as I went past the Model World place saw all these road cones all over the place... then saw orange scraping marks across the tarmac... then saw a car rolled on its side in the ditch far off the road... I stopped to see if they were ok, and 3 young men walked over to me saying they were ok, and please dont call the cops.. pa! ...tootled off on my merry way and called the station when I got home. Idiots. They were farting around being stupid weaving around road cones and wrote off their car in the ditch.

And usually regret it.Gas is an easy fix ,but honestly, some guys deserve to be on the side of the road. They don't have a tube of glue....sometimes.

It really is a sometimes yes and sometimes no thing ... I always slow if a bike is on the side of the road and look for a sign that they are ok .. if they look reasonable or if the Grub is with me we will often stop .. not always when on my own .. on the other hand if someone has a flat or something like that and I am in a car .. I will pick them up and take them home ... no isssues .. as I don't pillion not really on option on the bike ... but the moral is where we can we help.

I've stopped everytime ive been able when a bikes on the side of the road and not obviously looking like they're having a leak or a ciggy break. Usually I'll slow down and give a thumbs up/down signal and get a wave in return and off i go.

Not stopping must be a south island thing......

Of course I stop to help, see what's the problem. Do as you would be done by. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Blah blah etc etc.

I'd have thought it was a no-brainer. Of course ya stop.

That explains why no-one stops to help me. But I always try to stop and help ,I once stopped on the motorway to help a guy on a zxr 250 or 400 ( I don`t know it was green )my mate came by 5mins later in his ute ,I stopped him ,we loaded the bike on and then delivered it to his doorstep.

Depends. Did they give me a wave on the bike earlier when i waved to them? If so i will, if not then .........
If i pull up on my Jap bike and they are riding an imperial/sae brand and look at me like "what the fuck would you know" look as i pull up i will keep going, (might just have the tool they need on board as well).
So really its up to how i feel. A smile and signal will go a long way towards getting you back on the road.

Ditto. I think that counts as a stop -- the intent is there. If I don't see them in time, or it's otherwise not safe for me to drop anchor, then they're out of luck. But I've turned round before today to see what I could do.

As others have said, it's do as you would be done by. I've stopped twice in the time I've been in Wellington, and someone else stopped to help me out just a few weeks back.

I came across some guy pushing a Norton along the side of SH1 south of ChCh last year, while I was driving the Odyssey. He stayed with his bike and I drove the 15 miles to the next gas station (that'd have been a *long* day for him) and when I got back there was a group of at least half a dozen bikers waiting with him.

Bless! I think they thought I'd nicked the guys $20 and high-tailed it to Sky City.

I will turn around if I am going the other way.

I have rebuilt clutches, cleaned carbies, repaired leaking petrol hoses, fixed broken chains, push started, got the petrol, fixed broken throttle cables etc.

If I was stuck I would like someone to stop who can help so I assume that everyone is the same. I care not if you have a patch or is dressed like a toothpaste tube. Why should I? You are on a bike and you have a problem. If I can help I will.

If you ride past you better keep on going...

Isn't part of being a biker the fact that other bikers are part of the 'brotherhood'? Why would you not stop?

I think the last time I stopped was for a guy that worked for one of the bike shops - the bike he was riding had broken down on the Shelley Bay off-ramp. All he needed was a phone to call the shop, but it would've been crappy having to push the bike up the hill, then walk to the gas station around the corner to use the phone. It was a very small thing to lend him my cellphone to make a call, and no real inconvenience to me.

But knowing how karma works, the next time I break down, I'll be waiting for weeks for help.:buggerd:

Absolutely, as long as they don't look too much like axe murderers and it's in daylight with plenty of people around...

I'd hate to think that someone wouldn't come to my assistance if I needed help.

I stop or at the very least slow down and check to see if everythings hunky-dory. Even done it for cagers (I used to do this when I was a cager anyhows!) But the reaction you get from cagers when you're a biker helping them is priceless!

Never know when you may need the help yourself one day :innocent:

Nah. It's just that the longer you live, the bigger the proportion of the populace you've met, and the more likely you are to have met the kind of asshat who thinks that another man stopping to help him with his broken vehicle is, in fact, calling his pint a poof.

When I were a lad, some boy racers happened upon me as I was, quite literally, dragging myself out of the smoking wreckage of my mother's Honda Civic. At the time it was wedged on its side in a ditch -- I was climbing out of the driver's side window. I waved for help and got a "hooooo-oooonk" on the horn as they swept past.

Luckily, my then girlfriend's ex-boyfriend came past about ten minutes later and drove me the ten miles to the next town. While we were gone, "somebody" came back and stole the stereo.

I think that the populace has always had its fair share of shits; the glass just gets emptier as you get older.

On both sides of that situation.

Three of the last four times I've stopped I lent tools and never saw them again, did a 20k gas run and returned to find 'em gone and towed a young guy, (bike/bike) for an hour out of the sticks to be abused for declining to complete the tow on-road to the guy's home.

The other one was a big ugly bastard on an ancient XR500, helped recover and dry his bike out after a wee swim. A week later he dropped off half a dozen crayfish.

I still stop, I enjoyed the crayfish, but that's not why.

I recently pulled over for a Biker on the Hutt motorway. Turned out it was a new bike and was switching to reserve as he'd run out of gas! :) Was a 2smoker aswell.

I always try to pull over for a biker if I can safely do so. I don't feel too comfortable pulling over to help a cager just purely cause im a small guy without much beef if things aren't what they seem :(

My old ZXR konked out on the Terrace (the really steep part) managed to get it up on to semi flat - was well and truely stuck, friendly biker pulled over and helped me push it up and waited with me till back up arrived. He even gave me a business card for TSS who could pick up my bike if needed. Top bloke!

I would stop, but I’m not mechanically minded (I was recently riding on a bike that literally had no brake pads left), so the person in trouble might deem my “trying to help them” a waste of time…

I've stopped in the past and will do when i can, went back when i saw someone stopping on the mway, turned out they'd run out of gas... thankfully they were less than a k from my place and i had some gas in a tank at home They're someone on here and a member of the bike club it turned out :niceone:

When I'm on my own I slow/stop for bikes, when I'm not alone we stop for bikes and cars. Sometimes if someone is not out waving for help, it's just because they are depressed that so many people have just ignored them.

Having said that, in this modern day and age, cars don't seem to break down nearly as much.

On my way home up Ngaranga Gorge, I noticed traffic was starting to back up (unusual about 2pm), halfway up a car was parked in the right hand lane with its bonnet up. I pulled over to lend the young fulla a hand, turns out he had run out of gas - :laughing naturally I towed him to the BP up the road.

Always nice to lend and have a hand lent to help ya.

I'll stop if I can do so safely. Stopped for 3 bikes in 2 weeks recently. Figure if I don't stop why would anyone else. Feels good even when you can't help.

Don't stop for cages in the city but if I'm on the open road and see someone in trouble I'll see what I can do of they don't look too dodgy.

Wonder if people assumed you were just having a rest necrolyte.

Well yeah it could be that at a stretch, but around these parts there are wayyyyyyy too many people who are either too bush trying to make money to stay in the game, or just too far up themselves to bother thinking about helping a person on the side of the road.

I Always slow down and gesticulate appropriately...

Have only stopped twice, once on a busy road I couldnt stop until id already passed (busy road) and then (being the said busy road it was noisy) couldnt hear jack shit so had to remove gloves to remove helmet, only to find..... He was fine.

if i see a problem.

was going over gebbies recently and i saw 2 bikes at the side of the road with 2 bikers looking down the hill, i slowed right down and did a thumbs up but i dunno...in that questioning way...they thumbs upped back and nodded so i carried on.

if they'd waved or looked upset I'd have pulled over and jumped off.

I usually stop for hitchhikers. Never had any problems, but one memorable trip was when I stopped for a guy up North. I didn't realise he had swastika tattoos on his forehead until he got into my car.

Sweet and gentle bloke though. Might have been a simpleton.

i always stop for anyone. even tho im probably not much use but i always have a cell phone on me

last time i stopped was to help push start a bike last week. the guy on the bikes girlfriend didnt look like she had much more energy to push him

scared the hell out of a african immigrant once when his car died. he was in the middle of the road on a bend and was looking pretty stessed. i think he thought i was going to smash him or something but was grateful when he realised i was going to help. sounded like he was there for while. everyone that passed him had to go around him - doesnt take that much to stop and give push

there have been many times when i have been stranded and get fucked off with the popel driving past and staring. always grateful to those that stop
