View Full Version : 27th Nov - Wellington XMAS BBQ

OK. This surplants the other thread. PLEASE READ and let me know if you have any questions.

Ok… The Wellington KB – Christmas BBQ. below are the rules of engagement and a map. I'm sorry about the rules but I've had a lot of questions and this seemed the simplest way. If you have a problem or think I'm being an arsehole (again) please let me know. We want this to be a great night!

When: – Saturday, 27th November from 4pm onwards. If you want to come earlier and help with set up, let me know.

Where: – Paul and Vickis house.

Who: - All KB’ers and their families. It's ok to bring a partner or a friend or 2 but please don't abuse this offer. If they act up, I'll get WT to give them the learn....

What: - Bring the usual BBQ supplies. We will supply a BBQ, paper plates etc, some staples such as breads and some salads etc. Please provide your own tipple! If you have some sort of special diet, please let me know in advance and bring enough to poison others as well.

Weather:- There could be a few people. If it's fine, no problem. If it rains we will use the Garage as well.

House Keeping: - This is a KB Xmas BBQ. You are ALL most welcome and it will be treated as an open house event. Our house is a home and we are not overly anal about carpets / footware and stuff BUT, I will be expecting people to use your commonsense! Leave your smelly old bike boots dripping in oil at the door!

Kids: - I like kids! (especially toasted) They are great fun and warmly invited for no other reason than to provide parents with a bad example to traumatize their kids with. Stop fiddling with yourself boy or you will grow up looking like Paul. (usually does the trick) However, please don’t expect me to entertain them, mine have left home long ago (I wouldn’t entertain them) and remember that this is a bike oriented event! People will drink and get loud! (I hope) Please look out for your little ones yourself, when they get tired and grumpy, it might be best to take them home to bed! We have a big garden and they can go wild!

The Dog: - Bo had a back injury when she was little, if we don’t get her into the kennels, don’t let your kids sit on her. She will nip them, shes old and grumpy (like me). She poohs all over the place outside. I’ll get the obvious ones but get you kids to check their shoes eh?

Sleep Over?: - We have 2 spare single and a double. XJ/Frosty has dibs on one already. First in first served. Couches and floors available, I’ll have cereal with bananas for breakfast please after you have vacuumed!

Drinking: - Yes!

Smoking:- Outside only please.

Recreational Drugs: - Not for me and at your own risk BUT if I see you using near any kids I will ask you not to. Once!

Music:- Well I call it music… Some people don’t! despite what Mangel6 thinks I have a wide selection of many different styles. I favor Alt Country, Blues and Soul.
• Bring a fave CD if you like (no bloody hip hop rap shite) but I think we can safely say I can fill the average evening.
• If you want a Kareoke (whatever) then talk to Mike. As long as he can get it there we will find a spot.
• If you want to bring instruments and can play. Form a separate thread and lets make up a scratch band.

Parking:- Bikes down the drive and into the garage. Some car parking down the drive. Please leave the drive clear for people carting stuff in and out. It’s a narrow cul-de-sac so parking is at a premium

Help: It would be nice if someone local can help with.

1 - An extra BBQ and implements,
2 - Extra outdoor tables / chairs etc.
3 - Extra Chilly bin and ice for drinks
4 - Speaker extension cable?

Transport: If you are comming up from town by train we can do a pick up from the station and a taxi back (to the station) is bugger all. Best is to organise a group and hire a shuttle back to town. Again, a seperate thread?

General;- Crap! What a lot of rules for a stupid BBQ? It’s all commonsense really; there could be a lot of people there so we just need to make sure we all have FUN (and we will)

Phew!

See Ya there or Be Square. Feel free to post here if you are a comin' so we get an idea of the numbers.

Can I bring a sleeping bag, and just sleep on the floor somewhere, or in the garage, or in the crawl space in your roof? I'll probably prefer to go home, and I don't plan on drinking much anyway.

Oh, do you have a bunsen burner for me to heat my heroine spoon on? :msn-wink:

Hey Pnz, count me in, reckon it would be alright to convoy back with a few non drink riders so less chance of getting bunged by the fuzz?
as for a speaker cable, what kind of one do you need?
i can try to find either type (i dont know how much you know about A/V) either the stereo/mono type which looks like what you use to plug in your headphones or the AV type which is like what you use to plug in your video player.
Anyways i can get anything from 5M to about 20M if you want :D

Ok

It's all coming along nicely!

Speaker cable. Sorted thanks. With the Juke Box coming we won't need to move stuff like that about.

Chairs, bring what you can but don't panic. Most people will stand about as bullshitting and dribbling is easier that way!

If you are coming on your bike, just bring what you can manage, we will fill in the gaps.

Right ho!

Joni? You realise we are 50km north of town? You are welcome to stay friday night with us (I will be driving north at???). Conversely, if you are staying in town you can catch a train north (run at worst hourly and about $6 to $8) and we can grab you from paraparaumu.

Tony/Frosty will arrive at 8:30 sat night. Do we have a volunteer to pick him and BB up at the airport and deliver to the BBQ? Comeon Don't be shy!

Vicki and I will drop you off the next day for the return flight or what ever else ya wanna do!

As far as food goes. The best advice is bring whats reasonable given your circumstances and we will fill in the rest. If that means a panic trip to Pak N Slave, thats OK!

People travelling on trains, planes and motorbikes can't be expected to hump bloody great salads and shit about the place especially when top priority should be given to expensive plonk which you can't possibly finish and have to leave behind for me to polish off on sunday!

I think the OP will be...

This is a simple BBQ. Potentially we could have 40 plus people and from experience, it's just too hard to try and get clever with food for that many at once unless you have catering equipment. You end up arsing about with the food and the guests drink too much on empty stomachs and... Oh dear! Just remember, a lot of KB'rs own digital cameras!

If everyone brings a little something we will have a feast! Just don't expect a fully catered banquet!

We will provide some simple bulk pastas, salads and bulk like breads and stuff. We will have sausages / savs for the wee folk and they will be first food priority.

We will see about desert this week (if I can still get a deal on the ice creams)

Cheers

Bread, sauage, tomato sauce. Alcohol. That's all that's needed.

As posted on the transport thread:
I'll be taking a car or van BUT ONLY if it's wetish or worse. You'll have to phone me on the day (PM me for the number). Trip is from Newlands area out there. Don't know what time I'll be heading back.

Not too many are passengers with me twice... :shit:

http://www.spaceagepop.com/mantovan.htm says:

Mantovani was a cornerstone of the easy listening business for over 30 years. His father was the principal violinist at La Scala under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. Moving with his family to England in 1912, Mantovani eventually studied music at Trinity College and, after graduation, formed his own orchestra, starting out in theaters in and around Birmingham. By the the start of World War Two, Mantovani's was among the most popular groups on the BBC and the theater circuit. Mantovani served as musical director for a number of long-forgotten British musicals and plays, inlcuding several by Noel Coward.

After the war, he began to focus on recording, and eventually abandoned live performances entirely. Working primarily with arranger Ronnie Binge, he developed a big cascading string sound that as featured on his first big hit, "Charmaine," in 1951. Mantovani spent hours working in the studio with microphone placements and other techniques to perfect the lush feeling and dramatic effects.

Mantovani recorded on Decca through the mid-1950s, when he switched to London, for who he cranked out over 50 albums, many of them charting in the Top 40. He also had a string of best-selling singles with such space age pop staples as "The Song from Moulin Rouge," "Swedish Rhapsody," and "Exodus." He is reputed to have been the first act in the music business to sell over one million stereo recordings, and as a quick look at most thrift store music sections will tell you, he pushed out an incredible volume of product. His album of music from Exodus stayed in the Top 40 for the better part of a year in 1961, and the same year, London bundled 5 of his albums together in a special promotional deal and together they all reached "Gold Record" status. Virtually all of Mantovani's music is unexceptional and uninteresting, however, regardless of the enticiveness of the tunes covered.

I like the sound of that list. I have an unusual taste in music, when compared with just about any of the people my age that I know. Old music, new pop/rock, it's all good to me :cool2:

Oh!

Junior Brown, Fred Eaglesmith and John Prine will get a spin and you HAVE to ask me about 'Merry Christmas from the Family' and Robert Earl Keen..... Vicki HATES it... (needless to say I think it's frickin hilarious)

Lyrics are...

Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk
At our Christmas party
We were drinkin' champagne punch
And homemade eggnog

Little sister brought her new boyfriend
He was a Mexican
We didn't know what to think of him
'Til he sang Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad

Brother Ken brought his kids with him
The three from his first wife Lynn
And the two identical twins
From his second wife MaryNell

Of course he brought his new wife Kaye
Who talks all about AA
Chain smokin' while the stero plays
Noel, Noel, The first Noel

Carve the turkey turn the ball game on
Mix Margaritas when the eggnog's gone
Send somebody to the Quik-Pak store
We need some ice and an extention cord
A can of bean dip and some Diet Rite
A box of tampons and some Marlboro Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family

Fran and Rita drove from Harlingen
I can't remember how I'm kin to them
But when they tried to plug their motorhome in
They blew our christmas lights

Cousin David knew just what went wrong
So we all waited on our front lawn
He threw the breaker and the lights came on
And we sang Silent Night
Oh Silent Night

Carve the turkey turn the ballgame on
Make Bloody Marys cause we all want one
Send somebody to the Stop 'n Go
We need some celery and a can of fake snow
A bag of lemons and some Dite Sprite
A box of tampons and some Salem Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family

Feliz Navidad.
