Boots for Xmas

My oldest is looking for some riding boots now when he is doing more riding. To work, to g/f's, to town, for the w/e away trip.

As this is something I have never worried about for my self as I have always been riding in JR's or army boots, ( And still do ) I was wondering what would be a pair that would do the trick and not put too big a hole in my bank account.

I recon a set of easy off and on ones that don't let to much water in and does not look too out of place if he was to keep them on for an hour or two while in town or visiting someone. Could go for JR type ones like I been using. But wondering what else there is that would be OK?

Have seen some on TM in the $100 - $200 range.

Any suggestions?

I bought some Dririders from Motomail up here for under $200 a while back. They have ankle protection but are quite comfy to wear. They don't let in a drop of water - I ride whatever the weather and I've never had to change my socks when I get to the destination (underwear, often - you don't have an easy solution to make my trousers and jacket more waterproof, do ya?) :)

Can't find them on either their website or Cycletreads, but I'm sure they're pretty standard Budget Boots...

Hubby and I have both had these boots for 18 months. We aren't every day riders so they haven't had excessive use. My left boot started leaking a while ago around the plasticy bit sewn on top where your gear lever hits.

Saturday rode for probably 45 mins in light but constant rain and both my boots seriously leaked.

Had to ride home on Sunday....oh yum wet boots....it rained the last hour to home and my boots had let so much water in that it was coming out the seams when I walked. Bloody wonderful.

Hubbys (bought at same time) are also starting to leak a bit as well, and on both ours the glue holding the sole on is giving way around the edges. Will have to do some serious work with dubbin. Have been trying to find a glue to restick the sole but everything I've looked at seems to be contact glue and I can't hold the sole away from the boot for 5 mins before sticking together as it's not coming away that badly yet. Might take them to a shoe repair place me thinks!

Concensus: I wouldn't buy them again. Nor can I afford two new pairs of better ones.

Does anyone know who to contact in NZ about Dririder gear? I would like to let them know about our boots as I'm not impressed, and want some suggestions from them as to how to fix. Of course I don't expect them replaced, but I also don't expect them to leak like that after only 18 months of often irregular use!

^ Well, my experience has been a little different on Dririder boots.

I used them when I was riding back in Melbourne in winter 06 and I was pretty frikking impressed on how well they worked in the rain/heavy showers and overall. I would've only owned them no more than 5 months so I can't comment on how durable they are over time.

But one thing I will mention is that the gear lever pad on the left foot is a bit crap and from memory I don't even think they even had one. So you guessed it, after a few weeks of riding there's a big frikkin mark in the left boot and the gear lever kept eating it away. I think over time it will eventually leak as mentioned by Mazz.

It did it's job for keeping me waterproof but they could sure sort out the left boot.

I once had a nice pair of Derbi boots

But the steel shank inside the sole couldn't handle the effort of kick starting my bike and bent :(

Current issue NZ Army combat boots work well for me

i purchased a pair of Forma boots for about $100 they have basic armor never leaked through and they have yet to fall apart from use

they are good for a cheap boot that lasts and is water proof and cheap to!

i bought some alpinestars on tardme nice boot and comfy, havnt had any leakage problems either

ive had my dririder boots for 20 months and ride in all weather,including a time when welly flooded and my bike was in up over the disk brakes it was that deep and they still dont leak, i will say though that they are my second pair, the first pair, the zip broke on the fisrt day so i took them back and got a new pair no probs.

I just had a really good look at both pairs of our boots and they are worse than I thought. The glue sticking the sole on is just not doing it's job and they are coming apart in many places. No wonder mine were so full of water. I've found out who to contact re Dririder products in NZ and I'm definately going to give them some feedback.

I have had the dri riders for 11 months, ridden all through winter so far so good, feet have always been dry even if other parts have been damp, comfy to wear for long periods off the bike ..

I got them as I figured I wanted something I'd still be likely to wear when visiting friends so full on race boots were out.

Brilliant boots. Comfy, warm, dry. Can't imagine commuting in anything else now.
