View Full Version : Pming somebody over a red rep?

McDuck
9th December 2007, 11:22
Well i just got a PM regarding a red rep i gave a few months back informing me that i am a number of nasty things because somebody did not like what i said the few months back when i gave the rep.

So what do you guys think? Would you PM? Red rep back? Or just ignore it or be an absolute dickwad about it?

Well, the only fair way to judge this is to post here both your Red Rep comments and the PM response.
Let us decide.:jerry:
Or... are you a little ashamed of the red rep comment you gave? Come on, tell all.

McDuck
9th December 2007, 11:27
Not alowed to post PMs without other persons comments and i can not remeber what the rep comment was. Somthign like it is not as easy when it applys to you.

I give a rats arse that everyone is trying to reduce my pretty row of red by giving me greenies. It's bloody annoying.

If the pm is abusive then contact a senior mod (kickaha or Cajun). Otherwise, put the clown on ignore and carry on with your life knowing that you won't have to see the dribble from that person again.

mcduck... as far as height goes, you are bigger than EVERYONE... including col!

just delete the pm, or report if it is abusive and carry on with life as you know. [btw... having tried the ignore thing in the past, dont bother. it got annoying having to click all their posts to see if they were saying stuff about me. in the end i just took em off, and the animosity i felt is almost totally gone.

Why on earth would you want to see what they were posting about you if they were on your ignore list? Clicking to check their posts totally defeats the purpose dont you think?

The ignore function is great. If you are taking a bit of flack from someone, put them on your ignore list, hey presto - end of problem, because you simply dont see what they are saying, you get no PM's and no reputation either. Bloody brilliant I say!

I always thought Red rep was like a declaration of war....y'know, like the single most offensive thing you can do to someone online...so it's not serious then? People do it lightly....it's not an accepted reason to take out a contract on someone? Oh dear...that's going to cost me a few bob to cancel the contracts and pay all those gunmen to go back to Glasgow... As you were.

Just don't give rep! What's the point. Scrap the rep system altogether.

What?
10th December 2007, 07:59
I have used the rep system, but could not care less if it was scrapped.
But then again, I once responded to a red repping and began an intelligent (for me) conversation with the bloke who red repped me. The result is that when the opportunity arises, I will try to hook up with this guy for a beer. I reckon it will very likely be one more top person I have met through this site.

I look it from 2 angles… myself as a member of KB and myself as the SF of KB.

On a personal level, I feel that opinions are good, and if you don’t agree with someone then express it through the reputation system if you have the need to…. I don’t really care to be honest. If someone red reps me, life does not end in the least… people being abusive via the rep system, is just a confirmation that they take themselves way too seriously… in fact its fucken funny when someone does an emotional red dump in my CP… do they really think it will keep me awake at night? Stupid really….

From an SF points of view… abuse it not allowed, and it someone is abusing you via the rep system, via the pm system and of course via the forums itself, you should be pm’ing a Moderator of the site and letting them know…

I have a problem with the reputation system, because you have people who use it to abuse, and get stuck in childish, petty “rep wars” – if someone gives you a red rep… so what, who cares…. But if it affects you so much, have a think as to why you got it… if for no reason, then move on… if you were being a arse, then maybe you deserved it.

All this drama about reputation has always made me think the rep system should be removed all together – it brings out the arsehole in some people.

I've always thought its a pretty negative tool that can and does get abused
more often than not. Theres a certain (self delusional) superior attitude attached to a serial red repper I reakon.

If someone decides they just don't like you, you get repped for no good reason - "cos they can"

The green rep system however, creates a real positive community feeling.

I always appreciate red rep if the comment is constructive. However, comments like "wrong" when expressing your personal opinion or comments that have NO relevance for the post involved are simply ridiculous and I look forward to becoming a seníor member with the priviledge of knowing who're behind such "gems".
Personally I'll only red rep if people are posting things that I both disagree with and that I fear might actually have a negative impact upon peoples real life behaviour. Or if people are feverishly spreading lies or misleading propaganda.
I'll green rep more or less anything that I appreciate and I tend to green rep people who corrects mistakes that I make.

As for the ignore list - I can't see why I would use it. I'm quickly learning who's comments I should disregard and who's comments are worth another glance. All forms of abuse, whether directed at myself or anyone else, are a quick way to being put onto my mental ignorelist...

I've had the "wrong, wrong, wrong" in the red rep comments area as well (it won't surprise me if its the same person).

Like, repetition for emphasis lol, and all I was doing was expressing my opinion ( sticking up for the masses that were getting shot down actually) but because this person started the thread in the first place I believe they claimed that their final say on the subject was how the world actually is.
I think thats called narrow mindedness.
