View Full Version : Beers and riding

Was at the Puhoi pub the Saturday and I was interested to note that I was one of the few there not knowing back a few (or more) beers (could have killed for one tho', and certainly made up for it when I got home).

It made me think of the "top cop says all born-again bikers are pissheads and whatever thread"

Personally I choose not to drink at all if Im riding. If Im in the cage I will happily have a couple (only).

So - whats your limit if you are riding the bike.

Yeah maybe one for me...a few for the cage though.

every once and a while i might have one beer no more, but 99% of time just have a handle of coke instead, and i also only have one coming close to end of riding for the day

if i am just around town close to home i might have two

1 1/2 per hour... give or take... no more than 4 in total and less if there's no food/I'm tired/I can feel it "kicking in"

2 is my limit... Only if staying put for a couple of hours with food as well, wont skull two beers then leave 20mins later or anything remotely similar!!
my licence is worth too much to me, oh and my life too

Edit: ... I drink 4% beers... not the 5's. ya know... two exports = 2 drinks... two heineken's = 2.6 drinks. something to be mindful about if your having 'a couple of beers'...

Well I suppose 3 or more covers it, however a few more options would be handy for hostibalfood.

If I'm riding I will not partake at all. Each to their own, but I would rather not have any.

Although that can be rather hard when it is a beautiful sunny day. After a morning of riding ,a beer with lunch just sounds soooo good.

Only the one for me when on the Tauranga Thursday Night when I first pull up around 7pm, normally leave at 10-11pm.
On a long ride like the Loop, none at all.

I have no trouble drinking a couple of pints and then get on my bike - IF (and only if) it's at a pub fairly close to home (or my destination). However, I am mindful of increased reaction time and will keep a larger following distance than usual.

I'm not touching the stuff if I'm out on the open road or have to commute through peak-hour traffic. If I'm riding with a group of people who are drinking on the ride I will tend to sit at the back of the pack and keep a good safe following distance.

I may consider 1 over dinner, but my alcahol tolerance isn't that great, and if I've got the Missus on pillion, it's tea...tee..hee..ah, nothin' for me.

A wine or two if I am in the car.

Get so drunk ya seeing stars the next day...:Punk: Student pisshead here.....

Never ride while over the limit, it's just stupid, and not worth the risk these days...too expensive as well....

Being duink and doing burnouts on ya driveway, fucking it up in front of your mates....priceless.

That's it too much thinking, off for a beer.

I'll usually have one or two on a long ride but it's usually followed by a good
drink of water to prevent dehydration.

If I am driving the car I will have a wine with dinner or lunch, but not if I am on my bike. But a lot of people I know would have one or two beers, wait a bit, then ride, which is fine as long as people are sensible and know their own limits I think.

Don't drink alcohol when I'm out. It's too much fun watching other people make prats of themselves.

Besides after a couple of beers I'm off to the pisser every couple of minutes.

I know....guess on a bike they think about themselves and in a car they don't........

Okay on a bike you need all ya facilties but then in a car it is too easy and comfortable that the alcohol makes no difference so the potential danger is the same.

Zero alcohol is the way I see it......don't need alcohol to have a fun ride and fun with mates off the bike.

I tremble at even admitting to this, :sweatdrop but since I got my bike, I realised why they actually make light beer.

On my first trip to the (very local) pub, I had one real one, then a couple of those.

But my general intention is to stay right away from the stuff if my bikes is involved.

Different story with 4 wheels parked outside.

ps. they don't actually taste that bad but please don't tell my non-riding mates I said that.

I've been driving a car for more than 3 decades, so I consider myself fairly experienced/skilled in that area. I will quite happily have a wine or two over a few hours and drive.
However I have only been riding little more than a year, and don't believe that I have the necessary reflexes/reactions to ride safely after a drink.

Yeah - I'll admit to drinking the light stuff... when on bike, or a driver - I've found that the flavour of Lions 'Light Ice' improved considerably by adding a slice of lemon (al la Corona) into the bottle, then drinking. Quite pleasant in fact...

I am happy to admit I will have a few drinks with driving and sometimes two or three with riding. I know the limits well as I used to blow on the machine after a drinks with the boys at the end of shift..... the amazing thing was how much variance there is between different people and it also depends on many other factors, prior sleep, food intake, prior drinking over a long period, body type etc etc.

I could have 6 beers and be half the limit, another guy would do 5 and be over the limit - and so needed a ride home. He was smaller and more lean than me.

Basically it varies for everyone. The last person I caught before leaving the job was under 20 - he had one pint and was over the limit. Food for thought for the younger riders out there - it may not take much at all.

The legal limit is quite generous. So if you are over it, you are an idiot. You don't want to hear those words "you are now required to accompany me....".

.... or worse "we gather here today to remember....."

Cheeky sod. :bleh: Didn't say I preferred it. ...well cheap alcohol is OK... - but my preferred tipple is 8yo Wild Turkey (101proof) - or even more preferred is the 1855 Reserve barrel proof (110proof), but that's like rocking horse droppings to get a hold of these days - and it's not weak. OR cheap. Dammit.
But I learned a long time ago that firewater and bikes don't mix. Neither do big ditches and 1100's at speed. Took me a few more years and a new alternator to realise that lots of beers and a bike still aren't that much of a fun idea either. Sometimes I'm a slow learner. But I think I've got it worked out now.:nono::bash::dodge::eek5::scooter:

Got a bucket of Corona,
Enough stories to last all night,
About the trials and tribulations,
Of findin' Mr. Right
Of findin' a good man.

Here's to the liars and the cheaters
And the cold mistreaters
To the mama's boys who can't make a stand.
Here's to the superficial players
The I love you too-soon sayers
If you hear me girls raise your hand
Let's have a toast
Here's to findin' a good man.

Blind dates and horror stories
Pushy guys and fast movers
Let's dedicate this girl's night out
To big talkers bad losers
It's so hard findin' a good man.

I might ride after at most two drinks, then about 3hrs wait beforehand. But even then it depends on the month of year and day of week, because the legal limit here is a nice round zero, so if the fuzz are out doing breathtests it would be bybye license.

Two cans and then I ride home - or - three or more and get a lift.
The difference between 2 and 3 is quite noticable to me anyway, I would say 3 cans in a row is probably over the legal limit and sure as hell wouldn't like to find out the hard way.:Police:

I don't do drink before I do either of those activities.

But I do think that riding a bike requires more judgement than a car. So anything that interferes with your sense of judgement is a really bad idea i.e. alcohol, drugs, tiredness etc.

I'm always up for a thirst quencher (1) if there's a great pub to stop at. Will drink lites if hanging around for a good feed and enjoy about 2-4 (lites) depending on time.
A fridge full of cold ones back at home, enjoying the afterglow of a fine ride are best.
