Hi there,
If you were me - would you buy this?
Honda VT 250 1989, WOf and Rego. V Twin. 51000 kms
http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/auction_detail.asp?id=17736015
No :nono: I'm not selling it - I want to buy it. I want to know if this bike is "recommended" :ride: .
WHERE IN AUCKLAND (preferably near the city) DO U RECOMMEND I GO TO HAVE THIS BIKE TESTED? :)
As far as experience goes - I used to ride a 100kg automatic scooter :scooter: 6 years ago. Since then I've only ridden a cycle a couple of times. :Playnice: I still need to learn how to use a geared bike.
Right now I lead the bidding. This is a blind and impulsive purchase and i'm praying I don't get burnt :shit: I haven't even seen the bike in person :crybaby:
Buts it's a bike - they are not supposed to make sense - otherwise we would all be driving 500cc electric cars. :2guns:

I would take it to any decent Motorcycle shop, Colemans, Mt Eden etc.
As for the bike itself, I guess the price is fair decent, but in reality I would have liked to have taken it for a test run first.

Ok dude my honest opinion. 1) the seller is full of shit. -I say that because 1-Vt250's did not come out in yellow so its clearly a respray and 2-there is a section of fairing under the headlight missing which indicates a patch up job.
That said It may very well be a decent bike -and Vt250's usually arent too bad at all.
If you want it looked over I'd be happy to have a look at it for ya just to get an opinion from someone more experienced.

Hey FROSTY - You serious about giving it the once over? I would r e e e ally appreciate it.
The auction expires tomorrow midday and I will get in touch with the guy then. By the way my numbers are 629 0573 and 0211343055.
Yes I agree with the comments on the paint job - must be a respray - so maybe some crash damage

Yeah, the price doesn't sound too bad as it stands. Buying blind is always a risk though.
It's an FG model like mine - the most powerful of the bunch - a supposed 43hp. I've found mine a great bike to learn on.
They're fairly solid engines - though the cam chains can give trouble. There is also apparently a flaw in the oil supply system meaning that it is possible for the crank to lose lubrication - that can be avoided though by regular oil/filter replacement and a minor modification involving an extra washer.
They're supposedly very well handling bikes also - I really have nothing to compare against so I wouldn't know, but it's certainly a blast to ride :2thumbsup too easy to scrape the pegs.
The almost identical bikes were marketed in the USA as VTR250's - they had a greatly detuned engine though.
Here's a few links for you to go through if you feel the need:

2-there is a section of fairing under the headlight missing which indicates a patch up job.
hmmm, looks to me as if it's just been painted black for some odd reason? I can't remember there being any extra pieces of fairing under there. Certainly a respray though - not particularly fond of the colour they chose, but I guess each to their own...
justsomeguy
2nd November 2004, 23:28
Yea - if I do get it. It's going to be sprayed black whenever I get the cash. you see I watched the TV show Street Hawk growing up along with Knight Rider. So it is branded on my brain - Any colour as long as it's black.

Dude that was (well not that one but one exactly the same ) my first bike. They go like shit but be weary cause i managed to bend the crank shaft on mine somehow. So i did an engine transplant. So if you need to know anything about them mechanically or otherwise give me a yell.
Problems : engines can go pop (mine did at 86000km but they can last)
reg/recs are shit as (all honda's are but this is particularly bad)
and when they go bang a lot of other stuff does to.
Good points : really really forgiving (have got it almost sideways without
coming off)and dont break to much when you crash
them (twice in the first 2 weeks of riding) :2thumbsup
Heps of power out of corners good reliable bike if it hasn't been
fucked by previous owner.
So if you need any help give me a call. P.s. you want it to be checked out really well go to ricky at Mt Eden motorcycles

P.s. after my second little incident i resprayed the whole bike myself a beautifull metallic cobalt blue. Borrowed a mates compressor and did the whole thing for about $250 :niceone: :niceone:

Just got off the phone with Frosty. He's the kindest guy isn't he
By the way aff-man - I spoke to ricky at Mt Eden - he too seems like a nice chap.
Will first get Frosty's word. Having a few issues with schedules as I  am working night shifts and everyone else works days.
Ok now who should I ring to get my basic handling skills test?
- I took one about 3 years ago - but I've lost the certificate :bash: . And besides, I need to sit it again cos I still need some tuition. I went to the Auck Moto Club at Ellerslie.

If any of you are free please drop by at 12noon.
Fingers Crossed.

I DIDN'T BUY IT.
Turns out it was a piece of crap. Needed both cam chains replaced. new rear shocks, new chain, full service, new carbs, new tyres, the oil was :pinch: . The only thing good about it was a metallic pearl yellow spray. With the usual scratches near the headlights.
Ricky said it's not worth it. He said it was barely worth 500. So yeah - I'm still bikeless. Guess I will buy from a shop now. Maybe Mt Eden motorcyles it self. I don't know.
What do you guys think of a FZR250? They've got one there (Mt Eden Motorcycles) they are repairing. Saying that maybe they can do that for 2500 - thats twice the price the stupid VT250 was going for
.... runs well - no problems - my arse -- I hate it when people falsely advertise.

Yes but you get the warrenty (3 months or something) and believe me it's worth it. I am gonna start saving now so that the next bike i buy comes from a dealer with a warrenty aye. Pity about the vt the guy didn't look to happy :ar15: . but hopefully you'll get something. Talk to gareth he has that gf for sale

Ok - But I think I'll count my blessings and buy from a shop. Will check out that FZR250. Chris said he was the guy who bought it originally. Have any of you dealt with him?
Can you dear experienced people please shed some wisdom over this model - good and bad points : FZR250
Thanks in advance

I personally would have an FZR250RR anyday, but I hear a few stories of breakages.
However there aren't that many around isn't there?

5th November 2004, 09:52
chris is a good bloke. But as i said make sure you get the 3 month warrenty. That way any probles would mean they have to fix. Then save your pennies and if you still going hard at the end of 3 months maybe something else or if you happy with the fzr keep it

I guess I should look a bit more closely at that FZR at MT Eden - I am a complete newbie to the bike scene. So I know nothing about models or variants. All I know is that it is a FZR and it has twin round headlamps. It is a 89 model with under 23000 k's on it. Unless someone has rewound :angry2: the odometer. There is also the word GENESIS on the rear bit - connecting the seat to the tailight over the rear wheel. The fairings are a mess - and they are not going to repair them. The bike has been sitting around for a while and it is pretty dusty - really needs to be freshened up. They say the mechanical bits are great -
Any feedback and info on this bike and the good and bad variants will be greatly appreciated. It looks a bit like the bike in the pics.

Thanks
