View Full Version : Why is an HT lead called an HT lead?

HT lead, stands for High Tension lead, right? The electrical cable that takes the power to your sparkplug.
So why is it called a High Tension lead? Where's the tension? I don't see no stinkin tension.
Tension implies something is stretched tightly, the opposite of compression.
Maybe it means something different in electrickery-speak.

Hold on to it when the bike is running. You'll know all about tension then.

'Tension', in this case, is a synonym for voltage (http://www.engineering-timelines.com/how/electricity/definitions.asp).

I suspect (no proof whatsoever) that it's a hangover from National Grid type transmission lines which while being high voltage, are also pulled up to "High Tension".
As with many other like situations, all high voltage lines have become colloquialised to high tension ones.

Because HIGH TENSION sounds better than HIGH VOLTAGE :girlfight:

because one of the meanings of the word 'tension' is voltage, potential, or electromotive force?

Yeah, you'd be right. But.......

There's an apostrophe in your signature which shouldn't be there.

No argument there - I was just enjoying the irony.

Thanks Katm..
I mean jrandom, couldn't be mucking up the fine standards of grammar that seems to be the norm on KB!

Does this mean I am in trouble for being off topic? What is BDOTGNZA?

Even more ironically - there is now another spelling mistake that either wasn't there before or I missed the first time.

Just to say something remotely on topic to appear interested - I was a bit sleepy one morning and grabbed at the HT cables instead of the choke. The difference is quite shocking!

No - quite right it wasn't there before, but if I simply added a correction without a corresponding error both sides of the signature would no longer be in balance.

Aaaa yes... you need Big Dave's thread DAMHIK (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=62708)...

Rule #1 of the BDOTGNZA Charter states:

"All meetings of the BDOTGNZA shall involve single malt Scotch whisky."

HT (High tension) dates back to the old days....

A coil would have a low tension side (12V) and a high tension side (lotsa volts). Coil ignition was pretty new fangled at one stage and even into the early 60's competition bikes used magento ignition so some terms came over from engineeering.

Think of power pylons - they are still called high tension lines....

Enforcement is a necessary evil. Mr jrandom has "ways and means" that shall remain enigmatically mysterious. And rightfully so. There are many things best left unspoken.

Rule #2 of the BDOTGNZA Charter condones the consumption of approved types of pizza with the single malt Scotch.

Rule #3 sets certain necessary minimum standards for hand-maidens connected with Rules #1, #2 and #12.

Rule #4 relates to membership qualification (by invitation only)

I'm starting to look at the BDOTGNZA a bit differently. I always thought you were just anal wankers, but now I see you are actually anal wankers with style.

I'm not sure I'd call it fascinating . . . certainly sounds messy however.

Can I take it for granted that this is a link that if I click it will make the content police here at work happy that they have a pervert that needs to be fired due to accessing questionable material from a work computer? At least you made it plain what the link may be attached to but I hope all others at least make questionable content links obvious for those of us who should be working not wasting time on the net!

If a work admin is reading this its called "reasearch on the topic of social networking - the sites and uses of online forums"
for a paper we are giving in summer school!

... make the content police here at work happy that they have a pervert that needs to be fired due to accessing questionable material from a work computer?

It's an article (no pictorial material) entitled 'An Introduction to Anal Masturbation'.

Whilst it's obviously not work related, neither is this thread on KB, so you are presumably already operating within your employer's guidelines about personal internet use.

The textual content of the article violates no NZ censorship legalities, and reading it on your screen cannot possibly relate to the typical clauses in employment contracts about displaying offensive material.

So, no, I don't think an NSFW warning is required.
