Why it's a good idea to buy stuff using Visa...

MrsB and I went into the Suite Centre a few weeks back and bought a new lounge suite. We decided to wait until moving into the new house before taking delivery. Then with about 2 weeks to go before the big move we hear that The Suite Centre have ceased trading!!! We immediately call the storage facility that supposedly had our suite.... after a few days of general farking about it is established that 'our' lounge suite never existed. We resigned ourselves to waving goodbye to $2,500:bye:

Then someone suggested that because we paid by Visa, we should be able to lodge a dispute and get our money back. Forms were filled out and we waited. Articles in the paper shared hardluck stories of people laybuying a $4,500 lounge suite and having just $150 to pay when the bastards went under....and there being no lounge suite.....

Then today I get an email- Visa had refunded us the $2,500!!! Farking AWESOME!!!

So the moral of the story is that if you're buying something that you're not taking delivery of, pay by Visa if you can, cause if the goods go west, you have protection.

ive got a mastercard that i use for all big ticket purchases that wont give me a cash discount or as in this case i need to trust a dodgy shop.

thinking about changing to visa as they do presales at alot of concerts and stuff these days. bastards.

if you're doing a big overseas trip its also worth checking out upgrading to a gold card to use the free travel insurance.......

Yep I use my Visa card whenever I can - even if its just to buy a drink from the servo. Doesn't cost me anything extra. Not only do I get rewards points for everything I spend but I save on eftpos fees too. The only time I use my eftpos card is at places that don't take visa.

Then you just have to make sure you pay off your credit card from your eftpos account at the end of every month so you don't pay any interest.

Visa & MasterCard have very similar chargeback systems, if at all possible, use a credit card for making online purchases rather than Paypal as the they offer very little protection. Essentially, Visa & MasterCard offer very similar services...the differentiation generally comes from the issuing bank, ie. what's the annual fee, the interest free days, loyalty offerings etc.

It is worth checking what level of travel insurance you're getting...some issuers offer very basic travel & accident insurance where others have the full cover. Gold/Platinum often offer other benefits too.

NO, don't agree with you, the moral of the story is to think twice about taking any actions for possible future outcomes which may not exist. In this case don't pay for goods that you don't have possession of, then and there not matter how good the deal is/was.

As now if you look back and reflect you are back to where you started from. That is NO COUCH plus all the hassle that you went through. Ponder.

We were assured the goods were there. They checked their computer stock lists and then 'rang and made sure' with the warehouse while we were watching. We CHOSE not to take delivery. The store has been in the same location for a number of years. It was expanded about 2 years ago, and was packed with high quality furniture when we were there. We didn't buy immediately, but instead waited a week while checking out the offerings of at least 5 other stores.

So something went wrong somewhere? Are you saying the furniture store coned ya? Do you believe that they had the couch in stock at the time you finalised the deal but then somehow it disappeared? Or were you lead to believe they had it?

The law in this situation seems to be completely ineffective. These people were taking money knowing full well that they didn't have the goods and that they were unlikely to ever get them. How is that not fraud or theft?
