Well it had to happen one day?

Story....Friday 7/12/07

meon3 sold the trike to a guy from down Windom. He flew up and Leeann (meon3) picked him up from the airport, took him into town for him to buy some gear and then home to pick it up.

Deal done and Leeann decides that it would be a good idea for us to ride with him a little way and show him the way out of Rotorua. We geared up and decided to go 2 up on the KTM.

Followed the trike in towards Ngongotaha along Tauranga Direct Rd and just prior to the Hamurana Rd intersection I decided to overtake the trike and show him which way to turn. As I began to veer left again the front wheel lost all grip and began to tuck in on me, I managed to correct and the rim rolled on the tyre the other way.

By this point Leeann had tucked in behind me and was holding on for dear life. Not being able to control the front down we went. We slid along the road for about 60m before stopping in our lane. When I managed to grab a breath I got up and checked on Leeann. The only obvious damage to her was a portion of flesh missing from by her elbow. I only had trouble breathing.

Once at the bike I found that the front tyre was completly flat and the bead had been completly broken!

Phoned a friend who took us to Hospital. Verdict.....Leeann has shaved her elbow right down to and including some bone. I have 2 or 3 fractured ribs.

Leeann is still in hospital till at least tomorrow. I was sent home Sunday.

Attached are pics of our gear...

Holy shite......... I am so glad to hear that you two are ok...
Please pass on my regards to meon3 and tell her to rest up...... and look after the elbow.
Krusti, no laughing until those ribs are healed up, cos it will hurt if you laugh.

The bike can be fixed.....

:grouphug: :grouphug:

Maybe you two are safer on a trike afterall........

I can still remember the day I meet you two and young Josh...... outside Mt Eden bikes..
The trike was a awesome sight to see...... I just hope the new owner looks after the trike.

After seeing the damage to our Spidi jackets we are thinking we will go back to leather! Leeanns elbow armour slipped around becoming useless!

Dragon jeans, bloody awesome.

Jeez mate, thats a shocker! Hope you both heal up well.

Hmm. Were they adjusted (can they be adjusted) to be a good tight fit? I'm sure we've all heard how inferior Cordura is to leather in a slide, but I've never really considered the slightly baggier fit, moving armour etc.

Being a bit on the rotund side, my jacket's pretty snug, but the missus' isn't quite so snug on her... Might make sure she's all strapped up tight next time she gets out on the bike.

Glad to hear you guys walked away -- a successful landing, however much it might sting.

Far canal mate! Thank goodness you are both alive and kicking. Ouch for the elbow and ribs. Interesting to hear of the armour slipping. Take care!

geez bro! that sux!
glad you're (semi) ok tho. grinding an elbow has GOT to smart! ouch!

re gear; my cordura stuff has stayed in place during an off or two, through-out all sorts of contortions! ;) don't write the stuff off just yet man!

so when ya coming back down t' the pub then?

Glad to hear you fellas are waking wounded - as for cordura? I won't touch the stuff any more after a short slide in good fitting cordura pants with armour left me with some ugly damage from friction. Basically the cordura melts within about the first 5 metres and the tight fitting nature (that holds the armour in place) is lost, the armour slips round and it's bye bye flesh.

Leather all the way - wrap yourself in dead cattle.

OUCH! Sounds like a nasty wee crash. Hope the ribs don't give you too many problems - sometimes you can function OK with a couple of busted ones, and sometimes you're stuffed, and just have to prop yourself in a corner so you can't move too much, and wait for the damn things to heal.
I can sympathise with Leeann too - banged my elbows up once (bruises from mid forearm to mid upper arm, both elbows), and SHIT were they sore for ages. Seemed to get banged all the damn time too...

Heal well. Ride soon.

Just about a year ago I took some "flying lessons" but my Spidi H2Out really saved my knee fom a real pasting. A mix of textile + leather on the tough bits.
If I hadn't been wearing that gear when I landed on my knee/hand/foot I would have been really hurt. I broke an ankle but could have wrecked my knee, which would have been far worse. Thank you Mr Spidi!

Now that you know what caused it......
Have you since gone back to the shop that fitted the tyre and informed them?
If only, so that they are more careful, when fitting new tyres.....

Bugger - that sounds real scary!! Do you think the crimped tyre caused the accident ie your inability to recover the bike when the tyre was under duress? If this had happened in Aus, you'd be trotting off to court right about now to get all manner of damages and costs. . .

I'm so glad you two are relatively unscathed - at least I hope Meon3's elbow is nothing too lasting.

Take it easy!

Jan.

Crimped tube caused tire to rapidly deflate! Problem was that the tyre went flat just as we began to veer back into our lane. Managed to right the bike but rim just rolled across tyre the other way.

Luckily I had given the guy on the trike instructions for emergency braking.!

Fortunate for us that it happened on a long straight.

Got a right bollocking from the nurse at A&E when we turned up in a car. Should have called Ambo she told us...:doctor:
