I was working this morning and the radio inside the building was telling a news about a girl who got her eyes gouged during an exorcism thingy.
I wanted to say "meh" and get over it but the radio was repeating it over and over multiple times.
So I say, seriously wtf?
WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand woman drowned in a family exorcism ceremony and her younger cousin had her eyes gouged by relatives in an attempt to lift a curse, a newspaper reported on Monday.
Janet Moses, 22, had her eyes scratched and water syringed into them before drowning in front of 40 relatives during the exorcism ceremony in October, the Dominion Post newspaper said.
Her 14-year-old cousin also had her eyes gouged and water poured down her throat to get rid of a devil the relatives said they saw in her eyes.
The girl nearly drowned and was taken to a hospital where she underwent surgery to restore her vision.
The family believe that the curse started when a family member stole a stone-made lion statue from a local pub, the Dominion said.
"It's a homicide inquiry so I can't comment further," a police spokesman told Reuters.

Just like the body snatching thing - it's *cultural* so probably nothing will happen.
Would be really interesting to see the outcome if (for arguments sake) the eame sort of things were done by (and to) non-"tangata whenua".

Religion - its why the world is fucked. Live your life for what it is, when you die you're gone. There is no devil, and drowning your own family is just fucked up. Shoot them before they spread.

Superstition, prejudice and bigotry have more sway than 'religion', as such. If you disagree, come and gouge my eyes out with spoons.

Religion is not such a bad idea when it teaches people to be kind, humble, help and respect others, etc. It's the fundamentalists that are the problem, the ones that don't take blood transfusions and treat anyone outside their religion as a demon.

This happened a few months back I believe and I think it is awesome that they are finally looking at prosecuting someone for Janets murder and attempted murder of her cousin.
The police orginally said that they were unsure what charges were likely to be laid, if any, due to the sensitive nature of the cultural belief

Makutu .. or lifting of said curses/entities .. does not warrant any physical contact at all with the 'possessed' or so called ...
Im going out on a limb here ... quite literally .. but .. the person/s responsible for lifting .. should be able to do this spiritually .. the same way one does with soul retrieval .. they walk between without needing to lay one physical touch ..
I read the artical .. and I'm sorry .. but these people have other agendas .. and I am not sure what exactly they were doing .. but I can guarentee it is not something practiced culturally.
Most indigenous cultures work Shamanically .. the motivation here is sadistic.

Not often enough, given that they seem to continue to breed above replacement levels.
I'd hazard a guess that the devil they saw in her eyes was actually a reflection of themselves.
Fuckwits!
Crazy people exist everywhere, religious or not: those guys are fucking sick :angry2:

I'm not into religions at all but the only religion i'm aware of teaching this and actually RESPECTING it by ALL their people, would be the Bouddists...But kinda agree with ya that fondamentalists are the worse...

This double standard happens all the time, in fact we encourage maori superstition.
We pay them to bless our library, new building or footy park.
We pay maori to use "special vision" to see if we are building on land that may have "sacred" dead maori on.
(I guess the "sacred" dead maori were the ones who ate the "scared" then dead maori.)
We even move roads and highways because of Taniwhas.
Still, we are gonna take their patches, and if they want an extra "H" in Wanganui let 'em have it. We gave them every other written word, whats one more.

This issue is more about morons than Maori. I think that racist attacks are entirely unwarranted.

I'd ascribe it to organised religion personally. It's not all bad... very very very far from it normally, but it does have one or two ugly sides and the followers' willingness to allow others to do the thinking for them is one of the big ones.

...as always.

... and yet Parliament has it's daily prayer, the highest office in the land. It's not a Maori thing - it's a societal thing. Get over it

Sure are unwarranted but its the standard KB reply and if you read most threads youll notice that alot of racism sits on this forum, rather disheartening when you come on here and keep on seeing it.

Yes, but you see it is actually OK to be racist for some on here, in fact they actively seek to make sure that their bigotry is shoved into our faces.

It's not a societal thing at all. Most of society has ditched the nonsense for what it is. It's a dumb thing.. that has no place in the modern world.

Makutu is a part of the religion - or practises which was not being done correctly. I agree with Fire eyes what was done here was sadistic and extremely bad. They did not mean to kill so therefore something along the lines of manslaugter is correct - but what they did do was wrong.
When practising Makutu a kuia must be present - this group of people were not there with a kuia they were on their own - similar to other people playing with ouija boards - or the spiritual world as they see it - with no guidance from those who know what they are doing.

He is not a rednexk Crasher - he is a straight out racist - there is a wide difference.
