Hey Guys, Say you were a good rider and can race where would the best place to get picked up by sponsers be? or do you have to seek it in some cases?

Sponsors aren't like talent scouts for Playboy. You will have to seek them out, rather than waiting for them to seduce you with riches, even if you're the next Valentino Rossi.

Yeah, sponsors don't find you. You find them.

"Getting picked up" is probably best undertaken in K' road. You'd wanna be pretty good to earn enough to race though.

Hey Guys, Say you were a good rider and can race where would the best place to get picked up by sponsers be? or do you have to seek it in some cases?

First off , can you race ? , are you a good rider??.
Have you got any kind of record to put to a sponsor ?
A sponsor will want to be able to see a return of some sort and differant companies in specific catagories will want to see differant types of returns.
You need to be able to show yourself as , Keen , Able to communicate with knowledge of the sponsors company/ product, Be seen to have a can do attitude, And the list goes on. Basically you need to be passionate about your racing and have a certain amount of credential or at least a level of achievment already and to have respect from your competition will be a good base for any research on you by a sponsor.
I know there are a myriad of reasons a sponsor will or wont give you support but basically you have to be likable and able to walk the walk to match the talk if you want a deal to allow you to give it a good go.
I get very good value from my sponsor and i make sure i give good value back to the sponsor which will not always mean that you win, thats a bonus for you as you can come almost last in a race series and give a sponsor the best possible exposure, the media is a funny thing .
Stay squeeky clean and put in the effort and make yourself a name and you have then got something to offer a sponsor, its harder than you think but i fell onto a silver spoon and that makes sure the bowl is always full of food in the pantry.

 There you go...I'm a Honda rider, but I'll take pity on your heathen ways! :msn-wink:

SinstaNSR...I have no experience in racing, but a friend of mine has been racing for a few years now, and one of the things I took part in to help was the compilation of a portfolio for him.

It basically highlighted a personal profile of him as a person, then had various race reports with photos, talked about his goals for the racing future of his team, etc. Not to forget a history of his wins thoughout his career.

He made a few copies (read a lot of copies) and hand delivered them to a lot of different companies, with a list of price packages for exposure on his bike and/ or riding gear, with a projection for potential media coverage...

Hope this helps, good luck...

The best way in our little tight arse country is, that someone you know, know's someone who may know someone, and then presto. you may have some coins from someone that know's someone

May I suggest also that it will be as much about the person as thier ability to ride.
I sure as hell wouldn't put time, money or effort into someone who isn't focused, committed or that I didn't have faith in as a person, no matter how good a rider he/she was.

great call,
in the end sponsoring someone in NZ does not make you money, you do it for the love of the sport, or to support someone you like, more often than not a combination of them both

I kinda disagree that the sponsor will want to see a return , lets face it sponsorship in amateur racing is either provided because the sponsor has a love or interest in the sport, or has pity, or all of the above, very rarely will a sponsor recieve any benefit out of amateur racing or proffesional racing for that matter, sponsorship is a way of offsetting tax and at the same time recieving some enjoyment out of a sport you love,
my suggestion would be , to approach family or friends that have companies ,(the bigger the better , and put a proposal together, most companies will have funds allocated for charities and sorts and or sponsorship( lets face it racing is a charity, you only have to look at the nz nationals and the turn out of people, virtually none,)

i believe it doesnt matter if you are just starting a lot of people will bet on an underdog.
good luck and give it a shot

I applaude your voicing your dissagreement ...... however you are i take it presuming that by the word "RETURN " i was meaning money $$$$ .
Wrong , a return to any company sponsoring a racer will be anything from spreading a name around to giving out promo sheets , helping at trade type expos or anything that will incorporate the company name / product sponsoring you.
I can use myself as an example and point out the amount of times i quote my sponsors name and even named my bike The Canbrace 400 after the product.
Profile is a return and so is money but you wont get money back from racing in this country as far as i know (not enough to cover outlays anyway) .
As a final, ill let you know a secret that my sponsor has never riden a bike , they scare him and he has no real desire to drag his sorry ass to watch me or any of my team members racing.
REASON ; he does not need to come to watch or like motorcycle racing to see a return for the investment he has made in me, that comes from word of mouth and other sources. I can park my bike outside a coffee caravan in the main street and give Canbrace more advertising value than a large sign ever could.
Cheers Paul.

It usually helps to not go around calling complete strangers "wannabe hoes". Overwise you'll just be seen as the total liability that you probably are.

Will do. Though it's probably best to just plaster up on here that you want to sell isn't it? Afraid you'll get some nutters claiming they want to check the bike out and instead they just want to find out where you live?
