I'm going to assume it was the bus's fault. Driving home I noticed a biker just beyond the corner of Bowen St and Lampton Quay in the foyer of the Gubbermint building - he'd gone down :( The Ambo's were there, the biker had his boot off and was on his cell so he was relatively ok thankfully... The bike was upright so didn't seem too damaged. Of course all of this was spied within the space of a few seconds (driving) so I know that the bus was a fault!

You may find this hard to believe, but I have a close relative who is a bus driver AND a motorcyclist in Wellington.

He finds many motorcyclists as much of a menace as most bikers think bus drivers are a menace.

He said he'll see a bike in his mirror, but next thing they've popped up right beside and/or in front, and his bus isn't as manouverable as a bike (funnily enough). And he said so many wear black they are really hard to see, he wishes more would use high vis vests, as those that do are much easier to keep an eye on.

So, to summarise....

The rider the gave the bus the old "Carbon nuckle" warning and then wee'd a little with excitement at the "impression he had left". The ambo's were clearly only there to get the boot off to clear the wee and ensure it didnt back up the corduras and drown him........ Right ?? :lol:

Seriously though, hope rider and bike are both OK and terrorising buses again in short order.

To avoid nasty conflicts between bikers and buses that pull out without looking, the CHCH city council has a great new idea.

But wait.. theres more - As the bus stops all the time, it takes forever to get anywhere, and it can't compete with the car or motorcycle, as its simply too slow.

Solution ? Stop the bus in the middle of the road, so cars and bikers can't pass. Then the bus is just as fast as private transport.

What happens at a bus boarder?

For passengers?
The platform provides an area for the passenger to wait away from normal pedestrian traffic. The fence on the footpath side of the bus boarder directs passengers to a safe crossing point over the cycle lane. Passengers need to be aware of cyclists approaching the bus boarder on the cycle lane.

For cyclists?
The marked cycle lane, leading to and behind the bus boarder platform, directs cyclists where to travel. Signage and markings on the carriageway clearly show the cycle lane. The cycle lane behind the bus boarder is to be used at all times, i.e. whether there is a bus at the bus boarder or not. Cyclists need to be aware of pedestrians crossing to and from the bus boarder.

For a motorist?
Motorists must stop behind the bus and wait for passengers to board or alight the bus. All vehicles must stay behind the bus while it is stopped.

For the bus?
The bus stops at the bus boarder, which maintains its place in the traffic stream when picking up and dropping off passengers.

Sounds like the trams in Melbourne. when they stop to disgorge contents, the traffic comes screeching to a halt behind them. It's a hanging offence to pass while the little flag on the side of the tram is out and I don't know how they've done it, but I NEVER saw a vehicle ignore this rule.

Saw plenty of vehicles nearly committing hari kari trying to pass when the tram was going, however, as of course no one wanted to get stuck behind one . . .

Trams are cool for tourists and shoppers, but a complete bitch to have in the middle of general traffic.

D'auckland busses have been doing this for a while now. I just thought it was the lazy fuckers who drive them, not having the extra energy to turn the wheel, so as to actually use the layby provided for them to on & offload passengers.
