Opinions on ZX9R '00?

Hey all

I have finally gotten rid of the TLS, so am looking at bikes again.
Took a Street Triple for a test ride - big mistake! its perfect and I cant fault it, aside from it being a bit more than I should be spending :weep:

Origionally I was looking at Ninjas, of all sizes. I have found a 2000 model 9R for a good price and want to hear opinions?
Have owned a 7R and ridden a 12R, so im assuming its going to be roughly the same idea?

mmm, not really. Bloodlines are there for sure, but the 9 will be alot more nimble than either the 12 or 7, lighter and shorter (wheelbase) with nice power. Performancewise it'll sit between these two.If I remember correctly the 2000/01 9r had a minor on/off throttle issue with the carbs in stock form.
A Very underated bike, which sometimes isn't a bad thing.

Good bike I think based on what you have said RE funds, I also reckon the RF900 the Yam 1000 Thunderace are pretty good as well, dont know there price range though

All 9R owners love kawasaki and in paricular the 9R.

I will put a vote in for the 9R even though mine is a little older than the one you are looking at. I am really really biased but you are allowed to be when you own one of the greatest bikes ever built. I find the raw aggessive nature of the 9r fantastic. I commute on mine every day and are coming up to 100,000km on it.

Yeah I'll vouch for that - you'd better get one quick before he's back in the market, otherwise you'll pay twice as much cause he'll be bidding against you.


Some General Advice:

All Models:

I had the valve clearances done at 41,000kms and they were out of spec and needed adjustment, so if you are looking at any bikes over 40,000 make sure you have proof for the Valve Clearances being checked. Even if the bike has 50,000 don't assume they were done.

B Model 1994-98

I've only had one problem with my 'B' model and that was the Thermo Fan Switch went intermittent after about 39,000 kms. Front brakes are adequete but not at all like the modern sports bikes.
Almost nil aftermarket bling available for them (ie huggers, tail tidies, rearsets etc)

C Model 98-99

Watch out for gearbox problems with 3rd -> 4th gear!!! There was a design fault that is well documented on the site I mentioned above and many other sites. I cannot bt certain but I'd suspect given any bikes age and kms that you are likely to buy now the problem would already have been fixed but you can never be sure.

Also I have read about carb problems with the main jets wearing out - not a biggy but in some instances it was the bed that were worn by aftermarket needle kits and the owners needed to replace the carbs.

E + F Models

I don't know much about these but I believe that the clipons on these are now under the top yoke so I'm guessing they would be a lot more "sporty" to ride.

General Inpressions

Before moving to NZ I had a 98 Honda VFR800FI then the 2001 VFR800FI, these bikes were valued around $13,000 when I bought them. After moving to NZ I bought my 95 ZX9R for $4700 and I can honestly say I enjoy this bike much more and its like a third the price. I find it more fun to ride plus unbelievably I find it more comfortable. My wife finds them much the same to pillion on, but personally I think the split seat on the ZX9 is a draw back when pillioning. From a riders perspective the ZX9 is great 2up and a lot of fun solo.

Tyre wear on mine has been pretty reasonable I estimate that I will be getting 10,000kms from my Bridgestone BT-020 rear, this is great life but I have been feeling it start to move around a bit lately - its possible that it is because my riding is starting to get a bit more agressive but regardless I think I'll try something else next time

I have the '98 C1 model, had it for 27,000 trouble free Kms, bullet proof, easy riding position, but heavy enough to be stable.
The longest I have ever owned a motorcycle, it just does everything that it should.

Good bikes. Popular Sport tourer with a lean towards the sporting side. Buy one. You will not regret it.

Inlet: 0.15 ~ 0.24mm
Exhaust: 0.22 ~ 0.31mm

'00 ZX9R - great bikes. Mine felt like the YZF750 SP, only with a lot more poke at the top end. (the full Akropovich system must have helped). Comfy,(double bubble screen helps - although they look crap), handled well, commuted well and would still see 280k - good all rounder - I loved it.
Would still have it if the 'roo hadn't got in the way.....!!!
