Hey guys

Apparently the Mt Wellington track will be open again tomorrow for buckets, minimotos and motards. I paid $10 today for 2 x 10 minute sessions which were choice fun.

It's a bit of a laugh watching the races (especially full-grown men on mini motos). So, come on down if you're free tomorrow - it's free to watch. I might try and get another couple of sessions on the KTM if some other Motards riders show up again, though she shook herself to bits today (just spent 4 hours tightening every screw nut and bolt on my bike).

Start: 9.30am
Finish: Early avo.

Well, since I will be in Auckland for the morning, I'll stop by for a few laps!

I'm going on a short ride in the morning, hopefully I can get back in time to check it out. I've been meaning to come and have a look for a while.

I had another squiz down at the track today. Primed with a little more confidence from the day before I pushed the KTM a little harder but quickly realised that my tyres weren't up to scratch (the rear had worn down quite a lot already). After two 10 minute practice sessions, the four of us on motards rode out for a casual race. About 5 laps in I came off the start / finish line straight and hit the first left hand bend as the video shows and then overbaked it into the corner resulting in a bit of a low slide. Even without frame / axel sliders the KTM was fine (just a scratch to the rear axel nut).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-DAsPROxAM

After that I picked up the KTM and did another two laps but then heard a massive crack and then grinding sounds from the engine...:crybaby:

I hope it's just the clutch, but my gut tells me that sound came from the gearbox... So yeah, first race weekend and it's all over:(

Anyway, I had a great time and now have till Feb (next race meet) to get the KTM up and running again.

Thought that might have been you that binned it today (I was sitting up by the clubrooms watching at that stage).

Just a little bit hot comming into the corner and accelerating out pushed you over the edge, not that I can talk, I binned my bucket three times on saturday, hope that damage isint to major.

Ouch!

Pity I only stayed for 10 mins.

It would've been sweet to see you bin, I mean race...

Macstar
16th December 2007, 15:50
No crash damage as such, but internal mechanical dramas. Will know more next week when she's opened up.

Can't put name to face Pumba- but hope to see you next year again. Maybe I should race a bucket too (might be cheaper...?!).

P.S. Hungus: Still no on-road bins in all my days of riding:innocent:

Well, no injuries sustained then?

And the leathers? Any rips or tears?

The honour badge that you carry after a bin!

Bummer about your bin and breakage.

Sorry I didn't reply to your text from yesterday, was up north out of range till this arvo, would have come but had our family Xmas lunch get together yesterday, (that time of year already)

If you bike turns into a major, you can just throw it in the bin and buy mine, I am purchasing a business and I think i'm going to need the cash so it may hit the market.

Actually yeah. I have a small tear in the leather on the inside of my elbow and leather grazes over the arm, back and leg. Even at that speed I managed to get bruises and a some light grazing to my arm and leg. Maybe RJays leathers aint that good? (I'd hate to bin at 100kph or more).

Shut up man! I told you not to jinx me like that! Radiators are sweet (well no worsely banged up than they were before) - hopefully mechanics won't be too serious.

No worries mate - I hope to have a full time job next year (no more $218 p/w from the student allowance!).

ktm guts either look like money and incessant problems, or money and constant maintenance.... i think this one is the former - easy way to tell will be the amount and size of metal filings in the oil:niceone:

i do hope it isn't serious though; quite an investment to have imploding on you

shoulda bought a honda/yamaha:bleh:

I had a 00 520EXC and it was a great bike.
We found that it was best to done regular oil changes. (5-10 hours)
And by that I don't mean changing the filters as well. (30hrs because you are changing the oil and it's cleaner)

Their are like all bikes a few thing to keep an eye on.

A big AL left handed threaded nut on the crank right side can come loose if it has not been loctited properly.
You will hear it rattle if it comes loose and if you stop riding little damage will be done, an oil change would be mandatory and re tighten the nut and loctite it properly.

And there is on the earlier 520 a nut and bolt that is used to activate the de-com for the electric start, that could come loose.
I up graded mine to 03 spec's.
It was later replaced with a moulded stump on the cam sprocket.

You can use these bike on the road if you look after the oil.
The big thing is that they do not have a cush drive in the rear hub, so this is hard on the gear box and chain when you ride them on the road a lot.

Doesnt supprise me, I lurk in the shaddows and go about my own buisness. And I only guessed as to who not long before your bin, when you pulled a stoppie comming into the pits, thought process was sort of like hey isint there a guy on KB with a 520 KTM trying to pull stoppies at the moment, (I retain the most usless knowedge in my head).

If you were round on saturday at about 2pm you might remember a bike and rider doing a head first dive into the grass right in front of the pits, that was me.

Cheers. If I can get my bike to the mechanic today I'm going to pull it apart in his workshop and under his supervision (an awesome mentor). From my description he reckons could be gearbox too (please please please).

Ha, nah I had gone by then unfort so missed your bin. Whilst I also suck at stoppies that thread came from another mate of mine.

Anyway, I'll be back  (with decent rubber, frame sliders and repaired mechanics!).

Took the engine out today and opened her up. You'd never guess what caused the damage / breakdown...

The previous owner had the cam chain and bearings, piston etc done in 2004 at Tony Rees Motorcycles in Whakatane (I'll be putting a name and shame up in the mechanical area of KB later).

However, two ball bearings had dropped out of the cam chain bearing ring and fallen into the bottom of the motor below the fly wheel, trapped in a guard where they must have sat for three years undisturbed. The mechanic from Tony Rees did not obviously attempt to retreive these ball bearings however and must have left them there (quite knowingly I may add, as he removed and replaced the aforementioned bearing).

Anyway, after that bin of mine the ball bearings must have obviously shifted and then entered the gear box (ripping teeth from 6th gear) and the crank shaft balance and other cogs that I don't even know their names but totalling about $700 worth. So now that she's opened up I guess I might as well do the piston, rings and a few other bits and pieces.

My mechanic is hooking me up but I think I'm still looking at around $1600 in total...:weep:

On the plus side, this is basically going to end up being a full engine rebuild for damn near half the price an outfit like AMPs would charge - (trying to make myself feel better).

Anyway, just goes to show eh? All that mechanic from Tony Reeds needed to do was remove the clutch cover (5 mins) and the ball bearings would have probably been sitting right there in plain sight. But he didn't.......... Fancy bolting an engine back together knowing that somewhere inside it two ball bearings could be floating around?

I know your comment was a semi-joke, so don't worry, this reply is not written angrily:

My only regret is not that I didn't spend that money on a nice sports bike, but that I didn't buy a newer motard that was already decked out. Sports bikes are sadly quite boring at legal speeds (well, after riding a motard around anyway).

I have NEVER had so much fun on a bike than what the KTM has brought me over the last couple of months. My track day fee was $10, and I binned and did virtually no damage to me or the bike. Sports bike track day is $100, a bin $2000? (Also you're going to probably be going twice as fast so if you do bin... ouch!).

So yeah, bummer that this particular bike has cost me a few bob, but man it has been worth it!

Thanks mate. I think I'll just get all the parts new and at once from KTM here in NZ. They should be ordered tomorrow and delivered by Wednesday!!

I was keen on a the larger bore and piston kit from KTM World that would have increased her from 520-576cc, but that was $1000... Money better spent on a new bike mid through next year.

It hurt my GF more than me! Some may think I'm crazy for writing this, but I actually feel quite relieved that I finally had a bin (and of course that it was in a controlled track enviropnment and no injuries).

I do think though that my Rjays leathers are shit and will not recommend them to anyone. I think they are 1.3 or 1.5mm thick. My next leathers will be double that.

I agree, the bin is worthwhile from different perspective as you find out few important things:
1: Your skill limitation or the KTM limitation around that corner.
2: Rjays leathers = not good
3: The gf really loves and cares you so much?

If I was insane like you and have a bit of extra money on the side to blow I'll definitely consider getting a Motard.

I have always wanted to ripp shit up in the dirt and get some dirty action going on the Motorcross bikes well before I even considered getting my motorcycle licence. Yup, it was all those crazy x-treme T.V shows which had them fluffing around the giant sand dunes which had me sold.

It's one of those must do's before I hit 25!
