Have anyone had a snoring problem that they have managed to fix?

I've heard about that nasel delivery system and a co-worker knows someone that has had success with it. Just wondered if any others on here have tried it and got results.

Yeah throwing pillows, socks or anything you can get your hands on works for a wee while...long enough to get to sleep anyway.

I have a magic weight point above which I snore constantly and below which I almost never snore.

If snoring's a problem, I recommend the "get that fork out of your face" diet and the "get your fat arse off the couch" training plan.

Agreed! but, some snore from other reasons apart from over weight, I am not fat, yet I snore like a freight train sometimes, tis a defect in my sinuses I am told.

I had my turbinates cauterised when I was 12. Made a world of difference to permanently obstructed sinuses. I take it you've investigated all such options with an ENT specialist?

Staying drugged up to avoid seasonal or chronic rhinitis is a good move, too. Flixonase for the win!

My ex is not overweight but has always snored like a trooper from when a kid apparently.

Is horrendously destructive to a relationship, you wouldn't believe it until you've tried to sleep with a snorer . . .

We tried the mouthguards which hold your jaw forward - they work well, but the dentist said they were buggering his teeth, and ex found it gave him a really sore neck and jaw. So don't bother with those.

Do you (assumption on my part) stop breathing at night? ...ie have sleep apnea.

Own your snoring mate!!!

Investigate the whys. Lose weight if that is the issue, get your nose bored out if that is the issue. Get it looked at my professionals if you find yourself nodding off to sleep at odd times during the day. Sleep apneoa (sp?) is no joke, the delay in taking a breath creates an enormous snore, and can kill you to boot! Go see a doc before you take any advice off here!

 That's my preferred method, although it is never received well! (In addition to the indignant "I was not!" ) How he can tell when he's asleep I'll never know... But wait it gets better. The dog sleeps on his bean bag beside the bed and there are nights when I get it from both the males in the room with me. Between the husband (a good kick is sometimes needed) and the dog (usually resort to growling the hell out of his name, which works btw) I'm then so awake I get out of bed and leave them to it. Once all is quiet again I go back to bed only to lie awake....sigh. Thankfully it's not every night or the only two sleeping in our room would be hubby and hound! (the dogs snoring is just as bad as hubby's)

According to my better half I snore rather loudly...

I've never considered it a problem myself - and neither does she. Why worry about it then?

On the other hand I've had some really funny situations because of it. Like falling asleep on trains, planes or buses - and just as I'm about to fall asleep properly I make a mighty snore and wake myself up... Funny as hell! Especially the embarrased looks on the faces around me looking everywhere but in my direction :2thumbsup

One thing to bear in mind as well is the impact of different sleeping positions. One tends to snore more when sleeping flat on the back as opposed to on the stomach or side.
My advice would be to see a doctor if it indeed IS a problem for you!

OK.... well this is my input!

It’s destructive enough to a relationship that you should look into it - the last thing you want is your partner being angry (and believe me at 3am in the morning it’s more emotional that rational) because they are being deprived of a basic human necessity.

Yup, loosing weight is a big part of the solution, however I would suggest going to see a doc – there may be something else causing it, that could be easily resolved…. So instead of looking at these turkeys on KB, go and get it looked at/sorted.

I once read that keeping you off your back is important, and heard that people have things sewed into their sleep shirt (like a tennis ball) that prevents you from falling asleep or turning over on to your back.

What Mrs Kendog says may sound bazaar, but a friend of ours says having his tonsils removed, reduced his snoring by 80%...

Go to the doc and have a chat…. Its important enough for you to find a resolution.

My wife had a real problem to the point where I either wore ear plugs or slept in a spare room. If 10 was the worst imaginable on a snoring scale, she would have been 8-9. Someone put us onto: http://www.snore-op.com/ and she went to the Tauranga branch for assessment and treatment. It involves "burning" the soft palate with a radio frequency probe to tighten the skin up and stop it flapping (a common cause of snoring). Sounds horrible but only gave her a slightly sore throat for a day. I'd assess her snoring as less than 3 now so we're all happy campers. Cost? About $200 per treatment from memory and she had 2.

So once again, best to see the Doc and get the cause diagnosed, and then voila! peaceful sleep, for all.... not just you

So when is the doctors appointment?

There must have been reason for asking the question, you got lots of answers, seeing the doc when?

FWIW.. does not matter how you position your body, if you snore you snore, I forced myself to sleep on my tummy (apparently it's impossible to snore that way)

I had my turbinates cauterised when I was 12. Made a world of difference to permanently obstructed sinuses. I take it you've investigated all such options with an ENT specialist?

I went to see an ENT specialist as I have ongoing sinus problems and apparently I snore. I don't think it's a problem but my wife is very insistant that it is my problem....

Dan, this might help you:

After going to the specialist I'm now in the 'thinking about whether I actually want the nice man to ram his tools up my nose and cut the inside of my head apart' stage.

Basically, what he intends to do is chop away the turbinates (big lumps of flesh inside your nose that can swell up and block the nasal passages), and straighten up my septum (the boney bit in the middle of your nose, which is crooked a bit further back in my head). That should sort out the sinuses and breathing.

For an encore, he also, wants to chop a bit of length off the bit of flesh that hangs down the back of your throat where your windpipe splits (where one half goes through your nose and the other through your mouth). Mine is apparently very long, and flaps about on my windpipe like a towel on a washing line in a strong breeze. This is apparently what is causing the snoring.

It's a GA op, all sone at once. You spend the night in hospital under observation and then a week off work in considerable pain/doped to the eyeballs/eating through a straw/breathing through your mouth only.

If none of that sounds appealing, you could give a decongestant spray a crack. Get one from the chemist. I usually give myself a squirt just before bed, and it helps free up the sinuses.

Definitely go see an ENT. I would highly recommend Dr Donn in Rotorua, after lots of appointments with other doctors and LOADS of tests, he was the first person to figure out exactly what was wrong with me

Snoring can be caused by Polyps, which are caused by allergies. If that is what you have, It is an endoscopic surgery (meaning they don't cut the seeable skin) and a night in the hospital.

Took lots of tests and blood trials until I was sent to Dr Donn as no one could figure it out, I had stumped every one in Taupo lol.

Couldn't recommend an ENT enough... It might cost a bit more for an appointment, but trust me... Compared to the countless tests doctors can run you through... It is very likely to work out cheaper in the long run.

Having the surgery has completely changed my life and I no longer snore :2thumbsup:banana:
