Thought I'd sound you guys out about the EFI computer mapping on my 2001 BMW F650. Have been experiencing some 'lumpiness', almost as if about to run out of fuel, on the Beemer at 3000-3500 rpm, and also at approx 4200rpm when under light load/cruising.

Is this 'lumpiness' actually the 'surging' in earlier models that I've heard about?

Have read a number of articles that suggest upgrading the computer software to v10.1 to resolve this, but was wondering if anybody here had already been down this path? Does it really result in improvements on the old mapping?

Keen also to understand how happy the NZ BMW dealers have been to do the work.

Any experiences you are willing to share?

Much appreciated.

My '01 had great midrange fuelling. The bike was known to BMW NZ and I was told by them that the previous owner had the later map uploaded during a regular service.

I'm no BMW guru but when me mate got the new tune uploaded onto his Dakar it made a big positive difference.

Cheers

Hmm, nice thought - might look into it now that Motorad are out of the running. Might also be a good excuse for spin over to Nelson and around the sounds...hmmmm...

Oh dear, the mystery is now beginning to deepen!

Have been surfing the web for info on the BMS for my Beemer tonight - just want to understand if the software needs upgrading. Checked out , and found a useful table of software variants... ....but it seems to raise more questions...

Can easily find my bike on the list, F650 GS DAKAR - easy! Can even match the VIN (0173)..but... ....when I try to match the part number for the BMS on my bike to the table/VIN I run into problems. I can find 2 references my BMS for 7655705, which the table says is the part number for US DAKAR.

The table says that bike version 0173 is supposed to carry BMS part number 7668133, but I can find no reference to this on my BMS.

A previous owner/tech has written "8000" on my BMS which matches the latest software version v10.1.

So... ...on the surface it seems I might have an NZ bike with a US BMS unit, that is loaded with the latest software version?

However, the number in the largest print on my BMS also suggests that I have BMS part 7662070, but... ...I can find no reference anywhere to a BMS 7662070, adding to the mystery?

Checking the idle speed (old s/w = 1300-1400rpm; new s/w = 1500rpm) mine is idling at 1800rpm, and seems thirsty by about 10-20% compared to mates Dakars.

What's the verdict? Do you reckon it sounds right? Head is in a right spin now!!

What fuel do you use. I have the same problem you describe when using Shell or BP (98). I stick to caltex and do not have the problem.

Been using 95 for the last couple of fills, but have recently read about delayed detonation in higher octane fuels causing an issue. Read on faq.f650 that you should use the lowest RON recommended in in engines not reliant upon high compression rates. Have run tank down and will be looking to fill up on 91 next time and test the results.

Will be away for the next couple of weeks with the bike so will be a good test - will post the results when I get back.

What?

Mine definitley runs better on 91 than 95.
Cheaper, too.

Well, back home now and can confirm that yes, 91 is better for the bike. Improved economy too at 4.2l per 100k (67mpg). much happy now, but always am after a ride!

Mine idles at 1500 and I still haven't experienced the surge stalll pain. However, I recently jumped on a dakar 2003 twinspark and although they both reved at 1500, mine has less engine breaking power (ie, it takes longer for the revs to drop down once you cut the throttle).

I've asked Sebastian (the beeMer tech dude at auckland BMWs) and the latest software cures all the above, so I may go get an upgrade (one must have some sort of engine breaking power huh!!!).

BTW, I use 98 octane fuel and definitely get more grunt at low revs which is nice for easily breaking the rear wheel off when offroad. I noticed a huge difference with this compared to using 91 (same road and same rear tyre).

One more thing, on a 17 lts tank the difference between 91 and 98 is less than $2 so... what the hell go for 98!

enjoy your extinct dakar :niceone:
