View Full Version : Side stand interlock switch issues???

Im having some problems with my GSX at the moment.

For some reason it wont start in neutral with the side stand down. Which as everyone knows, and the manual states, it should.

However, it only does this if the bike is warm, ie has been used in the last hour or so, or has just been turned off etc. Which means its not a problem getting it started first thing in the morning.

Another problem accompaning this is the fact that when it wont start in neutral with the side stand down, the neutral light isnt working either (It only doesnt work when the bikes warm). Now I know if its in neutral; (not only does the bike have a gear indicator but ive had it for a year now and know when its in neutral just by the feel of the gearbox when I click it in)

Im thinking, by the way things are going wrong when the bike is warm, that it might be related to the temperature of something. (I'm useless mechanically, but you never know)

Ive got a new side stand interlock switch being sent in to my usual bike shop but I though I might as well see what everyone else thinks before I get it put in.

Would the new switch solve the problem or could it be something else?

Has anyone else had similar problems and what ended up being the solution?

ok so the neutral indicator doesn't work. Ohh, erm at this stage I'd have to say I don't know what the gear indicator works off.

I was going to say fix the neutral indicator first. Check the bulb but first check the sprocket sidecover. There is a wire that runs to the neutral sensor by the front sprocket. If this is crimped/broken then it will not earth to the contact on the shift drum (completing the cct to the bulb & hence the "am I in neutral" cct). The warm issue may be it expands/contracts & loses contact enough to stop working.

Im not sure if this will help anyone, but I thought I might as well stick up the wiring diagram.

Looks like I might take it into another shop to have a second look at it.

From what you have described I tend to agree with F5 Dave, the plug contacts could be expanding with the heat and losing contact.

Check the pins on the side stand switch plug.
Also if the lamp for the neutral light is working it may be the side stand diode that is causing the problem. They can be checked easily enough with a standard multimeter on diode scale. (They should show a short, very low ohms, in one direction and open in the opposite, there are two, between Green and Brown and between Green and Blue with Black tracer)

Hope this helps
