View Full Version : 10 reasons why you can't beat Wellington even on a windy day

Sully60

I'm not ashamed to say I'm a real Wellington man. I love this place despite the wind and the sometimes cooler climate. But in my opinion this just adds to what it takes to be a Wellingtonian.
I really do feel sorry for everyone one else in this fine country that doesn't live in a place where the geography doesn't lend itself to what you'll see in the following photos.
I'm no photographer (I ain't a photograhers asshole) but I know what I like.
None of the following have been altered in any way and all have been taken with a fairly inexpensive digital camera with no lense effects or filters.
So please have a look at what I've managed to capture from just outside our lounge (apart form the ones from the top of Mt Kau Kau, gotta love doing work for BCL He he!)

5-8 of 10.......

BTW if your keen on the fullsized versions just PM me like I said I'm not a photograoher so I don't care about IP or anything heavy like that

Sully60

9 and 10.........
As someone who watches the weather I never get sick of what happens here in the Welly (apart form those pesky localised northerlies that spill all that low level oregraphic cloud of the top of Colonial Knob and chill the hottest summer day unitil you need a jersey!)
The Southwesters produce the best photo's from this wee collection. The mountains of the Nelson lakes and Marlborough region produce the most phenomenal lenticular cloud formations and if you catch them at the right time the results are stunning.

Having lived in Auckland, Wellington, Palmy North, Hamilton, welly is by far the best of those cities.

Welly even more so. Really enjoyed my 2 days there on the way to / from the south island, and our company has plenty of job opportunities in the area so I'm seriously considering moving down there.

We did some consulting to the Earthquake Commission a fews years back. We diplomatically pointed out that they are in the risk business and their head office was in a tall building on reclaimed land in a city just waiting for the big one. :sweatdrop

Yes about that, Auckland is only joined to the rest of the Nth Island thanks to 52 Volcanoes. There's no such thing as a dormant or extinct volcano either.

There's a few tall buildings down the end of Queen St on reclaimed land too.

Wellington is only joined to the North Island because Auckland said it could.

All the tall buildings down the end of Queen St are mainly Insurance Co's and Banks. In the event of a major earthquake, this is a good thing.

Gorgeous photos!
I was born in the 'Naki, moved to HB and absolutely love this little corner of the world, but, no doubt about it Wellington is a stunning city, and unlike Auckland, has character, depth, and culture.
Auckland is like a brash spoiled teenager, all piss and wind....with apologies to Aucklanders, of course!

Wellington is teh awesome, Auckland is teh suck

They're just locations, you know. Places.

What is it that you don't like about Auckland?

The traffic is a usual complaint, but it becomes meaningless when one is on two wheels.

So, that aside... what don't you like about Auckland?

Where do I start?
It's too big and sprawling, New York is awesome, you can walk around that city...wouldn't want to do that in Aucks.
The weather, it rains heaps and when its not raining , it's about to.
It's humid.
It's full of people who have forgotten that they are human, forgotten how to smile.
The traffic.
The stress.
The ethnic demographic.
Shopping malls.
Prepay petrol pumps.
Remuera tractors.
Tui is more expensive than here.
Motorways.
Cheesecutters.

Is that enough to be going on with?

Sure there are some nice things about Auckland.
Specifically, the view in your rear view mirrors as you head out of town....:bleh:

If Wgtn is the arse, then the Hutt is the genitals, full of carnt's and pricks, but at least the pricks have balls.

But, I'm sure I read that Welly does rate higher than Auck in the tourist stakes (I could be wrong).

Screw commuting in congested traffic - I'm 8 minutes from home to work down here.

And, it's a well known fact that all the fast bikers come from Welly.:Punk:

The weather, it rains heaps and when its not raining , it's about to.

Rubbish.

Rainfall data from the NIWA website (http://www.niwascience.co.nz/edu/resources/climate/meanrain), in fact, shows that over the period from 1971 to 2000, Wellington received slightly more rain (on average, annually) than Auckland.

So... why do you think it rains more in Auckland when it actually... doesn't?

It's full of people who have forgotten that they are human, forgotten how to smile.

That's pure bollocks. You're just parroting tired old lines about big cities. People are people wherever you go.

The traffic.

Two wheels move the soul! :D

The stress.

If you're stressed, don't blame the place you live in... I ain't stressed... :p

The ethnic demographic.

Racist!

Shopping malls.

Yes, it sucks how you're forced to go into them...

Prepay petrol pumps.

I haven't prepaid for a tank of gas in months.

Motorways.

Wellington doesn't have motorways?

To be honest, it strikes me as mean-spirited and pointless to rubbish one town in New Zealand over another. In my experience, when done in seriousness, it's an indicator of a rather unpleasantly smallminded approach to life...

However, I'd prefer everyone to just share the love about this beautiful country we're lucky enough to live in, instead of sniping in very silly fashion regarding perceived shortcomings of one city versus another.

Auckland and Wellington are only an afternoon's ride apart, fer chrissakes! This is not an L.A. vs NYC argument.

Boys and girls....liking, or otherwise, a town seems to be determined in part by where one lives. Anyone who really likes a place would surely want to live there? And vikkiverki.
The reason we like HB is equally valid and related to the reasons for not liking (say) Aucks.
In saying that, personally I like visiting Aucks but I'm always glad to leave. If the nice people we know in Aucks shifted here, then HB would be ThaPerfectPlace...

Depends on your definition of "all" and "land". Rongotai wasn't there 165 years ago. Then there was a really big earthquake and it suddenly was.

There was an aerodrome on site well before the airport was built. The current runway is raised and extended compared to what was there in the 1940s.

Only a little bit at the Cook Strait end.

Actually no, the original aerodrome was where the golf course is now. The top was taken off the hill that was beside Calabar Rd/Wexford Rd to allow a flat stretch of land. Broadway ran from the Seatoun tunnel through to connect with Coutts St in Kilbirnie. The resulting fill was used to stabilise the causeway that ran beside the Power station that is now the Kilbirnie Fire Station and created Cobham Drive.

Thus endeth the first lesson :2thumbsup

You are quite correct, I jumped too quick. I attended Rongotai college and lived less than a kilometre from the airport and observed all the earth works and the continual layer of dust that lasted several years. Good spotting that man.:apint:

Try to express them, then, in a way that conveys their inward focus and lack of rationality, so that it becomes obvious that refutation is unnecessary.

Prefixing each post with "This is pure bollocks, but..." would be a great start.

Leaky homes aren't that bad. Let's see...

1) Sell the house from the Trust to my personal name (at a huge loss) Nice tax credit. Thanks Jim.

2) Get house fixed to a better standard, quality and look than it was originally - all at the tax payers expense. Thanks Jim.

3) Claim stress, interest, legal fees, moving expenses and horrendous rent (while at another house that my Trust owns) All at the tax payers expense. Thanks Jim

4) Sell what is basically a new, better house at the end of all this at a huge profit with no capital gains tax, all paid for by the tax payer. Thanks Jim.

Shhhhh. This is KB.

Hey, Galbraiths are brewing a 'summer ale' at the moment. Anyone keen to meet up there and try some this weekend?

Nothing, why? Calcutta would look "pretty" at 5 in the morning. The smog makes for an excellent sunrise.

Yeah, top of Mt Eden Rd, near the Symonds St intersection. Dark green building with pillary architectural wossnames out the front. It says 'Galbraiths'. Hard to miss, really.

That is cool!

It is, isn't it? Big Dave is a true artist...He actually got an award for this work and it is so very deserved.

But yes, for me Auckland is very much about the way it looks from the North Shore going into the city.

I am a country girl at heart, and I don't really enjoy living in Auckland, but there are true moments of beauty that just take your breath away sometime...

If I was a bloke and you were single, I'd ask you to marry me...

Oh , gee, we are soooo going to have fun when we actually meet...if you were a bloke, I might say yes...or maybe...

Try to express them, then, in a way that conveys their inward focus and lack of rationality, so that it becomes obvious that refutation is unnecessary.

Prefixing each post with "This is pure bollocks, but..." would be a great start.
Since I offered my opinion, and it was clearly my opinion, I didn't think that it needed any prefix. Sorry, my bad, will try in future, to be far less obtuse.

If I were a woman and... no, wait. If I was a woman, I, um, and you were a woman? Or if yungatart was a bloke, perhaps? And I was too? Would that make you gay, or her straight?

Sexuality is so confusing.

:(

I'm not confused, I am woman and my sexuality is my business....for me to know, and for you to...only guess at:baby:

Oh, and beef wellington. Wasn't half bad either...

Thanks Jim.

Keep working hard Jim, I appreciate it mate.

When you tax supports so many losers as it is, whats one more?

I did hear a small, whiny, insigificant and ill informed reference to stormcoulds.
I'll show you stormclouds!

Edit: Although I did try to capture this particularly memorable storm (Tried that thing from the Pearl Jam song Nothing man. Thats the last time I listen to them!) I can't take credit for these ones.

RNZAF base on the western side of the runway, looking out across the straight towards the south island.

Isn't half of Te Atatu?

Every time we have a big one we get more land. We need a big one so we can have a longer runway and get the big planes.

No we bloody don't!!!!!!!! :Oi:

bigger planes would spoil my view from the lounge.
