my boy is 5 nealy 6 i bought him a ttr50 for his first 2 wheeler and i am wondering whether he needs an upgrade.
he hasn't had his ttr long but he rides it every where in third and flies around tracks on mates farms and the one we have on our property through the pines.
im not sure whether to leave him on the ttr and just keep getting faster or get something like a ktm 50.
i know there is alot different ktmn 50s and also the 65s .
he has really advanced alot with a few tips from good riders ( not me)
he just seems to lack the snap out of corners and over jumps.
any help appreciated.

dont give him ideas.
the other day we were at a frinds and he has a small gap double and i saw luke hit it full steam ahead but went straight into the face on the landing jump.
he got a little hurt and then just said to me "bet i could do it on your bike dad"
what could i say to that.
haha

I know bugger all about little peoples bikes but go back to my own first bike which when i was 8 was a Honda SL125,plenty of mates have bought there young uns bikes and compared to the 125 i had there bloody tiny and have often wondered why they start them with such small bikes although can fully understand in this case as your wee guy is only 5.Kawasaki used to make a KX 80 small wheel/big wheel option, often thought that if other than wheels/gearing there the same that they would be a great option for a youngster.

KTm50's are great race bikes, but they are a nightmare to keep maintained, they are worse than the 65's, the auto clutches are the main problem,

i would keep him on the TTR for a bit longer, if you want to get him into a 65, wait till he is about 7, and he can touch the ground, then he will learn to use the clutch etc,

Logical progresion is to a Polini/Ktm50 if he is going to do mini moto x etc.
The 65 is a further big step up and after a year or so he will be ready to move forward.
You will be amazed as well as concerned as to how fast the little buggers get going on these bikes.

As far as the clutch is concerned well... regular, and I mean after every race, change the oil and every second ride remove and clean the washers. It doesn't take long just a pain in the behind. Well worth it tho

A KX80 small wheel is going to be too big and fearsome for a 6 year old. Definately good bikes though, my old '95 model with road tyres was the most fun bike I've ever ridden (and I've got to ride a fair few bikes now).
