View Full Version : Why does...

I learn't a very good lesson this morning on my way to work. And that is, to "properly" warm up your bike before departing. I was late and only warmed it up for like 2 minutes instead of 4-5. And 5 mins down the road my bike started to act like it was running out of fuel and came to a dead stop as i pulled to the left and went down through the gears. The first indication was when i was doing 100kph's it had a surge and loss of power effect brielfy before getting worse and i had to stop.

It wouldnt restart, and there i was already 15mins late for work. Eventually i got my bike going again, and decided (because of recent sparkplug problems which i got fixed at the bike shop) to ride back home to be on the safe side. Only the bike did the same thing again down the road, and several times after til i got home.

So i had a good work out of kick starting and pushing before even starting work, i was sweating like a pig.

Getting to the point, why does a bike perform like this when its not warmed up properly? It seemed normal until 3-4 mins into the ride.
And why did it continue like it did, even though it eventually got hot?

I came back from work early, and took her for a spin again to see if the problem was still there, and the bike performed fine, over 30mins of riding. No power loss or complaint from the bike.

This is the only 2nd time ive had this problem from not giving it enough warm up time, last time was ages ago. I should of realised this earlier, but since i only got it back from the shop the other day i thought it was related to the sparkplug prob i had or a perhaps a blocked fuel line.

The other question i have is, i have twin exhaust pipes, and one gives more smoke/exhaust the other.
Is this normal for a 2stroke? and how can i correct it, can/would it make a difference in performance?

Cheers

I would suggest checking the oil lines from the oil pump that feed into the cylinders - particularly the cylinder that isn't smoking as much as the other. It sounds like you may have suffered a cold siezure.

Yes it'll smoke more from one pipe (the top one iirc). Just rape it when it's warm, but it should only take a few minutes warming before you ride it if you're nice to it. You should pretty much be able to ride it straight from cold with a little choke. I'd give it a birthday and fit some new plugs.

/edit: When warm, neither pipe should pass much visible smoke, a little, but nothing exceptional, and certainly nothing like when it's cold.
