View Full Version : Hawkes Bay: Dannevirke to Te Awanga 05/01/08
NZsarge
22nd December 2007, 21:35
1st meeting point Dannevirke BP (fuel up here) at 9:45am depart 10:00(ish) head out to Wimbledon stop there for the obligatory ciggie break, spell and yarn.
On to Patangata for the next break unless some people feel they wont make Havelock North (via Te Awanga) on the fuel they have left then we can stop at Waipukarau instead of Patangata and fuel there.
On to Te Awanga via Elsthorpe and the back of Te Mata peak, stop at the Clifton cafe for a bite, great view and coffee and food.
To Havelock North for fuel and down Middle road to Patangata for a spell and perhaps refreshments.
Back to Dannevirke BP via Hatuma, Takapau, Ormondville and Matamau.
This will be a relaxed and laid back scene and will take some time so be prepared for that.
I am more than willing to consider any changes to this if anyone puts something foward and there is general consensus that it's a better way to go....NO GRAVEL!!
The date is also open to debate as i've just plucked this out of thin air as maybe do-able for most people.
Please, if you are solidly interested in doing this ride, go to the calendar and register yourself as we may need to a booking at the Clifton cafe of consider something else for lunch.
Ideas?? Bring it on!

I could be into that. I'm only 45mins from Dannevirke on HW50 anyway.
My folks live in Te Awanga too, and I also grew up in that area.
Sounds like a good day ride.
The cafe at Clifton is always full on that time of year.

Yes good point, might have to amend this or maybe do a booking but I would need some fairly solid number for that.
Drag a few of ya mates from up that way down with ya.

hmmm.....:scratch:will have to give that a little thought, maybe a mid week ride unless there was some others interested that could only do the weekend.
Then I guess it would be either the 2nd or the weekend of the 12th.(January)
I'll ponder this, I know one other at least that would be interested.
Tell ya what though, if i'm organizing it there wont be any 200k plus stints without a break, please, no offence to the guys who organized the last Forgotten World highway ride but i'm just not into that.

Awwwwww c'mon man, now you've got ya new horse you should be dead keen...
Seriously though, we never did 200k's in one stint that day. Longest leg without a break: Wanganui to Stratford (yawn).
Also, before you go setting up another ride thru the Forgotten Highway, don't forget the Chateau - Plateau ride on the 27th.

No worries, had a decent ride on it today, went really well I thought.
It's not perfect but better resolved than what I was riding as you may well expect.
There are a couple of things I may change over time but nothing that cant wait.
