View Full Version : 2 finger salute to the non-wavers

:disapint: Ok, I know I'm only riding a 250 and its a cruiser style at that, but is that any reason for other bikers not to acknowledge a wave from a fellow bikie on the road. I decided to head down the motorway, SH22, Kaiau, Kawakawa Bay route today. Stopped at Papakura Autobahn and got a few looks down the nose from other bikers when filling up, so feeling suitably small decided not to approach any of the groups hanging around. I'm pretty shy anyway around new people, so this may have just been my perception. Went off on my way and had 2 people wave to me on the whole ride. I lost count of how many refused to acknowledge my wave as we passed - and only one rider was on a BMW! So to all of those out there on sports bikes, don't be rude. I may be on a 250 now, but that's all going to change soon. The one thing I've always loved about riding is the general camaraderie, so I was a bit put out at the lack of it out there today.
For all those non-wavers, this is for you: :finger:

This seems to be a problem with sports bike riders I've noticed - they all profess to wave to everybody...but unfortunatly they really mean,'I wave to everyone on a sports bike' Ride a lower form of two wheel transport and you'll be ignored by the sports bikes.

i always try to wave, but remeber that sometimes its harder to wave when you have ridden anymore than 100k and you have no feeling below your elbows!

i find overall that it really depends on where you are. i find that wellington riders wave more than aucklanders, not sure why? their maybe too many "born agains"around your way who have forgotten thier manners.

I dont think it is about your bike. But if youre a BAB, and over forty, like me, your reflexes arent good enough to handle a curve and letting go of one of the handlebars! I like leaving it to the last second to wave at folks on Harleys (who almost always wave at RA n me and Im the only one onna cruiser) cos they do this lil "oops panic!" swerve lettin go to wave back. :msn-wink:

Well I was out today we went out Clevedon and then down to Miranda, (hmm thats a nice ride.) I waved or nodded at everyone I saw, only one didnt wave back. But when we parked up, its funny whose bike out of the group I was riding with gets all the attention. IT WASNT MINE. It was the bright yellow 749 Duc, lololol. They seem to draw people in. I really wouldnt worry about it. Just wave at everyone. :ride:

Came up behind an old crapper tootling up a hill last sunday and gave a wave as I went past.
He didn't wave back :confused2
Then saw he only had one arm - the left one :shit:

Now that would make a bike difficult to ride for any length of time.
Still you must get used to it.

I occasionally wave, but mostly I just nod. I think commuting people are less likely to wave because of the traffic and just using their bike for transport, than say if they were on a weekend ride.

Hi RR, did not see you at AB yesterday, I don,t think any of us would have been looking down our noses at you, many riders in our groups ride 250s, You would have be made to feel welcome had you came over to our group, we were up way from the gas station , just about opps Mc Donalds.

About the waving thing, despite what our resident grouch from Carr rd thinks, most of us do wave at all bikes, the only exception is if the conditions at the time don,t warrant it. I wave when I comute on the southen M/way not many wave back, but , hey WGAF. Don,t be put off, come and say gidday next time...........have sent you a pm.

Hey Riff Raff, fair go mate, most people wouldn't even know what size bike your on.Folks just go about their business and most of the time arn't thinking about getting a wave anyway, their just doing their thing.
If you were to have a yarn with most of these people you think are snobbing you,you would find that 95% are good people that have no problem with what you ride. This topic comes up a lot an the fact is, most if not all of these people will give you a hand if you really need it.
Don't sweat the small stuff man, life's to short as it is.

Thanks everyone for your replies. This thread was started off in the great state of piseddoffifness, which means rationality probably didn't come into it. I guess I just couldn't believe how many had trouble either waving or nodding on the straight bits with plenty of time to acknowledge my friendly greeting. But in reality it's not a biggie. At least we were all out there enjoying a bloody gorgeous day for riding. And they were probably in a tranceful state of blissfulness, singing 'The hills are alive with the sound of music' or something!!

I even wave at scooters -- but most scooter riders don't get it!

Sportsbike riders don't wave because their luminous squid suits are too tight and their wrists have locked in place on their ludicrously-low clip-ons.

Harley riders... Have you ridden one? The thing's alive! Let go for second and it will throw you.

Goldwing riders can't always, in the heat of the moment, find the "auto wave back" button.

If your hands are full, there's always the chin-down nod...

Well, even though this goes against the stereotypes I wave to every 2 wheeler on the open road. Sometimes if I am mid corner etc I can't wave but try to acknowledge the rider. In town I sometimes do, depending on the traffic etc. Used to do it to scooter riders aswell, but not anymore. Agree with hitcher, don't think they know what its about.

Actually Jazbug and I (we both ride 250's) have a funny story from when we were riding back from Tokaanu. Her & I were (just a little) behind the others that we rode with and we found that there were a few riders that wouldn't wave to us. After about the 3rd group we were doing hand signals to each other to indicate our displeasure at being snobbed. Jazbug would do :tugger: and myself :finger: , well we rode past 2 sports bike riders going the other way and no wave or nod. I immediately proceed to flick the bird not having noticed the :Police: following them - he didn't turned around, I'm not sure that he even noticed me. We both pissed ourselves laughing when we stopped.

I'm kinda over the whole they do & they don't wave. I wave & don't care if others do or don't, although it definitely gives me a buzz when they do. :)

Surely it's not true that sportbike riders can't wave because they're staring at the front wheel and if they took a hand off the bars they'd go into a terminal death slapper.

It's an elite club - you wouldn't understand,we form a bond for life, exchange CDI units and promise to hoard our parts and never help another biker in trouble.Owning one of these does that to you, selfish I know...but we have our reasons.

I wave to everyone and i'm on a scooter. my measure of a real bikie is if they WAVE BACK.
if theyre too much of a snob to acknowledge a little sister on two wheels then theyre not even worth my time as a scooter rider and they arent real bikies! :headbang:

So to all of those out there on sports bikes, don't be rude. I may be on a 250 now, but that's all going to change soon. The one thing I've always loved about riding is the general camaraderie, so I was a bit put out at the lack of it out there today.
For all those non-wavers, this is for you: :finger:Well, if we're out'n'about, you'll most likely get two waves!:spudwave: :spudwave:

There their can be a few snobs out there. They're not KB members though, I'm sure. Right Guys?? Well... it does make a difference reading threads like this, to make you more aware.
I waved at a 250 rider recently, and they snobbed me. Maybe my bike was too sporty? :spudwhat:

I tend to think of waving when it's a nice sunny day in the weekend.... but not so much, when it's drizzling on the way to work

When I first got into bikes back in the 70's the only bikers that didnt wave back were the so called "Bikies" who basically hated Japanese bikes. Now that I've been back into bikes since the late 90's the main thing I've noticed is that hardly any biker waves back, no matter what they ride. Is this because the descendents of the "Bikies" have to ride Japanese etc and don't want anyone to know its them?
Cheers,Motig :apint:

If unable to wave, then a nod will suffice - surely

I always wave at any type of bike - even scooters/dirt bikes, though if mid-corner will usually nod instead.

Most bikes wave back, if not it's their loss, not mine.

I usually wave at cars towing bikes on a trailer also.

Saw 2 beemers last nite heading in to town.... they were holding up traffic all the way from pi-coc town to the passing lanes after pukerua bay..... waved as i went past.... dunno whether they waved, hard to tell at hundred an sumfin when your mirrors are vibrating.
dunno why I waved, should have told them what the speed limit was!
NOT 60!!!!!

yep fair enough, but a head nod is good for me too..... if im in a situation where i need both hands on the bars, i usually give a bit of a nod......

Ditto here two smoker. Ill always either wave or nod. I may be on a small, semi sports bike bike I still take time out to wave at others. Besides, it gets lonley riding by yourself, so I appriciate waves from other bikies.

I dont mind harleys, some are good enough to wave, to the others I have to say,

Does your shit smell sweeter than the rest?? :moon:

I suppose it can be because you wave at them as well? It could also be that you only have 2 wheels on the road, same as them, I try wave at every bike.

I dont hold grudges but I do appriciate a wave. :spudwhat: :thud:

No,I don't hold grudges,I don't care at all - I've been riding for quite sometime,we didn't used to wave...so I still don't.But I get a bit of a sore throat trying to swallow all this goodwill to other riders when my experiance out there is somewhat different....and I don't back down,I'll be in every thread about waving with a contrary view - keep em coming!

Up here in northland all the bikes I have passed I've waved to and have always got a nod or wave back. Must have something to do with the relaxed ways up here.

Fair enough. We all have our valid opinions. Ill still wave while others may not. I dont hold it against them, its all in personal preference

Yeah? well this 'show pony' doesn't wave to dirt bike types 'cos most of them don't have a licence, rego, w.o.f., no. plate and their riding style gives us decent riders a bad name. :ar15:

Yep it dont matter whether they be gang boys... or the person riding a bike to pick up the rubbish, even the motorbike posties get a wave.... sports or tourers and cruisers. I wave or nod to everyone, even the police or ambulance boys on bikes. Afterall we are all riders out there :ride:

I mostly wave, but occassionally I will nod depending on where I am.... :ride:

Sometimes I dont get acknowledged back..... but maybe they didnt see me and maybe they were in a situation where they couldn't..... :confused2

Heck even the gang boys wave back.... not all of them wave back it depends again on how many there are together in a pack. :scooter:

Most sports bikes wave back..... but then cos they are going so fast ( I find that sports bike riders like to go really really fast) that they probably don't see us mere mortals. :scooter:

But they dont wave back........ but thats ok.... :confused2

If a bike is coming up from behind me, and I cant wave to them..... I will stick my foot out to acknowledge them as well... so its another way to say hi.... :) as they go past they usually wave or nod back.
