View Full Version : Auckland: 03/01/2008 - First 250 ride of the year

discotex
23rd December 2007, 09:35
Been thinking of organising a 250 ride for a while now and figured there's no time like the present.

Meeting

10am at Shell Westgate (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=shell&near=Massey+North,+Auckland,+New+Zealand&ie=UTF8&ll=-36.808872,174.628201&spn=0.060885,0.11673&z=13&iwloc=A&om=1) planning to leave by 10:30am.

If you're planning to get gas when you arrive please don't turn up at 10:30 ;)

Destination

Shelly Beach for lunch time fish and chips. Route on the day or PM me.

Is this the ride for you?

This is a ride for 6L and 6R riders who already have some open road experience. We will be travelling at the speed limit and you need to be comfortable at 100-110km/h.

This is NOT, I repeat, NOT the ride for you if this is your first time on the open road.

It is also NOT the ride for you if you want to fang it like Sofuoglu. If you want to you're welcome to leave early and meet us there for lunch though.

Those on bigger bikes are welcome if you are happy to stick to the slower pace or head off early.

Please register your attendance on the calendar entry (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1515&day=2008-1-3&c=1) so I can plan for numbers.

huh?

One thing to take into account is that it's mental driver season so if you're not confident on the open road this probably isn't the time to get experience. That said, if you're comfortable at open road speed and have had one or two longer rides I'm sure you an handle this ride - it was what i did on the first weekend I had my bike and it's easily doable with a bit of confidence (not too much) and a fair amount of knowledge on open road riding (cornering, reading the road conditions etc.).

DT - I'm happy to lead a slower group if required but slow still equals 90 - 100km/h comfortably on the open road.

See you there!

Lots of motorway riding at 100km/h plus twice on the open road would probably be ok.

Just from reading your bin thread I think giving it a miss might be a good call until you've done some more km with just one or two riders. I'd be happy to take you out separately when I'm around town if you like.

Contrary to popular opinion it's not a sin to take it easy and warm into it :)

Back at work on the 3rd? Man that sucks  There should be a law against people going back to work that early!

Yep that's exactly why this isn't a newbie 250 ride. I won't be caning it by any stretch of the imagination but I can't speak for the other people using the road.

The Monday/Wednesday rides/carpark sessions (or a mentor once the program is back up and running) are the perfect place to get up to speed (no pun intended) for rides like this.

Will see how the numbers pan out and the experience levels and make a call on breaking up on the day. If there's heaps I'd like to do bunches of 4-6 riders.

If the weather looks hit and miss I'll confirm 100% that it's on first thing in the morning.

Having read of your misadventures of late, and not knowing you from a bar of soap, I was a tad apprehensive to be immediately in front / behind you on Saturday. I'm no Rossi and don't pretend to be, and I don't have that much open road or group experience, but I will say for the group here that I thought you did a fine job considering your confidence must be zero at the moment. Good in a straight line, easy on the corners, not much wrong with that. After following you for a couple of hours, I don't know how you have put it down the road so many times. Must be bad luck or summit? Hell, the only thing you did wrong in 5 hours of riding was flood your bike on the forecourt trying to start it up! If you've got everything else sorted and that's your only problem, you'll be fine.

I say come along. Most of the time on Saturday we were doing 85-95kph, and there was minimal traffic and on back roads. This ride will probably have more traffic and may be on more populated roads, so chances of doing 100-110kph could well be slim unless your keen. If you don't feel comfortable doing 100kph ( plus you got an L plate showing ) I don't mind hanging back doing 85 or whatever with you, cos I know how you feel cos I was there not too long ago, plus my bike starts to get to be hard work at 100+ after a while.

ZRXER on his 1300 beast hung back with me and looked out for me on my first group ride. I was very grateful to him for that cos he could have just gone with the other fast guys. That is the first and only time I have met him, but I will always remember him for that. Same this weekend just gone, Squiggles set a pace at the front which wasn't too hot, and Macstar ( especially, but everyone in general ) looked after us not so experienced guys at the back as TEC, so if your reading Stephen and Issac, thank you very much, I appreciate it a lot :first:. Funny thing is, on the group rides I have been on, afterwards I don't remember who the fast guys were or the big flash bikes, I remember the guys on big bikes who hung back and looked after the newer riders.

Yep we could well be doing 75km/h stuck behind a truck for all I know.

Yeah same. I remember Zapf leading me and a bunch of others on the way back from Kaiaua. He set a great pace and gave some great advice. Especially prior to the tightest bits with decreasing radius corners.

Don't forget to take your L plates off - 100kpm for 6L or 6R riders, seriously?

Sheesh.. Some people

6R riders don't wear an L plate and have no speed restriction.

I've yet to meet someone who was pulled over on an L plate at 100km/h and receive the $400 fine.

I've also yet to meet a 6L rider that adheres to the 70km/h restriction - organised ride or not.

Cops tend to ignore L plate riders riding safely at the speed limit. In fact most people seem to get pulled over for not wearing the plate on a small bike.

Much of the ride will be around 50-80km/h due to corners but we will be doing 100-110km/h on the straights. As I've already said if you're not up for that it's not the ride for you.

Macstar and I went put that way a while back and it had received a few repairs and had a few spots of fresh seal with a loose shingle in the centre, it was a while ago so should be all good by now

That side road down to Shelly Beach is pretty tight and narrow but usually has next to no traffic...perfect

No worries. The main things are:

a) ride your own ride - ride as if you just happened to find a bunch of other bikes on the road. Don't ride the same line or speed as the guy/gal in front as they may be more or less skilled than you.

b) we'll ride in a staggered formation when in built up areas and maybe on the straights.

Thanks for all the props everyone. :)

Contrary to what some might expect from someone riding a bike like mine I had a great time taking a more lesurely pace up there.

I struggled at first to pick a pace that was fast enough to give a little challenge but slow enough to be safe but I think it wasn't too far off. Really keen to hear if you found it too slow, too fast, too long, too short etc.

I could only really see the 5 or so riders directly behind me but from what I saw everyone was giving eachother room and riding their own pace. From what I heard it was the same the whole way through the pack.

I think having a few more experienced riders who were happy to cruise really helped settle things down. Was great to have you lot on bigger bikes along and helping with marking turns etc.

Big thanks to gunnyrob for being our last minute TEC and obstacle for taking the other way home. :first:

I'll try to get something up mid week if I can do another one next weekend. If it's saturday it might be an afternoon ride as I have somewhere to be at lunchtime. More info to come.

5th January 2008, 01:23
The bin was small and not due to excessive speed. The wheelie was safe and as appropriate and safe as can be expected and was a real good one :)
The ride was newbie, was conducted as such and very well organized. We all stayed together throughout the ride which indicates the pace was great, not one car was passed and even the experienced riders hung out at the back. The ride was always under speed limit. Everyone follwed safe distance rules and I just wish I had started out on something like this. I would offer anytime to help Dan on his newbie rides, this was by far the best one Ive ever been on/seen here or in the states.

Thanks Discotex and the other experienced guys and girl :) I think the pace was spot on, and the length was good too. Quite a lot of rides turn out to be quite long, what with regroups and then stopping for lunch and petrol etc etc, so it was really nice to go on a slightly shorter ride, but not feel it was too short to be a waste of time. I've been on rides and got to the lunch point and felt knackered and really want it to be the finish, not halfway!! So for me, that was the ideal length of ride, got home after it and still managed to get some odd jobs done around the house and yard. And a really nice spot you picked out for lunch :) I will certainly be watching out for future Discotex rides. Thanks to everyone for a nice day out.

I'd just like to re-thank Matt again for organising this ride, and also thanks to all who attended and help out when I fellded off ... :(

I'm pretty darn terrible with names so whoever it was that followed me back to Westgate via sh16, thanks heaps, needless to say I was a little hesitant getting back on ... let alone open road riding.

A quick update on the bike ... no major dmg, I am very lucky in that Holeshot had just wrecked a GN so was able to pick up parts at a reasonable price should be all sorted by the 18th (seems like an eternity to have the thing just sitting there but oh well ;))

I think one (of the many) things I learnt from this is the factory tires on a gn250 are really shit ... I'm replacing them asap ... especially that front one ... doesnt seem to need much encouragement at all to go for a slide ...

looking forward to more rides!

Well it wouldn't be a KB ride (250 or otherwise) without someone doing a a wheelie would it ;)

I think trump_lady summed it up pretty well though. The bin was pretty minor. I don't think I cracked 100 more than once the whole ride and sat on 90-95 for most of it. 10-15km/h over the posted speeds on the open road corners. I set the pace in the technical parts up to Shelly Beach pretty slow but maybe not slow enough.

Most importantly there was no unsafe passing and no tailgating. The riders I could see in my mirrors had a good 2-4 second gap as I'd asked for at the pre-ride briefing.

To be honest things went smoother than I could have imagined. I think if you were there you'd agree.

I would offer anytime to help Dan on his newbie rides, this was by far the best one Ive ever been on/seen here or in the states.

Dan? Matt more like :pinch:

Dan (obstacle) did help me out and especially by offering to shepherd doozy back down 16.

Given you've had a bit of experience that's a great compliment so I'll let you off on the name thing ;)

So for me, that was the ideal length of ride, got home after it and still managed to get some odd jobs done around the house and yard. And a really nice spot you picked out for lunch :) I will certainly be watching out for future Discotex rides. Thanks to everyone for a nice day out.

Good stuff. Sometimes a quick tootle is easier for people so I will try to mix it up. Will be hard to know ahead of time but I'll try to give a *rough* idea of length.

I'm pretty darn terrible with names so whoever it was that followed me back to Westgate via sh16, thanks heaps, needless to say I was a little hesitant getting back on ... let alone open road riding.

That would be Dan (obstacle). We just wanted to make sure you got home safely. You never know if the bike is damaged or your are concussed so it's not safe to let someone head off alone after a crash.

A quick update on the bike ... no major dmg, I am very lucky in that Holeshot had just wrecked a GN so was able to pick up parts at a reasonable price should be all sorted by the 18th (seems like an eternity to have the thing just sitting there but oh well ;))

That's good news. Could be a lot worse. Ask EJ about his Scorpio...

I think one (of the many) things I learnt from this is the factory tires on a gn250 are really shit ... I'm replacing them asap ... especially that front one ... doesnt seem to need much encouragement at all to go for a slide ...

Yeah they are a bit dodgy but should have coped with that corner. Would like to chat to you about what you remember happening etc when I'm back in Auckland and see if we can piece it all together.

Nah, she thanked me : you were just the guy organising it, i was clearly the personality.

Thanks to everybody who came on this ride. Glad the GN got home safely and can be repaired. It was great to meet you all and I look forward to riding with you again soon.
