just a reminder of the site rules to do with accidents
Discussing accidents:
1) If the incident resulted in death, no talking about the specifics of the accident should be discussed until after the funeral attribute thread is fine, however no specifics. There will however be a 24 hour blanket on all discussions of the subject, this will ensure all family has been informed etc. Then the tribute thread can be posted.
2) If the event involves serious injury, then any comments will be removed until after the Police have notified next of kin and the moderators have confirmation of this.
3) The Administrators and Moderators reserve the right to remove a thread.
4) Any non death or serious injury threads, so general “biker down” threads are OK, but moderators will keep a close eye on them. We request respect is kept in these discussions. Any non appropriate comments will be removed.
5) Any accident that happens at a public gathering is fair comment, subject to points 1 and 2.
6) Anybody who posts fiction or malicious speculation, will have their comment deleted and will receive strong censure from the Administrators or Senior Moderators of the site.

Sadly as with the recent deaths of bikers in Fairlie the one at fault is seldom the one to pay the price. Tourists are probably a small percentage guilty of "Offside" play on our roads but more newsworthy (like biker accidents). Mind you we could have them shot for intoducing giardia to our waterways?

RIP Shane.
I kinda feel sorry for the other guy too - until you lot have ridden a bike in another country, on the opposite side of the road, you can't have any idea how difficult it is to do it without screwing it up and riding off on the wrong side now and then. Particularly if you turn out of a side road, and there's no other traffic around to give you a clue...

RIP.
Agree with the difficulty in suddenly adjusting to the other - (feels) 'wrong' - side of the road. I do it quite a few times a year.
Actually easier on a bike than in a car and I find a heck of a lot easier when in a city - I always start and finish trips in a city when I can.
The one time I did not was when I first test-rode the big bike in very quiet rural Pennsylvania. With no traffic and nothing to 'clue me in' I rolled out of the bike shop (in a location much like the Taupo track - but even less traffic - and did a good (or I should say bad) 1/2km on the wrong side of the road - until I woke up to reality.
One of my friends swears by sticking a dayglo arrow and KEEP RIGHT on the screen of his rented US bikes. I tried this and it works well.

It's just that KBers are suffering from an acute irony deficiency and a less than adequate appreciation for sarcasm.
At least he didn't red you just because you redded him or something equally daft.

Most of the rental cars i transported while i was carting cars had fluro yellow keep left arrows on the instrument cluster, Great idea! Perhaps it could be a government could issue them to all tourists upon entry. Would work for cars, campers and bikes!

Tragic. Thoughts with the families involved, it must be awful for the surviving rider as well. Surely you can't walk away from being involved in a tragedy such as this without it having a profound effect on you as well (short of having no conscience whatsoever). Soppy sounding I know, but treasure your loved ones and cherish the time we're given to spend with them - you never know when it will come to an end.

Nonetheless if Jim starts shooting american tourists it's more like a "fucking doing the world a favour" effort... ;)
(Jokes aside, the American tourists I've met have actually been really good folks... Apparently in the USA if you're stupid enough not to appreciate the rest for the world you won't have the means to travel out there. That's certainly better than Denmark!)
