a lot of people walked out... when i went to warehouse i ran into a friend who said she watched 50 walk out only about 5 races in. a lot were also put off by the lack of classic sidecars. i LOVE sidecars, but all these modern ones have got going for them is speed, they all look the same and sound the same. least the classic ones you could tell them apart.
i wouldnt have bothered cept i had friends going... in the end i was in such a foul mood it wasnt worth it anyways. :argh:
on a plus, the viewing for the motards was better... many of the shrubs had been cut back or removed all together, and they also had 2 lots of grand stands as well. whatever they use to make the track is crap! after 2 laps, the corners have gone all boggy and soft, so those that dont drop are lucky. one corner claimed two bikes every single lap it got so bad.
they needed to open the gates more as well... i waited through 3 laps to get across. it needs to be every race, to allow people to move around. the guy manning my gate was copping a bit of bullying from spectators.

I had a wonderful day at the bikes today, arrived at 10 am and left at about 6.30 pm.
EVERYONE is entitled to there own opinion.
As for the gates opening between every race, dont you think it would be a loooooooong day (approx 10 mins each time) add that up!!!!!!!!!!!
MOTARDS are awesome and the spectators over there watching will agree, pity about your (boggy) corners but rain will do that and noone has control over that aye!!!!
Numbers were up again this year and have been going up every year since the new committee took over(go wmcc)
KEEP A GOOD THING GOING.
A survey was done and i cant wait to see the results, happy new year and stay safe

Had a fantastic day myself.
Caught up with the Ex (of 4 years ago), and had a great chat.... much to the despite of her jealous boy friend :bash:
Anyhow, watched it all from Holden Corner.... Gave up trying to cross the track, and stayed put.
Our hearts sank as one of the Motard Riders binned right in front of us... Brought back some real emotions that one...
How is he, does anybody know? Didn't look good! Hope he is okay.
Spent the rest of the day catching up with mates... who must have wondered what the Ex was doing with me :jerry:
Anyhow, after leaving the circuit, rode my mates little VT home (CBR Still broken).
Once at home I text the Ex to make sure she was okay for a ride home... to Levin.... Had a gut feeling....
Apparently Mr Jealous had left her there
So, back to Wangas in the ute I go....
Took her to Levin to find the idiot had left! :gob: With ALL his stuff!
Oh, well, if he can't hold a conversation about bikes then he is no good for her anyway. She deserves much, much better.
So after an instant coffee.... (Yep, he even too the coffee machine!) , and a chat, I made my way back home.
So, all in all I had a great day! The Ex did too.... and Mr Jealous isn't particularly welcome back! :tugger:
Expected a few questions myself when I walked in.....
All I got was, "Did you have a good day babe? I'm off to bed now, early start".
She is a darling.... and it must suck to work through Christmas.

I was going to go but after a pretty busy xmas day and waking up late I decided I couldnt be arsed riding over there in the wind and rain. The water on the road in the photos looks a bit heavy for the "great weather" comment. I think you been living in palmy for too long. Had a relaxing day with vistors so wasnt a complete loss. Would have been nice to make it over but shit happens.

Mate,
There was a little bit of wind... Well, when on a 250 one really notices it!
But the VT handled it okay.
As for the rain... Not a drop from Marton to Wanganui at 0950 onwards.
so i guess you missed out...
Oh, and yeah, the sun burnt my face too.

This must be the season of discontent.
Trashy is upset over officials not following the rulebook.
Shauns pissed becuase a certain unnamed rider failed to follow an agreement.
Quickbuck had a great day because his x split from her boyfriend?
To be honest most people going to these races don't know any of the riders. Granted there are few hardcore fans but most are just there for the spectacle of bikes hooning around the street.
This year as a spectator I found it to be quite good. There was good class seperation with no Motards in F3. Also I noticed that not very race seemed like the same bikes out (Due to the combining of F2 and F1). The crowds wheren't as big so moving around wasn't as bigger hassle as other years.
What I didn't enjoy was the fact that there didn't seem to be must competitive racing going on in the classes I pay most attention to.
Craig Shirriffs just cleared out in Formula Wanganui.
Glen Williams did the same in F3 when Terry Fitzgerald had a problem before the first race. So the battles that would have made the meeting memorable never happend.
Peter Tanner cleared out in Bears.
Bringing classic bikes to the racing has its problems as they do dump oil on the track more often than not at these meetings. Can't please all the people all the time.
Lets hope that next year there are more overseas riders. I'm picking Brian Bernards riders had an enjoyable day and hopefully will spread the word and also come back next year.
BTW I arrived just after the first race and the weather conditions couldn't have been much better all day. Just a bit of wind. Maybee if it had been wet the racing would have been alot closer and spectacular.

I guess this is the thread to add my story and photos of the day to.
This year I got to the circuit about 10.30 and practice was still under way. Then they had the ride by of competitors which caught me by surprise a bit because Motormouth didn't really announce it too well, or so it seemed to me and I didn't have my camera at the ready being a bit busy eating a hotdog at the time. So I missed Miss Universe Wanganui going around on the first lap and buggered if I could get a good photo of Trevor Discombe going by.
Here's what I did get for you. There's Sparky going by in the second pic.
merv
27th December 2007, 15:09
The ride by continued - and I did catch a photo of the chick on the second lap.
Did the rest of you notice the absolute lack of umbrella girls and other such attractions this year?
Jimmy caught me by surprise on the ride by so sorry mate I couldn't zoom my camera out quick enough to get you in the frame but this shot showed the determination in your face huh!
merv
27th December 2007, 15:18
Cool seeing the guys with their helmets off eh!
I'm not a professional photographer and I'm using my simple Olympus camera so hey, you can have these pics for free.
Then the racing got underway on time at 11.00. There were some codgy old guys racing as well as some younger guys.
Motu you'd have loved to see Paul Dobbs #198 on the Norton Commando racing.
merv
27th December 2007, 15:24
In the first Formula Wanganui race I got a rare shot of Stroud leading Shirrifs, but it wasn't to last very long. Craig you made that bike hum. A great effort for sure.
Jimmy you were looking pretty good man and so was Sparky though he was a bit further back in the field but improving on his lap times I'm sure.
Then out came the 'tards and that guy Toby Summers #777 is quick on his Yamaha.

They had (and do have) bridges at other race events, which are usually export containers. I'm surprised this hasn't been the case at Wangavegas...? Would made the whole crossing thing easier...
merv
27th December 2007, 15:33
A few more 'tard pics then Brian Bernard did a lap with a chick on the back popping wheelies on the back straight. Missed that with my camera except got him with just a wee bit of air, but then saw him kinda fluff it and damn near end up in the gutter and drop it down with a nasty scrape.
Then out came the sidecars. Paul in NZ probably knows the guys on #242 with Guzzi power. #46 towards the back of the grid is a friend of mine dating back to my school days and he was competing for the first time in a long time.

Here's some more pics, continuing with sidecars and then the big boys came out again (to take their hard earned places on the grid eh Jimmy - not ).

27th December 2007, 15:48
This part of the racing was pretty good all the same, but I did think the 'tards were overdone and not really the best attraction for that circuit (and I'm saying that as a dirt bike enthusiast) so it was good to see the real race bikes out on track.
KBer's #17 and #20 rode in close formation for much of the race.
It may have been a smaller crowd than the last couple of years - well nothing was going to match the anniversary year - but you can see from these pics on the front straight a pretty packed crowd that had Motormouth asking them to step back from the fence instead of pressuring it.
merv
27th December 2007, 15:54
Another lap and #17 and #20 are still at it.
There's Sean Donnelly #3 on his Z1 going bloody well for a supposedly only 107hp machine if you believe his story in BRM. In the fourth pic he's about to lap Shirrifs - oh  or is that the other way round?
Last pic sees Jimmy finishing the race - well done that man .
merv
27th December 2007, 16:01
Off goes Formula 3 again.
Codgy #17 was pretty quick again and so was the Norton.
Terry Fitz #2 was out racing this time going well as usual.
Then it was Formula Wanganui and the big boys again.
merv
27th December 2007, 16:08
That fellah on #56 was a bit quick - good on ya Craig - but Jimmy on #20 was looking good.
Then I finally went and had a squiz around the pits. As I said on another thread we did that while a couple of the 'tard races were on while we waited for the real bikes to come out again.
There's a pic of Stroudy and also one of Craig doing a TV interview. Jimmy if what I heard him say to the interviewer about how much horsepower that bike has is true no wonder everyone else has problems.
merv
27th December 2007, 16:16
Paul in NZ there's that sidecar with a motor with cylinders at a funny angle and no fairing cover anyway and there's another sidecar with its cover off.
Then it was back to watch the racing and damn the 'tards were still going. Then out came the sidecars again.
merv
27th December 2007, 16:21
More pics of the sidecars before the fast boys came out again.
There's Jimmy in the 5th pic peeling 4th in line onto the rail overbridge and going hard towards that corner in the 6th pic.
merv
27th December 2007, 16:27
Hope I wasn't the only one taking pics of ya Jimmy but here's another couple of you with Stroud in between.
Then a pic of Craig #56 going past Her_B4's fellah isn't it on #33.
For a light interlude in memory of Robert Holden the Aluminium and Plastic Fantastics did a few laps
merv
27th December 2007, 16:33
A few more pics of the Fantastics and the next pics I got were of the fast boys again in the last leg of the Robert Holden Memorial.
There's Jay on #37 with #M Matt Sadowski on his tail and #G is the Aussie Gareth Jones.
merv
27th December 2007, 16:42
Here's some more pics of Jay and he was doing the meanest knee slides onto the bridge generating sparks - no-one else was doing that from what I saw.
That's Shirrifs in pic 3 and Nick O in pic 4 and Jay again in pic 5.
Obviously the organisers think the 'tards are the bees knees because they were last race of the day. I took one last pic, this time of Josh McFarlane the Aussie who took out the feature because Toby Summers overshot a corner, before I left the circuit to go and have dinner with friends in Wanganui.
Sadly no pics of the umbrella girls to show you.
I finally got home about 10.15pm and would say I had a pretty good day, but like many are saying the flavour was just not quite spicy enough this year. OK the weather wasn't perfect, but I've been to wet days there before that were memorable events.
Happy New Year to you all.

Cheers guys - I've always enjoyed having my pics - this year I didn't take so many mainly because the light wasn't so good and the format of the racing wasn't as great. I date back to the Marlboro years and earlier so did find this year a bit unexciting.
The days of Allan Collison on a Mach IV versus Keith Turner on the Benelli 650, and Trevor Discombe vs Dale Wylie in '74 are the kind of days I remember well, along with Croz on the Z1R in '77. The 'tards just don't have that sort of emotion associated with them, they belong in their own series.
Here's some of my old pics from '74 taken on my fancy Kodak Instamatic can't adjust anything camera. Note the total lack of fencing - no crowd restraints needed - God we had fun back then.

Liked the comment about the old marlboro series, was damn good series with Cros and Freeth, then a couple of newby's named Holden,Hiscock and Rankin.Good days to be had, especially when you had a few beers then drove home(whoops).

I was on the Bunnings side of the front straight and didn't get a good view of it, but I was around by the cemetery sitting under the trees later when Sellar lost his swinger Minnell and the poor bugger flipped over a few times as he skidded down the road and lost a glove in the process. Not sure how he fared either but he got up OK and walked off the track but later they took him away in the ambulance no doubt as the shock set in. What I didn't see is what happened to Sellar once he'd gone around the corner and over the bridge. The yellow flags came out so did he flip the sidecar without his swinger on it?

Nah, he made it through a corner or two and realised on the start line straight and pulled over (I saw that part). My mate was further back on the track and grabbed the swinger from through the fence cause he reckoned he was about to walk back on to the track into the rest of the oncoming sidecarts!! Yeah he did eh, but it was a bit hard to enjoy it fully, as he was in the paper before saying he didn't like the circuit and didn't want to race but had to, and was only there because Paeroa was not part of the trophy race and he wanted that trophy.

Craig Shirriffs just cleared out in Formula Wanganui.
Though it was fantastic, in a masochistic spectator type way, when he fucked up somewhere and came past us just before the Ss in fourth and well back instead of 1st, and then to watch him fly through there so much faster than the others as he rapidly regained his position out the front!
But by far the best spectatoring was inside turn 1 for the sidecars. First up we saw the crash and some of the aftermath until an ambulance had the nerve to block our view of the fisticuffs!
But the Guzzi coming through that corner crossed up and hard on the gas was fantastic, and those around me mentioned missing the old Triumph sidecar...... which was heard throughout the day ..... think Wanganui has lost a crowd favourite there

I've spent a little time comparing the results from the last 2 years ( laptimes on mylaps) and some of the comparisions are quite interesting.
The track was a little slower this year probably to it not getting as much heat into it due to the wet spells.
Codgys old bike from last year went around the track faster than his new silver bullet this year .
Terry Fitzgerald did a faster lap this year than last year.
Last year the outright lap record got broken with several riders going under the 50 second barrier this year no one broke 50sec. (Correction Craig Shirrifffffs went under in two seperate races)
So heres a question for you experts whats quicker around Wangas a 600 a 750 or a 1000? Its the old power VS handling debate again sorry

Answer my own question.
The 1000 has 1 year on suspension tech on it, better tyres and the tracks slower right?

I dunno Gary...compare lap time parity at nats between superbikes and supersport last season...would be best comparision you would have...

Just talking Wanganui here Ryan. Maybe the track was ok and the riders were all slower.

Or they were actually racing, and not going out to break lap records?
Don't know, didn't see last year, but there might be something in the fact there were lots of battles going on.
At the end of the day the magic #56 came fling from 4th after an err, to 1st. So that little fact in itself proves... well, Craig is a crack hot rider. Shame Hayden Fitzgerald couldn't do the same on the CBR ;)

Pity it didn't rain like the forecast. It would have been a Westsport.
Harden up. Not doing the last race was pretty dissapointing for Redpath. They might have missed a bit of TV coverage.

Fantastic images Merv, thankyou so much.
It's reminded me of what a spectacular day I had, the most intense racing I've had the pleasure of experiencing. Just look at the size of those eyes! I didn't blink once in any race.
I.me sure you blinked when i gave you a wave Jimmy.............

So how come neither you nor Jimmy were out in that last race? Had you given up in disgust and it was just better to get to a few beers?

Just looking back here, so is the 49.061 Stroud did last year on the thou the lap record?
Does anyone remember what lap time Richard Scott did on the NS500 when he was said to have broken the record many years back which then stood for some time?

we had a great day, finishing well up the order and even managed to bag 4th in the feature race, (2nd in F1 class, according to mylaps.com).
not too shabby on a zx10r well down on power. pretty good effort for a "small bloke can't ride big bikes!"
well done to Derek.

yeah, we got shuffled back in the starting line-up a few times but Derek just laughed it off and said it would give him a couple of other guys to chase. to his credit, he managed to finish in front of the factory guys more than a couple of times.

Then out came the 'tards and that guy Toby Summers #777 is quick on his Yamaha.
I think he's the same guy that hurls it around Mt Wellington kart track. "Spectacular" is not a strong enough word to describe his riding.
