I've got a shineray 150 and the suspension is just terrible on real trails.
What would be the first step to improve the ride?

I'm sure Ohlins will make something for it, chinese ohlins that is probably be spelt Olrans though.

Don't want to be rude, but those Chinese bikes are not up to it really. Easier to sell and buy something made elsewhere.....

You arent being rude. Frosty said that it felt like the damping was no existant in the front and that the fork springs were about ten weights too light.

sell it...get a decent bike...and I'm not trying to be a arse..those bikes are cheap for a reason..they look like proper MX bikes..but they are not..I've seen one with a bent frame from jumping [I'm not talking about lil jumps here..these are very talnented dudes...doing very big jumps]...amongst the other things that were killed on it.

I must agree with the others here. It would be an easier proposition to put your hard earned dollars towards something that was designed to be trail ridden IMO.

I have to agree with cowpoos. A mate at work bought the XR250 copy and it's been nothing but trouble. The rear brake caliper fell off when its retaining pin broke, the rear axle has a visible bend in it, the rear shock has NO damping and the spring would be OK for a pit bike, but off road may as well not be there. I think they need to be banned. They aren't fit for the purpose they are sold for.

This doesn't help for next week. Can't frosty just put better springs and oil in the front forks?

jorja, seriously, the chinese bikes are not up to it, you will destroy it.

if yours is like our shineray gy4 200cc trail bike - good luck - it is the most harshly suspended buck board I've ever thrown a leg over.

It would be so easy to spend more than the bike is worth trying to make the suspension work.

We geared ours right down so we could have fun going slow (up hills and through bogs etc) as there is only pain to be had from going fast.

i used to hav a chinese bike similar to that, and the rear shock was rooted, when i started doing jumps the bike would keep bouncing up and down after i had landed! also every time i dropped the bike, the plastics would snap in about 5 places! haha

then i got my KX125, its a completely different bike! i would recommend just giving up with the shineray and going japanese.. if u can afford it that is.

What would be the first step to improve the ride? honestly the best thing to do, is sell your bike and look around for a second hand DRZ or KLX 125. The price second hand would be close to what you payed for your bike, if you brought it new,
Honda has a 150 even second hand they are not cheap, and Kawasaki has a new KLX140 not sure on price.

cheers John

get frosty to have another look, and see what he reckons. New
'""quailty oils""" and the bike sprung to your weight.
and hours of fun will be had.

I had a mate with one (the 200) and in all honesty after his second trailride he was about to give up the sport all together...I gave him a ride on my KDX and he said..."I aint rideing that Shineray again!!...) he now has a YZ250F and is havin a blast...

Ufnortunately I had the job of riding it while he was on mine and my god the suspension nearly killed me..no joke it was that bad...

I've seen a couple of the new KLX 140 around the trails and they look and ride great. Retail price I believe is easily under the 5k mark. From the feedback riders are saying its a good step up from the PW80 size and very good for the smaller lady rider.

Grap one from a dealer Jorja and take it for a test.

Jorja- a lot of good sense has been spoken in this thread. But I do understand your predicament. you will improve the fornt end for about $10-12 by draining the oil and replacing it with 10 w fork oil. also put in 10% extra. If you weigh more than 70kg you could also put in 20-25mm spacers made from thick wall tubing like water pipe. These will preload the srings and stiffen it a little. some folks on here will throw up their hands in horror. But remember- its just a Shineray 150 and jorja's got 5 kids to feed.
As for the rear shock- the rear shocks on my 5 Chinese bikes (cavallos) are a bit suss with adults on them and I have been looking for a mid range replacement shock but with no luck yet. the ones on my bikes appear rebuildable. when one gets bad, I will try refilling it with heavier oil and will let you know the result.
Good luck with it and any other dramas PM me, I can get bits at very cheep prices- Stu

Thank you Cave weta. Frosty told me he's spoken to RT?? whoever RT is and hes got a fair few ideas to improve things heaps.
Frosty seems to think that the forks may have very little oil in them at all.
Springs wise he's talking about emu thingees
He was muttering about heavier and longer springs from a honda bucket contraption he has behind the shed.
At the point he was measuring up my suzuki forks I decided I can live with the shineray as is thank you very much

Different bike or different attitude?
Frosty made some adjustments to the bike for me. It just isn't behaving the same way as it did. It still clunks a couple of times but nowhere as bad.
Now its FUN to ride. When Frosty hasn't ridden it and bent the gearlever back up and under the footpeg that is
