I love having a pack rack, saves having a pack on my back when going on a trip :2thumbsup
When not using it, you would hardly know the bike was fitted with one :p

Do you know (I just found out today ...) that you can get racks for a Ducati???
And I thought WHAT?????? you GOTTA be bloody joshing me, why the hell would any sane person put a pack rack on a Ducati?! :brick:
And then I thought of all the gear (including bedding and xmas presents) that I am supposed to be taking on the bike over the 'ditch' at xmas and wonder how the hell am I going to do that without a rack????? :argh:
Are they removable? I mean can you fit them for a specific trip and then take 'em off when until you need them again????

i use my rack all the time - spare helmet, wet weathers, pilot gear, work gear. much rather on there than in a bag on my back

I kind of have to agree with you on than Johnboy.... especially on a Duc!!
Sorry HerB4, I know there are practical issues that you are facing, but the poetry of a Duc coming past you is slighly lost if its got a pack attacted... but hey, whatever works for you at the time! right? :2thumbsup

Form follows function
Thats probably because they're less hung up on asthetics and more interested in the practicality of carting their gear around

Hmmm, I'd rather have a pack rack (oopppps I do) than a goldwing.
I know of a few 748/916 riders that have pack racks. On those sorts of bikes if you want to carry gear your choices are limited.

The best part is: the owner/rider is on front of the pack and can't see them -
- unlike a lot of others who can see them and SEEM to be dictating to the sportsbike owners what they can/cannot do with their bikes! :angry2:

how is fitting a pack rack to a sportsbike like fitting a towbar to a ferrari? a ferrari has room for a passenger and bags. and how else do you get the jet ski down to the boat ramp? there's a 911 turbo with a towbar in cambridge that does just that....

This is the choice I was faced with, I'm going to Napier in a couple of weeks for 5 days.
I could either:
1. Take the car up and have ample space for luggage
or
2. Fit a pack rack to the bike so I can carry enough gear for the length of the holiday.
Now, why on earth would I want to take the car! The reality is that most of the time the pack rack will be in the garage but it will let me take the bike instead of the car when I need to carry a bit of extra luggage.
I guess it's just as well that I'm not into motorcycling to impress other people, otherwise putting a packrack on a sports bike would be a big no no!:2guns:

... and its not that long ago we were reading a thread about how paint was worn off a bike by throwovers. Give me a packrack any day and protect the paint. Buy the Ventura type and you can take the rack off when you aren't using it and replace it with a grabrail if you want it to look better.
Me, well the VFR is a sports tourer not a sports bike I guess, but I fitted that with a full packrack way back after doing one of the rides with Richard Scoular back in the old days of e-riders. Re-cycled was there on the (now Motu's) XLV, Kerry McDonald back when he had a GSXR1100 and others. We did a round the mountain run from Welly. For me, met them at Paremata Shell and we went Wanganui, Paraparas, Top O' The Bruce for lunch, Waiouru, Vinegar Hill, Cheltenham, Ashhurst, Saddle Road, Woodville, Wairarapa, 'tukas, and home again and I clocked up about 850km that day.
The bugger was though, stop for a break, take photos, I'm busy tucking my camera away and the other buggers are disappearing into the distance. Solution, packrack and zip up bag and I can now chuck my camera in the bag quick smart and go too. What would the rides be without the pics eh?
I wouldn't go without the bag on the back now and the Ventura style is tucked behind you, you'd never know it was there really. Want more luggage space, zip on the second bag all without marking your paint. Beautiful!!
Were you somehow thinking a pack rack would slow you down besides you thinking it just looks stupid? The first doesn't happen at all and the second I aint worried about.

And here was I thinking you'd all bought sportsbikes in the knowledge that they arent supposed to carry anything, and that you were all prepared to live with it. Maybe the reality that they are useless except for day trips has hit and you are all having to defend putting something butt-ugly on your bikes to make them worth buying...

No, I brought it with the intention of adding luggage to it when I needed it.
Why does it matter so much? Why do you care what others do to their bike? How can you not understand that it's better to add luggage to a bike and be able to take it away for an extended period of time than to leave it sitting in the garage. Are you stupid?:stupid:

BMW's are prosaically designed to be integrative with luggage ie panniers/tankbags etc. Once you put a rack on a sportsbike it looks weird cos it wasnt designed with that in mind.

If the money tree out the back would produce a decent yeild then maybe I could get a second bike to using when I'm going away for more than a night. As the tree is looking rather sick at the moment I decided to go with a bike that would suit the kind of riding I normally do (commuting & day trips).

They're bloody useful when I'm not using the station wagon for whatever reason (like Easter's bike trip to Wellington). you don't even really notice it when its dismantled (see attached), much the same as you have a 'race pod' when you're not in the business of ferrying pillions. That can be changed for a cushy back seat also.
The pic with the rack is missing the big bag-o-stuff I had as well. Much better than trying to ride with an oversize backpack and other necessities floating around yourbadself. Note faux pas #2 = a sporty with a tank bag. Worth every dollar to me.

I'm having a packrack saga this week.
When I bought the LuxoSport, it was supposed to have a packrack fitted before I picked it up, and I was going to pay half the retail price - i.e., $100. I got there - no rack. :spudwhat:
"It's on order - it'll be here in a coupla days."
Fair enough. Got a workmate to take my backpack (no straps) home on Monday, then found a pack in the cupboard to carry my crap in.
Rang this morning: "Sorry - none in stock at the wholesalers; it'll be two weeks."
WTF?!? I'm getting sick of using a backpack - it's a real bugger getting it on and off over my jacket, as the armour snags the straps, and it's been warm and sunny this week (WTF's up with the D'Auckland weather?), so the pack is a pain.
Rang Kerry at Motohaus (Top Bloke, is Kerry :niceone: ) and he phoned back to say he'd have one this afternoon. :2thumbsup:
Phoned the bike shop, told them what's what, and I wasn't happy with their reaction at all. After some negotiation, they agreed to give me a credit note for $100 to spend in their parts department.
Caught up with a local VFR800 owner this morning, to tell him about my new toy. Turned out he hadn't had his immaculate Anniversary Edition VFR for about a year. Here's his story:
" I killed the VFR almost a year ago when luggage came off the rack and into the back wheel (at an estimated 120km by the police - I have no recall) and I am now almost recovered. I am still advised not to ride even my pedal bike as I still have a broken collar bone that may yet take a further month or two to fix before I should think of riding again." :eek5:
So be very careful to secure that luggage, Kiddies.

NC30_chick & others that think a pack rack on a sports bike sucks......when you finally decide to get your bike out on a rainy day, or go on a decent ride to a decent rally (Cold Kiwi, Brass Monkey, Sulphur City, Glenorchy & Cold Duck), you may well discover you'll need a pack rack. If you are up to staying overnight, you'll need a tent I imagine, along with a sleeping bag and other necessities to get you by. A pack rack comes in really handy for trips like these!.
On the other hand, if you're one of these soft cock fair weather riders that don't do overnight rallys or ride in the rain, well, I suppose you don't need a pack rack I guess!. :moon:

Phoned the bike shop, told them what's what, and I wasn't happy with their reaction at all. After some negotiation, they agreed to give me a credit note for $100 to spend in their parts department.
I probably don't know all the details here, but i seriously would have told them to stick their credit up their tight arses. Refund me ya pricks.
Hate nuthin more than shop owners who roll out the red when they see a prospective buyer, and then fob them when the purchase is done - especally in cases where you were probably being fair and reasonable, and not trying to rip them in any way. :angry2:
Glad my local shop is the shit :yeah:

Profit on sale of my FahrtSturm, unless they end up selling it at trade-in price.
Profit on the VFR800.
Profit on registering the VFR for 6 months, whereas the VTR has nearly a year. (I guess they'll cancel the rego, to get the refund?)
I dunno what the mark-up is on parts etc., but I'd guess at least 100%, so my credit won't cost them much.
Wonder how much servicing, accessories and parts obtained elsewhere will cost them? <_<

I don't wear a backpack for three reasons.
1. Gets in the way of the pillion, I normally ride with my wife on the back.
2. Gives me sore shoulders
3. When I come off, I'd hate to think about the added physics of wearing a backpack, it may provide more protection but would most probably cause more injury.

Have to agree with Festus those softcock sportbike riders who cant last more than a day on their sportsbikes dont need packracks they are just posers out on a day ride. sort of like Hog Club members they bitch about. Real men travel great distances all over the two Islands during inclement weather conditions. They have the stamina to last the distance, so make the necesary adjustments to their machines to enable them to last the distance. If it makes it easier and is more functional try it.See what you started now NC30 CHICK it aint a cat walk out there. Especially if you go away for more than the weekend.

That's not nice, I have riden both islands, and only once did I use a pack rack, carried a tent tied to my back, back pack tied to the seat and tank bag when I road a week in NOrthland country. on the bike all day just going from one side of the coast to the next, and that was on a ZXR250. went from Auck to Well on my Gixxer with a tank bag and back pack, then caught the ferry to the south when I visted my sister in Franz.
Planning a trip from VIC to Dubbo(Picking up my mate and his R1), then riding together to Sydney, then back to VIC after X-mas on my TL, I will only have my Tank bag and Back Pack, all this on a sports bike.

Maybe this problem is unusual, but if I ride with a pack on my back my arms go dead (unless it's light). Once I was slowing down to ride through Murchison so I sat up- both arms dropped to my sides, limp and lifeless. It was a huge effort to get just one arm up onto the bars again. That was fuggen scary- I could just imagine the bike slowing down and then falling over with me powerless to do anything about it because my bloody arms wouldn't work. Seems bloody funny now though.
Also if you happen to fall off wearing a pack with solid stuff in it, your back is not going to appreciate it.

The original argument was that pack racks on sports bikes look stupid. By that logic, luggage strapped to a sports bike, rack or no rack, would look stupid.

This thread should have been more about luggage in general.
Don't worry - it will soon metamorphose (once it reaches maturity) into a beer thread.:yeah:
But while it's still about packracks, I just returned from having mine fitted by Kerry at Motohaus. I can't recommend this guy enough. :first:
The fitting wasn't too bad, as the Ventura racks are well designed and made, but in my case it was complicated by the Howlingtune being mounted higher than the original muffler, leaving almost no clearance between the pipe and the rack. :shit:
Not to worry - Kerry soon sorted it. :2thumbsup
Now I just have to move the muffler down a smidgeon, and wait for the proper rack to be sent so I can swap 'em over (the distributor's fault, not Kerry's). The annoying thing is I had one of the right kind when I trashed my VFR750, and the guy who bought the bag didn't even want the rack, so for all I know he may have thrown it away. :confused2

I've tried the backpack, too hard on the body when your in the saddle for 8 hours solid......
Take a look at the waikato ride video if you have the time/inclination - not packrack in sight, and three people's luggage on the bike... It even looks like it was supposed to be carrying all that stuff - the integrated package....

Your mistaken, But then again I haven't ever bitten at anyones comments on here, so it's not like you'd know anyway.
You remind me of one of the muppets. You know? One of the old men that sat up in the box seats, shouting abuse from a distance. Can be funny at times, but overall quiet annoying. And I'm sure that you have some dudes hand shoved up your rectum too, and just full of fibers.
You have been tring to rark me up for I don't know how many posts, "trying" to piss me of, but frankly my dear, I don't give a dam. Cause you'll always be a bitch to me Bonez, In a big frilly dress.

This thread should have been more about luggage in general.
The original argument was that pack racks on sports bikes look stupid. By that logic, luggage strapped to a sports bike, rack or no rack, would look stupid.
Yes, but it's not about luggage, it IS about pack racks.
And my post was about the ability to ride more then one 1 day on a sports bike without a pack rack or riding a cafe decorating HD. not about how cool it looks. So, not too sure if you are a secret HD rider in disguise, but if you want to look cool slingshot maybe you should trade in your CBR for TLR :Punk:

Pack racks on sports bikes!!!!. Practicality wise they are great, don't feel them there, don't restrict bike in any way. Heaps safer than having backpack on!!!! Some do look bad - (stupid) but in all honesty - what are you doing perving at gear on back!!! Bike and rider are normally the only bits to look at....

this makes u look like one of those queen st, homeless, retarded, bogans.
And the good thing about those ventura racks is a) u can take it off :kick: b) it does 200+ clicks no worries  and c) it catches the pillion when they fall off while doing monos

Yes... specially when I am planning on taking my laundry on tour around the South Island.... but it does make the rear end a lot heavier.
Anyone know why they in the manual Givi advised that I should not exceed 120km/h with the boxes fitted?

Stability I guess, but they go 160-180 ok , attached to your fav m/c of course. If you don't intend to carry a pillion try a bring the bags as far fwd and as low as possible. Easy with universal mounting brackets, not so easy with brackets for made for your specific model. I found having a tank bag, with heavish items in, to bring weight fwd help a lot in the handling side when loaded up. Done around 100,000 kms with the setup on my Integra, have a top box too, with no major issues.

ermm tkns :) I have done bursts of 160 / 170kmh with them fitted as panniers on my private road  In your option would you rather have 1 of those Givi boxes fitted as topbox and have a good size tank bag? or have 2 of those Givi boxes as panniers and have no tank bag? E.g for handling and etc... "maybe I can use my dammed Motomail seat bag as well... "
One thing that I do notice is that with 2 boxes fitted as panniers bike seems to be slower.... perhaps aerodynamic drag? :eek5:

extra drag. The seatbag puts weight to the rear though but further fwd than a topbox (having the weight fwd of the rear axle is a good idea if you can), lightening the front end therefore affecting handling. The seat bag can have light bulky kit in it such as sleeping bags, as an option if you decide to carry more gear if needed. 2 Givis and tankbag would be my personnal choice. Oh the choices hah? HTH. Oh almost forgot- keep an eye on the panniers when loaded to ensure they don't drop down onto the exhaust. We don't want the silk undies getting charred do we ;)

I also note that GIVI advise a 10kg maximum per bag. I noticed that my GS1200SS did suffer a reduction in stability when I tried overloading the rear end. One overweight rider, one very slim wife, fully loaded panniers, 15kg strapped to the top plate, a full tank of gas and the total weight of the bike was 445kg. No wonder the Akaroa hill felt a bit different.

yea good point. For me would be a 80~85kg rider inc gear + pannier @ 3Kg each (6kg total) + things in them 20Kg = around 115Kg + Gas (17Kg) = 132Kg + 190Kg (Bike) = 322Kg ermm I am getting up there as well. Specially with 1/2 your engine size

Off the topic of sports bikes but hey what the heck, Ventura are at last doing pack racks for my WR250F now and I fitted it yesterday and then hung the bag off my VFR on it so it looks like this. You'll recognise the scene as top of Paekak Hill. Spotted Sparky Bills and his mate there.
Also finally fitted one to Mrs Merv's DR650SE too after WT had problems with the courier losing the first set of L brackets.
Whatever you guys think about how dorky they are we wouldn't go without them now, and how else would I take so many photos quickly if I can't just whip my camera out of the zip up bag.
Went to the Flying Fish for afternoon tea with my Bro' on his DR350 and me and Mrs Merv on the DR650. No other bikes there, yeah I know Lynda is out of town but where was everyone else?
