View Full Version : Ouch, my bones.

I almost rose the road toll this morning. Please be careful guys, typing one handed is ass.

I was coming home from a very nice ride to Kaiaua, I hit a sharpish left and the back slid out. Had I practiced my cornering more I'm confident I would be fine, but .. I didn't.

It's true the back slid out, and was no fault of mine, but everything else was my own fault. This was my first serious crash.

After the slide the tyre caught grip on an angle and bucked it up straight, I couldn't control the tank slapping and it veered onto the on coming lane, somewhere I didn't want to be. I purposely fixated on the ditch and shrubs and my bike followed. Next thing I know I have been high sided and doing some impressive flips and come to a stop about 5m away from my bike, which is pretty clear is a write off.

I got off lucky with a broken collar bone, munted shoulders, bruised ribs and various bruises/scrapes (thank god for ATTGAT).

If I had just taken my time, learnt the basics more often, I would have been fine, I am sure of it. I am glad to be alive, so I can do it again, the right way. It really wasn't looking good at moment of impact.

Please don't forget the basics guys, and please be careful. Most importantly have a good new year!

Shit mate,
Sorry to hear of your bin.

Glad you are still with us though.
Heal up fast. Lots of calcium in several different forms for you!

Good point you made.
Lesson to all:
Learn the basics. If you keep making the same mistake, then get a mentor to work out what you are doing wrong in the first place... it may be different to what you think.

27th December 2007, 22:02
ouch!!! Sorry to hear that, it must have been a nerve racking few momments. Great that your sitting up with at least one hand working, the worst didn't happen.
Your right in that it is so important to practice manoeuvres and stopping ect. You can only but learn from this and come off a more careful rider.

Ahh matey, to think I was expecting you to text me with the usual "fancy a ride today?" and when I didn't I had a few others on a little pootle (PrincessBandit, Sprag and also Donor for a brief while). I didn't realise when I was doing the invite that you were laid up in A&E

Donor rode over first to my place and he just casually mentioned off-hand he had spoken to you ... and then when I realised he wasn't joking I was like :gob:

Blimey mate, you've had your fair share of interesting moments with bikes lately! Cut out this fun stuff and just leave the usual shite talking bollocks for me! (I know Sprag at the moment is feeling a little sheepish for the last comments he left you with regarding receding views of an ambulance! :innocent: :o)

Good to hear you're back on the mend and apparently you do have a real flesh and blood girlfriend (Donor said so!)

I guess you'll being playing Tourist Trophy a bit more often now huh?

Thanks guys, howdamnhard: I went back to look at the road and saw a lovely patch of gravel, I think just keeping you cool with your head up would increase your chances.. a little too late for me!

Yeah gijoe, I thought mt bike probs ended at mechanical.. apparently not!

I have insurance, thankfully. Thanks for the well wishes guys.

Hey man, that sucks big time, right at the wrong end of the year as well. Its happened to me awhile ago as well, hit a gravel patch on Scenic drive next thing I know I was sitting in a ditch saying fuck. Sound like yours was a fair bit worse than mine, heal up quick and try not to laugh, broken collar bones and ribs hurt when you laugh...

arghh crap.... I know how the road feels.... now you do too :D err, I mean :( poor bugger, we still haven't ride together yet, I crash, U crash, No1 seems to be able to even get on a bike when I ride!

Oh wellz, Maybe you should lend me your video camera for the next 3 months so you can see the road through my eyes while you're unable to? ;p

Make sure you do your physio exercises when the time comes... They definitely help...

That crap aside, Hope you have a good recovery and don't worry about any thoughts of quitting because as soon as you see your bike or a bike in your driveway, crippled or not you'll try and jump on (atleast I did) hehe

MSTRS
28th December 2007, 08:03
.... what is the recovery method from a high side?

If one happens, chances are the recovery method will start with a trip to hospital.
Slides can be controlled (play on a dirt bike to learn that skill). Tankslappers can be ridden out, usually by getting your weight back and open the throttle.
Highsides are usually quick and final.

Not good to hear about your off and injuries but real good that you are still here, didn't hit an oncoming car or pole. Could have gone real nasty.

These things happen unfortunately and there's not a lot you can do about it.
Just get back on the horse as soon as you are healed up.

I had just gotten a new dririder racer-x jacket as an xmas present to myself, it took the majority of impact and is 100% in tact, I am quite amazed. I will vouch for those jackets!!

The rest didn't get much action, left hand ixon glove got some scrapes but still great.

For some strange reason I went out on my old HJC helmet and not my super expensive Arai one. When I flipped I hit my head first and all of the scrapping is on the top/back of the helmet. It now serves as a reminder ornament :P I had no concussion or head injuries so HJC are good too! ($200-ish helmet).

I've still got my painting hand so I'll be alright for a little while at least, how is your collarbone doing? Any idea how long it took you to start typing with two hands? hehe, my job is fairly typing intensive.

Also, the wonders of fascinations with video logging my rides is the bonus of almost always having a camera on me. What did I do when adrenalin was pumping throughout? Well, when I couldn't pick up the bike, I picked up my camera.

Four weeks. Before then I could type but I could feel it wasn't doing the healing any good.
But I have this great voice recognition software called Dragon Naturally Speaking, which meant I could still "type" at 70 words per minute with only one hand.
It's expensive at around $300 for the latest version but well worth it if you have no hands (and you also have a fast computer.)

Ah mate - there but for the grace of God ...........
The picture you paint is one that goes through my mind often.
I'm pretty slow on the bike and the reason for it has nothing to do with my experience or ability. What it comes down to is that, if it all turns to shit as it did for you, I am pretty sure that I WILL DO THE WRONG THING. The books and the physics and even the mathematics say that the throttle is more likely to be your friend than the brake lever. However, it takes huge presence of mind to stamp on your preservation instincts and stay on the gas when it starts sliding all over the road underneath you.
Even worse, my experience says that it's not like you have any time to think about what to do. From the start of the sideways bit to the ditch can be the matter of just a moment. So if you are gonna do the right thing, so far as I can see, it has to be instinctive. You probably won't have time to think about it.
So how do you make it instinctive?
How do you get proficient in dealing with a situation that you spend a lot of time training yourself to avoid?
I don't know for sure and it worries me. It also limits me.
Maybe Mstrs is right and the dirt is the place to learn control once the shit has already hit the fan. This is the road that I am currently on.
If you find another answer, I'd love to hear it.

A dirt bike on a great big flat grassy paddock after rain or wet with dew! Spend a couple of weekends going around and around, and controlling slides will become second nature in no time.

Thanks, you bastard. (Still haven't shaved, I'm liking the 'look there's a bum!' deal going on at the moment.)

Well I'm able to type two-handed now without too much discomfort, which means I'm able to do my job and earn some moneys again. Yay!

Collar bone is healing up nicely I ... think, I go to the bone doc on the 8th so I'll prolly post again once I've got the verdict. I'm really having withdrawls though, my girlfriend is the only thing keeping me sane while awake. While asleep though, that's another matter.

I had a dream last night that a friend bought a motorcycle and needed me to deliver it for him, for some reason I had a 80's 750 zephyr and was using that to go pick up a trail bike, with no brakes. I was riding around the road with no brakes doing super motard slides to slow myself down, it was .... surreal. And here's me being adamant that I would be sensible and buy a car first, bike second.

I don't think so, Tim.

All the other aches and pains have slowly disappeared, so it's just the collar bone and both shoulders, which restrict movement a lot but I'm getting by. No idea what I'm going to do when my gf aka personal nurse leaves on Sunday :(
