Well the Philip Pullman books knock Harry Potter for six in my opinion, for those of you that like HP but are looking for a bit more depth, try the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, the first of which is The Golden Compass.

Looking forward to the movie, I haven't seen it yet so hoping it hasn't mangled the books too much. Will see it this weekend, methinks.

I'm a sucker for fantasy movies but we thought it looked and felt wonderful, kids would love it (we are all kids really). If the next movie had been on there and then we would have paid to see it..

The special effects were top notch!

Great books, really enjoyed them. I do like a bit of steampunk. Nicole Kidman does worry me too, however

Will have to go and see it with the girl.

I thought Nicole was an inspired choice for Mrs Coulter. Beautiful but emotionless, aided by liberal application of botox. She is supposed to have a fairly frozen facade in the book, so it fits.

The book was fantastic.

I thought the movie was poos.

I read the book first.

I thought the book was crap personally.

And I've given up going to SF/F movies, they're invariable so littered with errors they're all but unwatchable.

A sucker for fantasy? then you'd love Beowulf (apart from the fact it's fucking rubbish )

Group of us watched both Beowulf in 3d and the Golden Compass on thursday, and came to the conclusion that Beowulf was better.

The golden compass was insanely fast paced. I felt disappointed that they hadn't made it a four hour long film and kept more of the story.

I watched the movie and thought it was fantastic, I want to see it again actually.

The first book is called The Northern Lights and i'm on the third book already, it is brilliant. The movie does differ from the book slightly but a lot less than most movies do and when you have read/watched both you can see why they have done it.

As described in the book, Nichol Kidman is a fantastic choice for the roll of Mrs Coulture, as is Daniel Craig for Lord Asrael,

Highly recommend both.

Beowulf is great in 3D but Enchanted is a bit weak.

If you are a non-chilled Christian you won't enjoy as very anti-christian which is film makers thrill.

I am gonna wait 6 months for it to be on Sky pay to view as it is cheaper.

Enchanted is fucking crap. *My* excuse is that I have a six year old who wanted to see it. The CG animals were great, but it's a sad day when a virtual chipmunk is the best actor on the screen.

I am keen on the golden compass though. Mostly because of how upset religious groups are over it.

Sounds like I'd love it then!
So it's something that the kids (8 and 10 girls) will enjoy?
Was going to take Nigel, but he didn't seem to excited by it, so might take the girls when I'm back at work.

I personally wouldn't waste my money.

Pullman's antagonism toward religion appears to be focused upon Christianity in particular. He is quoted as saying "I suppose technically, you'd have to put me down as an agnostic. But if there is a God, and he is as the Christians describe him, then he deserves to be put down and rebelled against."

So what is a "non-chilled Christian"? One that has made an commitment to be uncommitted? God is very clear on the matter that it is in fact those that rebel against Him that will be the ones being "put down". I can't say I'd want to live out my short life only to find out I was against God when at that very moment being for Him would have made all the difference.

Free Will is one of the greatest gifts - it means each of us are free to choose to be for or against God. We are not free however from the consequences of that choice.

Free Willy is a whale.

I am for God, however, I just take a more chilled approach to life and don't get too bothered about things like this film. Jesus was the Son of God and he got rapted by others for mixing with non-believers...he showed us his human side and God is an understandingwith ................we only need to have God in our hearts and on our lips.

I have a laugh on this site, watch non-Christian films, mix with non believers, God understands.

A close friend of mine watched the movie. She just read too much into it and came back ranting etc. That's fine, however, at the end of the day it was only a film...........

FFS - there is no anti god message in that movie - its a story... There is a pro freedom of choice message which I believe 'god' is very big on. The church less so..

I constantly wonder at the smallness of people and their desire to ruin the brightness in everything - perhaps evil does live in the hearts of some?

So what is a "non-chilled Christian"?

I guess that'd be you then.

I've always felt that there's not really much point bringing the subject up. Religious sorts always say the same things, and irreligious sorts always say the same things, and they're both talking at complete cross-purposes to each other.

You'll never convince a religious man that his concept of God exists only inside his own mind, and you'll never convince an irreligious man that God exists outside of anyone's mind. There's simply no leverage in either direction, no common ground to argue from, when comparing one such postulate with another.

Anyway, we already have a thread devoted to the subject (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=3026), and it's a generally-accepted polite convention on KB that religious discussion is limited thereto.

I agree it's just a story was just saying what I have heard. The guy who did the film is an open anti Christian.

As mentioned before I agree that God is big on freedom

Hmm. Funnily enough, I saw it this afternoon this my two nephews and my niece (4, 12 and 14, all enjoyed it if this helps).

I absolutely loved the design and art direction- but have to say that having read the book, the scripting was a disappointment. The book is far darker than the film, and a real opportunity was missed in the desire to chase American box office sales. The ending was in the wrong place, too!

Still, for all that it's a beautiful film even though it could have been better and more meaningful.

Now: the religious issue. I am not certain that a criticism of religious Establishment is quite the same as a criticism of religious views per se.
The Inquisition would be a good historical example of the 'Church' engaging in policies not necessarily in line with Christian teaching as we might recognise it.
Were they religious people, or were they simply entering politics through a different and more ornate door?

Right. Was going to write a lot of guff about the 'parallel universe' plot and stuff, but I'm tired and rambling more than usual, so I'll spare you and go to bed.

Um... that is EXACTLY what you are supposed to do. Christ set the example and showed the Jewish religious zealots up as a pack of twats.

Some people have a warped idea of Christianity based on the dribble they hear and see on TV or read in an article. Don't let the nutters spoil it for ya.

oh dear, most people seem to have loved it. We saw it this evening - husband and kids loved it, if it hadn't been for the sound effects I would have fallen asleep about 3 times through it. My favourite game was trying to recognise the voice talents (took me ages to get Ian McKellan [oh dear], didn't recognise Ian McShane's at all, oh oh oh and I did recognise Eva Green who was Vesper Lynd in the last 007 flick). But I'm not a great fan of fantasy movies anyway, so what would I know.:whocares::bleh:
And as for the religious connotations, as a Christian, I don't really know what everyones knickers are in a twist about - a movie is a movie, hardly gospel, and I did enjoy all the Harry Potters despite controversy over them, oh and most of the Star Wars ones too (remember all the hoo haa when they came out? back in the 70's for those of you old enough to remember...)

enchanted is the new disney that starts as animation, right? well, when i saw the preview for that, i was on the edge of my chair, cos i was so excited to see a new classically animated disney movie... none of this computerised shrek stuff. and then it switched the live action. talk about break a girls heart!

i love the classic disney and "flat" animation. the shrek stuff is neat, but gets boring after a while. give me snow white over cgi and live action anyday.

And as for the religious connotations, as a Christian, I don't really know what everyones knickers are in a twist aboutTowards the end of the book there is a section that is.. quite specific.. The movie stayed right out of that. And the bit I am referring to is almost out of character with the rest of that book. I can imagine parents reading the book after their children and getting quite a shock at the content in that section. Those who believe in the bible, and those who do not.

Read the book though; it's good. I must purchase the next two.

Ok so I went to the movies today ...

Enchanted was first up and great ... really magical and good story

Golden compass ... This I really liked ... it was well storylined and good cliffhanger to the next installment ....

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium ... really cute ... makes you wanna believe in magic ...

Oh well back to the real world now.
